Historia
Formed in 1988, Lush were part of the London gig scene during one of the most vibrant and creative periods in UK music. Now, Miki Berenyi tells all. The audiobook begins with her childhood of extremes. From the bohemian lifestyle of her father's social circle to the privileged glamour of her mother's acting career, Miki's young life was a blur of travel, celebrities and private schooling. But frequent relocation, parental neglect and the presence of her abusive grandmother resulted in crippling shyness, mental-health issues and a vulnerability. The route out of this hole was music.

I loved it.
Revisado: 05-17-24
I'm listening to it a second time! I don't want to include any spoilers here, but Miki is very open about some VERY PERSONAL things. I've always LOVED her singing (and the way she and Emma sounded when they sang together), but this made her narration very appealing - she's got a great, easy to identify voice. The lollapalooza stories are worth the price of admission alone. Again, I don't want to be too specific, but I was quite moved by the stuff about her Dad. She describes a very complicated relationship with Emma, but she is also quick to praise her for her songwriting capabilities, and you come away from the book with the knowledge that without Emma, there would never have been a Lush in the first place, and that their success had everything to do with Emma's songs. I might be a little bit biased in my review, because I was and still am a HUGE fan, but I think there's plenty to like about the book to enjoy it even if you've never heard their music, and if you fit that description, hopefully the book will inspire you to give them a listen.

Historia
When Mark Lanegan first arrived in Seattle in the mid-1980s, he was just "an arrogant, self-loathing redneck waster seeking transformation through rock 'n' roll." Little did he know that within less than a decade, he would rise to fame as the frontman of the Screaming Trees, and then fall from grace as a low-level crack dealer and a homeless heroin addict, all the while watching some of his closest friends rocket to the forefront of popular music.

He gives the shaft to Liam Gallagher
Revisado: 10-06-22
This is the most harrowing account of heroin addiction I've ever encountered. He holds nothing back. My favorite part of this book is when the Judge reads off Mark's full criminal record (AS A MINOR) - it goes on and on and on - it's the most unbelievable thing I've ever heard!!! His account of Liam Gallagher's behavior on tour is hilarious and worth the price of admission alone. I literally can't listen to Oasis anymore because I can't get past what a total pussy that guy is. What a tool. It's no wonder Noel Gallagher refuses to ever either speak to or play with him anymore. But I digress. These are just a couple of anecdotes in an autobiography so illuminating and profound that it makes it nearly impossible to stop listening. His voice as narrator is so expressive, and he is a beautiful writer to boot. I listened to this 3 times in a row, and raved about it to all my friends. I did this prior to his passing, but am writing this after. One last thing I will say is that his mom is possibly the most disturbing character in a book full of messed up people. She's a disgrace, and a total jerk with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. She should go outside and play hide and go f herself. I still feel this way about her and it's been several months since I last listened to this. Unreal. I would also do heroin every day of my life if I had a mother like that. R.I.P. Mark.
