Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Dialogue
Revisado: 02-17-25
This historical novel kept my attention. Almost two centuries ago yet it could be a story of today’s women. The scenes were palpable, the characters touching, fear inducing and authentic. The love scenes romantic and loving. Thinking of the book, it’s as if I had viewed a film. I will soon read another of Ariel’s books.

Historia
In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child—not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power—the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.

Magical, compelling and excellent
Revisado: 07-02-24
Madeline Miller’s language in her descriptions is both lyrical and vivid. Captivating and compelling. I was ostracized in this story and looking forward to reading another. Lessons for other writers although she is a star.

Unbalanced
Revisado: 01-31-22
I should have read the synopsis more carefully and also looked at who chose the “Best…Spreches.” Too many excellent speeches by women missing. Very unbalanced. All of these speeches can be found online. Didn’t bother listening to it as I’d already heard or read them. Returning it was declined.

Historia
In her mesmerizing fourth work of fiction, Sue Monk Kidd takes an audacious approach to history and brings her acclaimed narrative gifts to imagine the story of a young woman named Ana. Raised in a wealthy family with ties to the ruler of Galilee, she is rebellious and ambitious, with a brilliant mind and a daring spirit. She engages in furtive scholarly pursuits and writes narratives about neglected and silenced women. Ana is expected to marry an older widower, a prospect that horrifies her. An encounter with 18-year-old Jesus changes everything.

Full of history, sweet, poetic language and on the edge action bringing the reader right up to present day. Sue Monk Kidd offers a compelling real time issue for the story. I ended up binge listening; I was enthralled.

Historia
This astonishing memoir was hailed as an instant classic when first published in Colombia in 2012, nearly a decade after the death of its author, who was encouraged in her writing by Gabriel García Márquez. Comprised of letters written over the course of 30 years, and translated and introduced by acclaimed writer Daniel Alarcón, it describes in vivid, painterly detail the remarkable courage and limitless imagination of a young girl growing up with nothing.

Emma Reyes, unearthed treasure
Revisado: 03-06-20
So sorry this book had to end. Her words were beautifully placed together; unusual. So refreshing in the land of a bizzillion books and a bizzillion words and phrases.
