Historia
American Exceptionalism and American Innocence examines the stories we’re told that lead us to think that the U.S. is a force for good in the world, regardless of slavery, the genocide of indigenous people, and the more than a century’s worth of imperialist war that the U.S. has wrought on the planet. Roberto Sirvent and Danny Haiphong detail just what Captain America’s shield tells us about the pretensions of U.S. foreign policy, how Angelina Jolie and Bill Gates engage in humanitarian imperialism, and more.

BEFORE I RE-READ AMERICAN HISTORY, I COULD NOT FINISH American Exceptionalism and American Innocence. But once I had…
Revisado: 04-28-25
Every single piece of American Exceptionalism and American Innocence read like the best non-fiction Julius Caesar and the Fall of THE EMPIRE that you could ever want to hear read out loud! One example, all those years of meticulously tracing maps of whatever state or National we were studying and finding pictures of its major exports I can definitely picture all the maps in Daniel Immerwahr’s HowToHideAnEmpire with 4 symbols in 2025..a flag, a military robo-cop, assorted automatic guns and rifles, and (OF COURSE!) surface-to-air ballistic nuclear weapons. No guarantee what your “ride” Will be like, but I highly recommend the journey!

Historia
Myrlie Louise Beasley met Medgar Evers on her first day of college. They fell in love at first sight, married just one year later, and Myrlie left school to focus on their growing family. Medgar became the field secretary for the Mississippi branch of the NAACP, charged with beating back the most intractable and violent resistance to black voting rights in the country. Myrlie served as Medgar’s secretary and confidant, working hand in hand with him as they struggled against public accommodations and school segregation, lynching, violence, and sheer despair within their state’s “black belt.”

Revisado: 07-05-24
Joy-Ann Reid is a master historiographer and storyteller. Of course, with the epic and enduring LOVE story of Medgar and Myrlie Evers and their families of origin and of choice being able to lend their voices and recollections to this effort Ms. Reid was going to be successful in this her third book. I URGE PEOPLE OF ALL AGES TO READ THIS BOOK! In fact, I cannot think of a better way to be encouraged and energized about the future of democracy and a world that works for everyone than to read this uniquely Black American story MULTIPLE TIMES.

Historia
For two centuries, the deep-seated fear that many White people feel—of losing power, of losing economic standing, of losing a particular “way of life”—has been the driving force behind American politics and culture. And as we approach a future where White people will become a racial minority in the US, something estimated to occur as early as 2043, that fear is only intensifying, festering, and becoming more visible. Are we destined for a violent clash? What can we do to step into our country’s inevitable future, without tearing ourselves apart in the process?

Historia
America’s backstory is a whitewashed mythology implanted in our collective memory. It should come as no surprise that the dominant narrative of American history is blighted with errors and oversights—after all, history books were written by white men with their perspectives at the forefront. It could even be said that the devaluation and erasure of the Black experience is as American as apple pie. In Black AF History, Michael Harriot presents a more accurate version of American history.

ONE of the most powerful things about BLACK AF HISTORY IS EVERY.SINGLE.WORD.OF.ITS.NARRATIVE
Revisado: 10-13-23
I Hope everyone gets to read Michael Harriet’s tour de force of a people, a place, and a time. Pick your time-of-primary-interest; past, present and or future; your curiosity will be abundantly satisfied and piqued. For me both occurred simultaneously; this met I had to give the historical narrative my full attention. I found myself needing to make notes and take time after hearing about half of each chapter to think about what I had read. For mein the FALL OF 2023 ,with proxy “HUMPTY-DUMPTYS” falling all day every day( tragic, frustrating, and depressing) BLACK AF HISTORY was a healing balm and motivational therapy for this 64 year-old Black gay male still grappling with the loss/disappearances of one too many elder family members from 2016 to present day. Thank YOU AND Please keep writing and speaking, Mr. HARRIOT!
