a fairytale with a deep theme

Magic Bitter, Magic Sweet is an interesting story with many layers.

First layer is the mystery of Mare and her lost memory. Who is she, where is she from and why does she have magic? The theories write themselves and keep you guessing til the end.

The second layer is the origin of the fairy tale baked goods. Where did Alice get her size changing confections? How do you build a house of gingerbread? Why does the gingerbread man run so fast?

The third Layer is the deepest. What does it mean to be human, to have a soul, to love so much it hurts?

This tapestry of a story is beautifully read with lots of emotion and different voices for the characters that all adds to the written words.

Murder at Mistlethwaite Manor, is sadly not about the mystious setting of The Secret Garden. Instead this Manor is a Christie esque murder mystery. You know the kind where every suspect has a scandal and the motives are all based on social status.

The story is well written and the clues all lead to a logical conclusion. The romance was one to root for, the main lovers blocked by the conflict of wealth and social standing.

The narrator does a fantastic job with performing the story. She gives a new voice for each character and her voice is overall perfect for the person POV of the main character.

Whoa! I admit to watching the movie first but nothing they can do on screen will ever be a match for the intimacy of the written word.

Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is not first person POV like the Hunger Games was. But it is third person limited which means we get the inner working of Snow's brain. The reader gets to see exactly what he's thinking every step of the way. Watching this character spiral from conflicted to evil is such a trip.

Collins pulls it off in a way that Hollywood is just not equipped to match, no matter how talented the actors and director are.

The narrator of the audio edition nails Snow in his performance. Though I do dislike the way he voices the female characters. Thankfully the story draws you in enough to ignore it, also there just aren't that many women characters.

No Middle book syndrome here

usually the middle books in series can feel a bit unnecessary like they only exist to fill space.

Heir of Uncertain Magic by Charlie M. Holmburg is what all middle books should aspire to be. It is a sequel true, it builds on previous events, but it has its own plot and its own satisfying conclusion. No cliffhangers here.

It's so well constructed that I almost suspect this was meant to be a duology.

Whatever the original plan was, I wish more series could be written like this.

Merritt and Hulda are still full characters with great chemistry. But the spirit/dog Owain gets a POV this time too, and I am even more in love with him.

The duel narrators are back once again. They excel at bringing the story to life with voices and accents for each character.

Keeper of Enchanted Rooms is a fascinating story with a unique magic system and relatable characters.

Merritt is a Cinnamon roll of a make lead with a wounded heart. Hulda is the best kind of strong female. The capable kind who is still fully femine.

The real stand out character though is the haunted house. Owain is the character I want to cuddle and comfort. I want to read the rest of the series just see what happens to this delightful spirit.

I loved every minute of this audio performance. The multiple narrator format only added to the immersion.

curses do not have happy endings

Cursed is exactly like it sounds, a collection of short stories that all center around curses or the people afflicted by them.

A couple of these stories do feature people who break their curses or who come to see their curses in a positive light but for the most part these are heavy stories with little hope and no happily ever after.

All of the stories are masterfully written and performed by talented narrators. Just be aware that this might not be what you want to hear just before you fall asleep.

The completely true prequel to WWI

The events that really sparked the first world war are so unbelievable and contrived that this novel feels like a much more believable account.

Of course, if you've read the first two Miss Sharp's Monsters books, you know that the timeline won't allow for the great war for many more years. Even so the events of this novel are the match that lights the fuse.

I was completely enthralled with everything about this story. The tension, the characters and the power behind the royal monsters. I also loved how the author seamlessly wove her faith into the story as Liz Sharp struggled with her own search for truth.

The narrator did a remarkable job, as she has on the previous two books. She brings each character to life with a different voice and she exhibits a great range of emotions and an impeccable sense of comedy, as she perfectly nails Sharp's sarcastic asides.

A Vampire in Bavaria is a thrilling conclusion not to be missed, but only after you read the first two books.

A Christmas story for Fowl fans

Naturally when I saw Eoin Colfer had written a Christmas book, the first thing I wondered was if it took place in the Artemis Fowl world.

And while it's not out right stated, none of the added lore contradicts the Artemis Fowl farie lore.

The actual story revolves around a young girl named Juniper Lane, and she is a likeable and capable eleven-year-old.
Nico/Santa is probably one of the most unique depictions I've come across in awhile. I really loved that even though he gave up on Christmas, he still kept giving to those most in need. I mean it really is a much better use of the magic resources.

The villain of the story, Trude Madden, is oddly forgettable. I guess it's because like most Christmas tales the real villain isn't a person but humanity's unwillingness to believe in a little Christmas magic.

The plot is clever and contains Colfer's classic convolutedness and situational humor. His unique mix of magic as a scientific system, showed up again and is played to it's fullest potential.

The narrator did an amazing job, she gave each character a different voice that suited them perfectly and she gave the emotional scenes the weight they deserved.

I am so glad I dove right into Spellmaker after finishing Spellbreaker. This is more of a part two than it is a sequel.

The characters are what really make this story come to life. They were each so unique with realistic and sympathetic flaws. Elsie was the heart of the story with literal abandonment issues.

the duel narrators were fantastic at bringing the characters voices to life and reading this book in an entertaining and engaging manner.

The entire story concluded in a satisfying way but still had that dangling ... life goes on, type of tease hinting that the characters have more to go through, but we won't be along for the ride.

A proper Introduction to Dragons is the fourth book in the Jane Austen's Dragons series. But it is in fact — a prequel.

The story is very sweet. I loved getting to know young Lizzie and seeing how she met April. This book is easy to say yes of course you should read this first since it's both chronologically first as well as explains a lot of the world building. But so much of the audience for this series is only here for the Jane Austen story line. So therefore they would skip any books labeled prequel anyway.

Parts of the story will make more sense after having rea the first three books anyway.

Benjamin Fife does a fantastic job as always. He reads the book smoothly and does a different voice for each character.
