Historia
Slough House is a dumping ground for British intelligence agents who've screwed up cases in any number of ways - by leaving a secret file on a train or blowing a surveillance. River Cartwright, one such "slow horse", is bitter about his failure and about his tedious assignment transcribing cell phone conversations. When a young man is abducted and his kidnappers threaten to broadcast his beheading live on the Internet, River sees an opportunity to redeem himself.

Stick With It
Revisado: 08-28-23
I almost gave up on this book because there were so many characters to keep up with and they all seemed to be downtrodden, pathetic and unlikable. I get it - that was the point, but it started to become a downer. The narrator was also so low-key it was tedious trying to discern the different voices. Once you got past the character backstories, however, and into the actual story it picked up and became interesting. I’m glad I made it to the end - which sorta/kinda made up for the wait. After finishing the book I started on the TV show which so far seems to stick very closely to the book.

Read instead of listen
Revisado: 01-09-23
I love the Thursday Murder Club books, so after reading the first two I decided to buy the audio version of this recent one. Bad idea. The narrator almost whispers if she’s not reading a specific character’s dialogue. When she IS reading as a specific character it’s nearly impossible to tell them apart. She tries to make them different by speaking more haltingly or speeding up her words. No inflection changes just. each. word. spoken. slowly. I have recommended the series to everyone because the stories are clever and engaging, but if someone new to the series started with this audiobook they might give up and miss out.

Had Such High Hopes
Revisado: 11-16-22
I am a huge “Friends” fan and a fan of Matthew Perry in particular. I pre-ordered this book and was really looking forward to hearing it. If you have read any of the blurbs from the reviews and/or interviews prior to the book actually being released, then you probably already know the highlights that were revealed. The bulk of the book was about his alcohol and drug addiction. I got the impression it was written as a cathartic exercise. Having practically no first-hand experience with addiction I can’t relate to the situations he describes, but he does hammer down on it being very very bad. It was sad, pathetic, deplorable and seemingly endless and hopeless. Specifically addressing the way the book is written, there are a few issues that just can’t be ignored when listening. The story jumps all over the place and is not cohesive at all. Several times I had to stop and repeat a section to make sure I had not missed an important fact that would have made things make sense. Some stories are repeated (a LOT) and the timeline is wonky. Another thing that got to the ridiculous stage was how many times he said some version of the F-bomb. Maybe he was trying to be edgy, but it eventually came off as just lazy – and it became a distraction when it was used every other sentence. When I start keeping count of how many times it’s being said (was that 487 or 489?) then the rest of the narrative is overshadowed. A good editor would have been helpful to not only get it in some kind of sensible order but also to whittle it down a bit and lose the repetitive parts. I realize this is his story to tell and I understand why he wants to be the one reading it, but it was painful to listen to his slurred speech. The print version might have been a better choice for me.

Quiet and aloof rock star Jake McKallister and outspoken, vivacious college student Casey Caldwell are polar opposites: Casey is bubbly and talkative; Jake is reclusive. Casey enjoyed a picturesque childhood; Jake’s childhood could only be described as a well-publicized nightmare. Jake’s life revolves around music, and Casey can’t carry a tune.

Sexy But Sweet
Revisado: 08-20-17
I'm a sucker for a good love story - especially if you throw in a rock star heartthrob and sassy heroine. I'm more of a "teen-at-heart" than anywhere close to actual teen, but I was completely enthralled with CAKE. Maybe because I could totally identify with the fantasy of falling in love with a rock star....and having him love you back. The story was sweet and progressed without all the boy meets girl, boy loses girl, etc. Just enough suspense about Jake's past to make him intriguing and just enough mean girl drama for Casey to triumph over and win Jake's heart. Just enough sexy interludes to keep them from being too pristine and dull. The narrators were also expressive and pleasing.

Sci-Fi / AI / Oh My!
Revisado: 06-22-17
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Absolutely! Such an entertaining story.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Other than "original" Bob, I was partial to Bill and Riker.
Have you listened to any of Ray Porter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Not yet, but I will definitely seek him out now - he's very talented as a narrator.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The end - when I realized the story continued. Already halfway through part 2.
Any additional comments?
Story was excellent, narration was superb. Anyone who can believably mimic Admiral Ackbar deserves praise just for that.

From the provocative and hilarious EGOT winner, best-selling author, and host of The View, Whoopi Goldberg, comes the perfect antidote to all those outdated relationship advice books in the world, weighing in on why marriage isn't for everybody, and how the life you want shouldn't be the life everyone else expects you to have. Now, Whoopi will speak openly about why marriage isn't for everyone, how being alone can be satisfying, and how what's most important is understanding who you are and what makes you happy.

Like Chatting With An Old Friend
Revisado: 06-22-17
Would you consider the audio edition of If Someone Says "You Complete Me," RUN! to be better than the print version?
Having Whoopi talk to you? Definitely better.
What other book might you compare If Someone Says "You Complete Me," RUN! to and why?
Other than the "self-help" angle, it was an entertaining narrative read by a talented author and actor - similar to Kate Mulgrew, Rob Lowe.
What does Whoopi Goldberg bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
She's so...genuine and engaging.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Whenever she laughs at what she's saying.
Any additional comments?
Made me want to listen to the other books she reads.

Historia
Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

For Star Trek Fans or Wil Wheaton Fans
Revisado: 06-22-17
I'm not saying non-Trekkies won't enjoy the story but it will definitely be funnier and more entertaining to fans. I laughed out loud when one of the characters whispered with their last breath: "This is so....ridiculous!" As to the Three Codas at the end, I understand why they were included and they do add a sort of explanation after the fact, but I would have been content if the book had ended without them. I really like Wil Wheaton's narration but (as others before me have stated) the constant "he said / she said" becomes distracting. The story weaves together nicely and resolved itself quite satisfactorily for me.

Fortunately for bounty hunter Stephanie Plum, Larry is just stupid enough to attempt almost the exact same crime again. After waiting 20 books for Stephanie to get back together with Ranger we get "bring it on" and then flash forward to the next morning? What a tease! I love the Stephanie Plum stories and the crazy stuff she and Lula can get into, but I'm irritated with the sexual tension that never leads anywhere with Ranger. If you're not going to let us in on the fun she finally has with Ranger just marry her off to Joe and be done with it.

SHERLOCK HOLMES VS JACK THE RIPPER
Revisado: 09-23-16
What's not to like? The story was clever and managed to weave in most of the facts about Jack the Ripper as dealt with by Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. The narrator reminded me of the old Basil Rathbone movie version of Holmes. He managed the different British dialects convincingly and even sounded pretty good as a woman. Audiobooks live and die with the narrator no matter how good the story would be if read from the book, so it's nice to have this one read properly.
