Sorry I used a credit for this one
Revisado: 11-19-24
From the description of the book I didn’t expect just a romance novel. But that’s all it is: a romance novel. Some reviewers love the book. Others said the main character rambled too much (she did!) and that the simpering voice the narrater used for Claire when speaking to her ex was hard to stomach (it was). What angered me the most (spoiler alert) was how the new love interest turned out to be just as manipulative and cringey as the ex.
If romance novels are your thing, and you enjoy hearing (over and over and over… and over) about a good looking manly man, you’ll probably enjoy this book. But if you want a good read that goes beneath the surface of family and romantic relationships, use your credit for something else.

Alison Kerby’s guesthouse is haunted all year round. Surviving the dead of winter, though? That’s a spooky proposition. Even with a blizzard bearing down on New Jersey, Alison can count on at least two guests—Paul and Maxie, the stubborn ghosts who share her shore town inn.

The ending was a disappointment
Revisado: 11-27-22
I had not read any other books in this series, so I went back to the beginning a few times to get to know the characters, because there are a lot of them. They are likable enough, and Amanda Ronconi’s narration is a hoot! The reason I gave the story only two stars is because I was expecting some sort of surprising twist at the end. There is a sinister buildup to why Alison’s ghost dad is missing, with creepy written messages and warnings from scary-looking ghosts. The twists and turns in the subplot were satisfying, and I stayed up way past my bedtime to get to the end of the book to find out what happened to Allison’s father. But the big reveal was a big disappointment.

Horrible
Revisado: 08-12-22
I didn’t like any of the characters, including Iris who was portrayed as the ultimate victim. I hated the narrator’s sarcastic “mean girl” inflections. If you enjoy keeping up with the Kardashians you might enjoy this. Otherwise, don’t waste your time.

Historia
In the volatile and shifting political atmosphere of Eastern Europe after World War II, an inexperienced homicide detective fresh out of the academy is assigned a crime that no one wants to solve. Set in a bombed-out city in an unnamed country formerly occupied by the Germans and now by the Russians, the story follows Emil Brod as he unravels the threads of the cover-up of a brutal murder, while supporting his grandparents, his only family, in the equally brutal city.

I regret listening to this book.
Revisado: 05-29-22
My usual reads are cozy mysteries, but decided to try this historical noir thriller. I regret it deeply. Too much violence, cruelty, and pure evil throughout. The narrator does not do female voices well. His Elena sounds like a heavy smoker who is well past her fifties, not a beautiful twenty-something. I won’t be choosing anything by this author or this narrator in the future.

Love it? Or hate it?
Revisado: 03-26-22
I love a good mystery, and this sounded like an interesting premise. Unfortunately it dwindled into a sloppy romance novel, sans any bodice ripping. At the beginning the five abductees wonder what they have in common, or why they were chosen. At the end, when the “bad guy” discloses the grand plot it was ….. anticlimactic. A good mystery sows clues throughout the story, and a satisfying ending ties all the clues together. In this title, the “twist” at the end came out of nowhere. I’m too disappointed to care that the remaining two characters will supposedly live happily ever after. Put me down as “hated it.”

Unlistenable.
Revisado: 08-11-21
Despite what many reviewers said about this narrator, I decided to give this book a chance because some reviews said she did a great job, or at least okay. But I only got as far as chapter 7 before giving up. Place me on the side of those who could not finish the book because the sing-song rhythm of her voice grated on my nerves.

Disappointing.
Revisado: 10-22-20
This narrator was not very good at differentiating each character by voice which made the story difficult to follow. I had to rewind many times throughout the book to figure out who was speaking.
Overall, the story and its conclusion were disappointing.

There's just one slight problem. It's only been 23 years since the Demon King's latest rise, and this time, he's already conquered more than half the world. Revisado: 05-17-20
If watching someone else play video games is your idea of entertainment, you might enjoy this audiobook. The other reviews for this title were very positive, so even though I’m not into video games I thought it might be enjoyable. But no, it wasn’t.

Historia
The year is 1933. Maisie Dobbs is contacted by an Indian gentleman who has come to England in the hopes of finding out who killed his sister two months ago. Scotland Yard failed to make any arrest in the case, and there is reason to believe they failed to conduct a thorough investigation. The case becomes even more challenging when another Indian woman is murdered just hours before a scheduled interview. Meanwhile, unfinished business from a previous case becomes a distraction, as does a new development in Maisie's personal life.

Not one of her best
Revisado: 12-11-19
I have been enjoying the Maisie Dobbs books, and I will continue to read the rest of the series. But this one is my least favorite. Usually there are clues that point towards one suspect or another, but discovering who-dunnit can still be a surprise as all the loose ends get tied together. However, in this storyline all the clues seemed to point to one character, but the problem was we didn’t get to actually meet this character until close to the end of the book. We never do get to know him, and I wasn’t convinced he was guilty. I kept hoping there would be a twist to the storyline. There wasn’t. But there were a lot of loose ends that never got resolved.

Successful people confront well. They know that setting healthy boundaries improves relationships and can solve important problems. They have discovered that uncomfortable situations can be avoided or resolved through direct conversation. But most of us don't know how to have difficult conversations, and we see confrontation as scary or adversarial.

Written for a Christian audience
Revisado: 09-23-18
I purchased this audio book after reading the reviews. None mentioned the Christian message in this book. So I was taken aback when hearing "God's plan" numerous times in the first chapter. I continued to listen for awhile, hoping to find something worthwhile pertaining to the topic of difficult conversations. But I found it increasingly hard to listen to. I want to return this selection and get an audible credit towards something else.
