Historia
Gregory Roarke—former bounty hunter, former Trailblazer, current agent for the ultra-secret Icarus Group—has received a new assignment: locate a suspected but as-yet undiscovered teleportation portal on the backwater colony world of Alainn. The rival Patth are also searching for the device, and have considerably more resources at their disposal. Fortunately, Roarke has Selene and her incredibly sensitive Kadolian sense of smell. On paper, it should be a straightforward enough job. But that was before there was a murder in the small town of Bilswift . . . and another one . . .

the series is going more in a new direction, per Zahn's usual buildups. sorta reminds me of the rail series, this book is a good listen and sets up a lot for what's coming next.

Volume Two opens in late 1754. Having resigned his commission in the Virginia militia, Washington pondered his future as a soldier. But by the spring of 1755, he had been made aide de camp to British general Edward Braddock. It was to prove a fateful event. Washington accompanied Braddock on his disastrous expedition to capture Fort DuQuesne (Pittsburgh), but the small army was ambushed and Braddock killed. Young Washington distinguished himself in the hopeless battle and subsequent retreat.

A pretty interesting look into us history from an outsider. As a brit he leans soft towards unions, and his economics isn't great, but his narrative is quite good as a whole.

Absurd marxist economics written in.

I'm on chapter 3, and the author is discussing the "intrinsic value of labor" and other marxist economic policies. This book is propaganda.

Historia
John Julius Norwich - called a "true master of narrative history" by Simon Sebag Montefiore - returns with the book he has spent his distinguished career wanting to write, A History of France, a portrait of the past two centuries of the country he loves best. Beginning with Julius Caesar's conquest of Gaul in the first century BC, this study of French history comprises a cast of legendary characters - Charlemagne, Louis XIV, Napoleon, Joan of Arc, and Marie Antionette, to name a few - as Norwich chronicles France's often violent, always fascinating history.

Historia
Spanning the years 1940 to 1965, Defender of the Realm, the third volume of William Manchester’s The Last Lion, picks up shortly after Winston Churchill became prime minister - when his tiny island nation stood alone against the overwhelming might of Nazi Germany. The Churchill portrayed by Manchester and Reid is a man of indomitable courage, lightning-fast intellect, and an irresistible will to action.

great, but the first 2 were better.
Revisado: 02-04-23
you have no choice if you've come this far. but I think during the ww2 areas it focuses less on churchill and more on history. regrettable. also it just briefly skims the years in semi retirement after he was no longer prime Minister. I wish that it was more personal, as I wasn't looking for a history of 43-63, but rather a detailed look into churchills life.
regardless, its a good book and worth the read. I do think that the author injected modern politics into a few places however.

A major new biography of the Civil War general and American president, by the author of the New York Times bestseller A. Lincoln. The dramatic story of one of America's greatest and most misunderstood military leaders and presidents, this is a major new interpretation of Ulysses S. Grant. Based on seven years of research with primary documents, some of them never tapped before, this is destined to become the Grant biography of our times.

Life Changing
Revisado: 11-05-22
I write this with tears in my eyes. Grant was the American Moses, who was humble and beyond patient. He is drummed out of the army, leads a life from failure to failure until his own father finally accepts him back. After this the civil war happened. Grant was beyond humane to soldiers, but beyond indomitable in the battlefield, he simply would not stop. However, when victory came he was gracious and generous. This is a man I seek to emulate, and who I think America needs again.

Disasters are inherently hard to predict. Pandemics, like earthquakes, wildfires, financial crises. and wars, are not normally distributed; there is no cycle of history to help us anticipate the next catastrophe. But when disaster strikes, we ought to be better prepared than the Romans were when Vesuvius erupted, or medieval Italians when the Black Death struck. We have science on our side, after all.

Aged like milk. Author is inconsistent.
Revisado: 03-26-22
This book is just a cash grab The author does have excellent narration skills and he is a good presenter However the historical data can easily be found in other books although it may be presented less entertainingly The reason that I'm giving this a bad review is because the author Draws conclusions that are absurd and as I am convinced he is not an idiot I suspect political motivations and Acquiescence. The reason this age like milk was because many of the any of the nations he stated as being excellent in their response to covid namely Korea aimly Korea are now being walloped by covid and abandoned the measures he claimed were so effective He goes on to bash middle management and competency from governmental administrations the world over and history over but suggests in the present era more government administration to to properly address disaster response and preparedness He never reconciles these Realities to each otherAnd as such you're left with the supreme impression that the author is blatantlyA charlatan
He is an entertaining one however and I have No personal dislike Ike for a executive to do to apply the executive's trade that of Grand inconsistency
I must apologize for the punctuation of this review I you I used my dictation feature

The narration is phenomenal, and the book itself is light hearted and enjoyable. It's an excellent blend of old saifi and Cheesy cotton man stories.. It's not high literature it's not grand fantasy but it's very enjoyable and the author's dower and sarcastic outlook really is is amusing
