Just skip the end

Great stories, mostly. But the end remarks where he mentions a desire for truth in journalism...well, that isn’t Trump’s fault. The journalists themselves turned and altered the narratives, skewed things as they saw. They sold out; Trump never did.

Historia
"The possession of power, no matter how enormous, does not bring the knowledge how to use it." Raphael, a failed writer, deep in debt, and unrequited in love, is about to take a suicidal plunge into the Seine River. Just in time, he discovers the "Magic Skin" in an antiquity shop. Its supernatural powers grant every wish but it extracts a terrible toll! This parable depicts the malaise of 19th century France.

Could have been a short story
Revisado: 04-02-21
I didn’t hate the narrator as much as everyone else seems to. The chapter breaks were a nightmare that often split mid-word and I’m not sure how that even happens!
The entire thing was so prolonged and for no reason. The only decent lines in it worth the philosophical discussion are the ones used in the book description, so you could save a lot of time by just reading that.

How America Lost Faith in Expertise

Historia
We are moving beyond a natural skepticism regarding expert claims to the death of the ideal of expertise itself. This is a bad thing. If trust in experts dissipates, expertise will serve not the public interest, but the interest of whatever clique is paying its bills. And such an outcome is already perilously near.

I believe this should be a required listen for every adult in America, maybe a re-listen on an annual basis.

Too fast

It moved way too fast to follow. As a teaser interview to promote a book, it certainly made me want to buy a copy. But as a quick listen to gain real information from, not so much. They seemed like they were in a race to fit as many words in as possible and not really dive in enough to give solid, actionable info.

If I could have returned it, I would have, and I’m the type to always finish a book. This was awful. Literally could not care whether anyone lived or died, dated or stayed married, any bit of it. Even the way their feelings were written were so dull and emotionless, though at times I wondered if that was made worse by the terrible performance. Only character I liked was the husband who showed up a few seconds before the end and in the epilogue. Most important note: No one could be that dumb in the outdoors. It could more easily have passed for a comedy, if there were anything worth laughing at. And what is with the title? Please someone tell me what that has to do with the story. Sounds uplifting and this book falls somewhere between dead boring and dreadful.

Historia
Julianne Westcott was living the kind of life that other Protestant girls in prewar Liverpool could only dream about: old money, silk ball gowns, and prominent young men lining up to escort her. But when she learns of a blind-and-deaf brother, institutionalized since birth, the illusion of her perfect life and family shatters around her.

Transports the reader
Revisado: 02-18-20
This story was a rare, totally immersive experience. It didn’t simply stir scenes in my own life to make me feel for the characters. I lived every moment of this story as Julianne Wescott. I wept for Julianne as I’ve never wept for my personal life and longed for her happiness more than I have my own. It made me believe in love again.
