Historia
Fantasy, love and an exuberant celebration of English life and literature, Orlando is a uniquely entertaining story. Originally conceived by Virginia Woolf as a playful tribute to the family of her friend and lover, Vita Sackville-West, Orlando's central character, a fictional embodiment of Sackville-West, changes sex from a man to a woman and lives throughout the centuries, whilst meeting historical figures of English literature.

I Got through It
Revisado: 11-09-23
I'm not a big fan of Virginia Woolf. I find her really hard to read. Mrs. Dalloway was okay but Orlando was work.
The reader did an excellent job otherwise I would have never made it through the last third of the novel.
Let's face it, this was an obligation read. One of those books that "every woman should read." At least now, I can check it off my list.

So much better than I thought it would be
Revisado: 07-31-23
Think the author did a terrific job of mixing real life experience with research into science & medicine & psychology.
Part of this book was very difficult to listen to but it seemed that she knew just went to lighten up.
I admired her openness with the myriad of therapeutic options available. I could feel myself rolling my eyes in exasperation as she encountered some of these therapists but she did a really good job of explaining why people and some scientists found these therapies appropriate and useful. I felt obligated to reel my judgmental nature back a bit and give these folks a chance.

Great fun
Revisado: 05-22-23
This is a lot of fun to listen to. Unfortunately, the synopsis gave away the ending so you knew what direction the story was going but it didn't matter. The performances were very good and it was fun to see how the writer would get us the ending.

Beautifully written
Revisado: 05-14-23
The book has some beautiful writing & interesting characters although it is a bit predictable. There is a pervasive sense of disaster that I didn't really enjoy. I kept waiting for tragedy and was not disappointed.

Teenage girls now have immense physical power: They can cause agonizing pain and even death. And, with this small twist of nature, the world drastically resets.

Interesting
Revisado: 04-06-23
The narrator was great here! The voices and accents were really distinctive. Worth a listen for the story although some of it is a bit cliché if you've read much feminist literature. Still, lots of things to think about.
Nice thought exercise for examining your own preconceptions.

Historia
In June 2021, a senseless event upends the lives of hundreds of men and women, all passengers on a flight from Paris to New York. Among them: Blake, a respectable family man, though he works as a contract killer; Slimboy, a Nigerian pop star tired of living a lie; Joanna, a formidable lawyer whose flaws have caught up with her; and Victor Miesel, a critically acclaimed yet commercially unsuccessful writer who suddenly becomes a cult hit. All of them believed they had double lives. None imagined just how true that was.

Mixed bag
Revisado: 02-02-23
This was a good listen. Some parts of the plot were derivative. I can make a list of books and movies that predate the novel with similar concepts. That being said, parts of it were really original with interesting thinking. I could've done without (SPOILER ALERT) the business about the dead dog. Some of the philosophical/scientific conversations/diatribes took me back to college with much of the same coma inducing effect. These bits required a double listen. Overall, I recommend. Confession: I did have to Wikipedia the ending to confirm that it ended the way I thought.

The Colour of Magic, the first novel in Terry Pratchett's wildly imaginative Discworld series, takes the listener on a remarkable journey. The magical planet of Discworld is supported by four massive elephants who stand on the back of the Great A'Tuin, a giant turtle swimming slowly through the mysterious interstellar gulf. An eccentric expedition sets out to explore the planet, encountering dragons who only exist if you believe in them, and of course "The Edge" of the planet.

Historia
When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

Much Better Than I Remembered
Revisado: 02-15-22
I'm sure I read this years ago or maybe, I've just seen so many TV and film versions that I thought I had read it. At any rate, either it's gotten better or my appreciation for classic literature has improved. I really enjoyed listening and discovered a wealth of detail that I must've skipped right over when reading. I certainly did not remember her cousin, Rev. Rivers, being such an ass!
I thought the narrator did a great job. She's an actress that I like anyway but I never considered her voice apart from her acting.
