Great writing and narration
Revisado: 12-11-24
It takes a very talented writer to make a hard-boiled character like Mary Pat feel so real, relatable and even understandable. We watch her evolve by leaps and yet continued to be bounded by the only way of life she has ever known. Helping an audience gain a better understanding to the resistance to integration takes a careful balance of empathy and judgment, which the author achieves masterfully.

Historia
It was easy for Elizabeth. She married the man she loved, bore him two children and made a home for him which was the envy of their friends. It was harder for Ruth. She married Elizabeth’s son and then found that, somehow, she could never quite measure up. Isolation, deceit and betrayal fill the gaps between the two individual women and between their different worlds. In this complex thriller, Philippa Gregory deploys all her insight into what women want and what women fear, as Ruth confronts the shifting borders of her own sanity.

Not a mystery or thriller
Revisado: 08-30-24
This book was not at all as advertised. I bought it because it was listed as a domestic mystery/thriller but it isn’t at all. It’s just a book about domestic abuse. While I liked The Other Boleyn Girl, this book was a tedious descent into the grips of an interfering mother-in-law. If you want to read a book about a girl without the resources to resist the demands of her controlling in-laws, go for it. I found it nothing more than unpleasant.

Well-imagined book. Don’t wander into these woods!! Compelling horror/thriller/detective story. My only big complaint is that it wasn’t narrated by an Australian narrator. The book was clearly written by an Australian author and having so many words and phrases being used that an American would never say felt jarring coming from a narrator with an American accent.

Characters as Memorable as Katniss
Revisado: 01-17-24
Excellent insight into the making of Snow. It was clear how his responses to his environment along with his innate personality traits created a character like the one we meet in The Hunger Games. Lucy Grey is almost as heroic as Katniss in her own way, and certainly as memorable. Excellent story, excellent character development, excellent narration. If you liked The Hunger Games, you will not be disappointed in this book.

Historia
By the time she was in her teens, Diamond had lived dozens of lives and lies, but as she grew older, love and trust turned to fear and violence, and her family—the only people she had in the world—began to unravel. She started to realize that her life itself might be a big con, and the people she loved, the most dangerous of all. With no way out and her identity burned so often that she had no proof she even existed, all that was left was a girl from nowhere.

Historia
Everyone has wanted their favorite book to be real, if only for a moment. Everyone has wished to meet their favorite characters, if only for a day. But be careful in that wish, for even a history laid in ink can be repaid in flesh and blood, and reality is far deadlier than fiction...especially on Addington Isle.

Revisado: 07-27-23
This was a masterpiece of literary horror. Totally unexpected - a new take on childhood trauma and redemption, the sins of our fathers and more. Superb writing - both the book and the book within the book. It is all woven together seamlessly, but listen well. There is so much packed into every sentence that you cannot zone out for even a second. I frequently found myself using the rewind button to make sure I didn’t miss a single magical, terrifying word (I’m not one for horror of any type, but I am one for great writing and this author made my journey into this genre totally worthwhile)!
