Another Outstanding Ballard & Bosch Novel
Revisado: 02-03-23
I was really into this one and kept wanting to listen to see what was going to happen next. I like the Ballard/Bosch team, and I don't want to see it come to an end. Great narration performances and interesting storyline. I definitely recommend.

Historia
There’s chaos in Hollywood at the end of the New Year’s Eve countdown. Working her graveyard shift, LAPD detective Renée Ballard waits out the traditional rain of lead as hundreds of revelers shoot their guns into the air. Only minutes after midnight, Ballard is called to a scene where a hardworking auto shop owner has been fatally hit by a bullet in the middle of a crowded street party.

Couldn't Put It Down
Revisado: 01-08-23
I finished this pretty quickly, because it was a total "page turner". The storyline was complex and held my interest. I truly could've done without all the political commentary that was woven in, to the extent that it was. Less frequent, broader references to everything happening in 2020-21 would have been sufficient with setting the scene and social climate. It didn't have to be so prolific. We have to hear enough about it on the news and on social media. I want a fiction audiobook to be an escape. Aside from my thoughts on that, the scenes were well set and characters well-developed. I was caught up and couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. I totally recommend it. If you are highly triggered by pandemic/ political/ social issue commentary, then I would skip this one. If you can ignore it and focus on the meat and potatoes of the storyline, then you'll love this book. Oh, and the narration was great. There's more Christine Lakin as Ballard, but she does an excellent job with the performance and delivery. Titus Welliver as Bosch is great, as usual. He is Bosch, after all. And, yes, the story is focused more on Ballard than Bosch. Bosch is retired. The storyline in the books starts at least a decade before the TV series. He is older in the books than his character in the series. He is retired. The series has to branch somewhere, because he's not Benjamin Button.

Captivating storyline
Revisado: 10-23-22
The storyline was a "page turner", especially towards the beginning of the book with the battle and escape scenes. It did slow down after that, but it still held my attention. I would love to see this made into a movie. Narration was good. Will Damron has a slower cadence, but I've listened to other books that he's narrated; so I guess I am used to his voice and tempo. Charlotte Brentan seemed hesitant and felt too slow for me with the female narration. Her inflection is fine; and overall, it's not distracting from the storyline. It's just not quite "there" for me, but that's totally just my opinion. Overall, I enjoyed this book; and I would recommend.

A Page Turner
Revisado: 08-25-22
If this were a hardcover, I'd be waiting to turn the page and see what happened next. I really thought this was well-written, suspenseful, and entertaining. It definitely held my attention. The performance voices were a little off to me, because German characters are being read in an English accent and most female voices sound the same; but I don't really feel like those things distracted me too much overall from enjoying the book. In summary, I recommend this book if you love anything WWII, historical fiction, or just love a good storyline.

Good But Not Great
Revisado: 08-13-22
Honestly, I found there were too many characters and points of view to keep up with. The author was constantly switching between narratives; and I think if it had been more simplified, it would've been easier to follow and been better at keeping my focus. It wasn't a terrible storyline, but I just wasn't pulled into the book needing to know the next steps. The narration performances were fine. I wouldn't necessarily recommend over other historical fiction novels, but I wouldn't tell anyone not to read it or listen to it- if that makes any sense at all.

Page Turner
Revisado: 06-23-22
If this weren't an audiobook but a paperback or hardcover, I'd definitely call it a page turner. I found myself really needing to know what was going to happen next. I thought it was well written, and the scenes beautifully set. If you can't handle references to having faith in God, then I guess it would be "too religious" for you, as some reviews mentioned. It just references their faith and reliance upon God to get them through and provide for them. It wasn't a sermon. Anyway, I loved it. There was plenty of plot twists, drama, and action; and it kept me interested.

Meh.
Revisado: 10-17-21
I know this is supposed to be a psychological thriller, but it didn't really pull me and make me want to keep reading. I kept going for the sake of finishing. The ending was lackluster, and I didn't enjoy it like I wanted to. Joshua Jackson has always had a somewhat flat, monotone delivery; but it's better when you see him on screen, because his actions and facial expressions compensate for his lack of inflection and emotion. I just don't think he is someone who is best at performing audiobooks. He's not the worst by far, but definitely not the best. Overall, my thought is "meh". It was included with my Audible membership, so it didn't cost me a credit. If it had, I would've returned it not long after starting.

Good Listen
Revisado: 10-07-21
I liked this book. I didn't find it riveting, and I wasn't totally enthralled to find out what would happen next. It was a good story, but it was a little lackluster. I don't regret listening to it, but I've listened to so many really great books set in WWII; and this one paled a little in comparison. Cassandra Campbell's narration is good. The male voice variation and inflection could have maybe used improvement, but it didn't stop me from enjoying the book. Overall, I guess this was a tepid read for me. Someone may enjoy it more than I did, though.

Great Listen
Revisado: 09-30-21
This was on sale, and it had pretty good reviews; so I thought I'd check it out. I'm not disappointed that I did. I really enjoyed it. It had enough mystery in the storyline to keep it lightly entertaining, but not heavy and overwhelming. It had plenty of sadness, but there are happy/peaceful resolutions. It's made me want to look into other books by Ann Bennett. I thought Naomi Frederick did a great job with the narration, but I did increase the speed slightly as a preference. I didn't struggle to get through it like some other books I've listened to recently. Overall, I definitely recommend.
