This was very good as an audiobook but I’m buying the hard copy to re-read.

Chapter 5 is One of my favorites as it explains the reaction to FEAR and why politicians, activists, and marketers rely on it so heavily.

This is a story well told with insightful details on the personal lives of the men who fought and their families at home. The author provides a great review of the risks and sacrifices to the French Resistance assumed in fighting the Germans and protecting the American servicemen. Good Book - I recommend it.

The last decade has seen unbelievable events unfold in the Middle East, North Africa, and other strategic locations. This book exposes a great deal about how the US responded to the events that have occurred during this time. JSOC, the brain child of McChrystal and an exceptional cadre of professional soldiers developed technologies, strategies and tactics that vastly expanded the capabilities and effectiveness of the US counter terrorism teams.

I'm not sure when I learned that both of my grandpa's were combat vets (infantry - WW1) but I remember as a boy feeling perturbed that they refused to ever tell me war stories. Sometimes they were angry refusals.

Now, thanks to first hand accounts of combat like this, I can clearly see why. I'm sad and slightly embarrassed for that naive young boy whose questions must have churned up such painful and bitter memories.

This story needs to be told and remembered so that others might be spared the agony and horrors of war.

The Ottoman Empire fell just over 100 years ago. I am embarrassed how little I knew about this tumultuous conflict its cost in blood and treasure and its lasting legacy which reaches into and shapes the current affairs of the region.

Simon Prebble gives an exceptional performance of a classic and timeless story. I try to read this every couple of years as a treat.
