Historia
Ta-Nehisi Coates originally set out to write a book about writing, in the tradition of Orwell’s classic “Politics and the English Language,” but found himself grappling with deeper questions about how our stories—our reporting and imaginative narratives and mythmaking—expose and distort our realities. In the first of the book’s three intertwining essays, Coates, on his first trip to Africa, finds himself in two places at once: in Dakar, a modern city in Senegal, and in a mythic kingdom in his mind.

Read it before it’s banned
Revisado: 11-07-24
My first Coates book but definitely not my last, he eloquently, voraciously, and comprehensively ties US slavery and today’s continuous fight for social and racial justice with the blatant realities of apartheid (and now undeniable genocide) in Palestine. 🍉

Historia
God is change. That is the central truth of the Earthseed movement, whose unlikely prophet is 18-year-old Lauren Olamina. The young woman's diary entries tell the story of her life amid a violent 21st-century hell of walled neighborhoods and drug-crazed pyromaniacs - and reveal her evolving Earthseed philosophy. Against a backdrop of horror emerges a message of hope: if we are willing to embrace divine change, we will survive to fulfill our destiny among the stars.

Community and faith in something as an answer to utter despair
Revisado: 05-22-24
This was brutal to listen to but the writing and voice acting had me compelled. Lauren is inspiring despite the horrific tragedy upon tragedy she had to endure. Takes place in 2024 and sadly many of the facets of America described here are not far from reality. Unfettered Capitalism and climate catastrophe will lead us closer to this

Just do it
Revisado: 05-09-22
If you’ve been on the fence of diving 100% into Scrum (or Lean, Agile, continuous improvement), this book will push you over the edge to just do it already!!! Convincingly well written with practical application and great anecdotes and research. Audiobook is well spoken too.

Essential for those in the field AND in the office
Revisado: 04-08-21
This is not just for superintendents. Having worked in construction on the design and owner side of things, I still found the wisdom and practices described very valuable. I like how Jason frames that the heart of the problem he is trying to solve is giving those in construction more time with their families, less stress, better physical and mental health. He describes practical solutions based on Lean and many respected books on management.

Historia
Thirty years after its publication, The Death and Life of Great American Cities was described by The New York Times as "perhaps the most influential single work in the history of town planning....[It] can also be seen in a much larger context. It is first of all a work of literature; the descriptions of street life as a kind of ballet and the bitingly satiric account of traditional planning theory can still be read for pleasure even by those who long ago absorbed and appropriated the book's arguments."

...and Jacobs’ insights are still disregarded by those making disastrous and unsustainable policy and planning decisions. She was way ahead of her time and this is essential reading for all engaged in city planning and community building, professionals or otherwise.

Historia
Rules for Revolutionaries is a bold challenge to the political establishment and the "rules" that govern campaign strategy. It tells the story of a breakthrough experiment conducted on the fringes of the Bernie Sanders presidential campaign: A technology-driven team empowered volunteers to build and manage the infrastructure to make 75 million calls, launch eight million text messages, and hold more than 100,000 public meetings - in an effort to put Bernie Sanders' insurgent campaign over the top.
