Historia
1969: the height of counterculture and the year universities would seek to curb the unruly spectacle of student protest; the winter that Harvard University would begin the tumultuous process of merging with Radcliffe, its all-female sister school; and the year that Jane Britton, an ambitious 23-year-old graduate student in Harvard's Anthropology Department and daughter of Radcliffe Vice President J. Boyd Britton, would be found bludgeoned to death in her Cambridge, Massachusetts apartment.

Not a Typical True Crime Story
Revisado: 12-30-20
While there are all the elements of many true crime stories: a vulnerable person, an unexplained murder with baffling evidence and an eventual resolution, this is not your typical true crime story. This is an ethnography of life at Harvard, the study of archaeology there, and a precise and cataloged “dig” into the life and death of Jane Britton. The author painstakingly describes, reviews, and considers every possible aspect. Unlike many true crime stories the author has not decided for us how we should see this murder. The author also reads her own work. It takes a while to get used to her staccato delivery, but eventually she does breathe life into the reading.

Historia
“Why is this town called Mother’s Rest?” That’s all Reacher wants to know. But no one will tell him. It’s a tiny place hidden in a thousand square miles of wheat fields, with a railroad stop, and sullen and watchful people, and a worried woman named Michelle Chang, who mistakes him for someone else: her missing partner in a private investigation she thinks must have started small and then turned lethal.

Reader Ruins Reacher
Revisado: 09-10-15
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I'm a Jack Reacher/Lee Child fan, so a 4-5 star experience would be easily achieved with a more suitable reader.
What did you like best about this story?
Jack Reacher never disappoints--solid action and plotting.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator/reader reads all voices in a comically bad Brooklyn accent, which results in Reacher sounding very much like Grandpa Munster and any woman character like Betty Boop. It's disheartening that the person in charge of this performance did not do the research on Reacher's past. He's an Army brat and veteran and, as such, there is little in his well-traveled life or family to suggest that a vaudevillian New York accent would be appropriate. The reader's rendition of women's voices is simpering and child-like and is therefore deeply insulting to the strong women characters penned by Child. These poor production choices are so distracting that the story is difficult to listen to and detracted considerably from what had been an enjoyable experience in the past.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Make Me?
None--perfect plotting.
