uniquely enjoyable
Revisado: 04-21-25
much like the "Hyperion" series, this is a plot built from the depths of imagination but crafted with detailed mastery... the narration is great & the characters are relatable to the point it's hard to stop listening to this audio production. a scary, personal look a violence, what fuels it & ultimately, how 1 may defeat it, this book is a kinda historic detective/adventure romp from Nazi Germany to 1980's USA that I found really engaging & enjoyable

Among the ashes of a dying world, an agent of the Commandment finds a letter. It reads: Burn before reading. Thus begins an unlikely correspondence between two rival agents hellbent on securing the best possible future for their warring factions. Now, what began as a taunt, a battlefield boast, becomes something more. Something epic. Something romantic. Something that could change the past and the future. Except the discovery of their bond would mean the death of each of them. There’s still a war going on, after all. And someone has to win. That’s how war works, right?

love or hate
Revisado: 03-25-25
you'll most likely either love or hate this book. I found it quite beautiful. the narration is a bit forced at times but the writing & concept are top notch. I really enjoyed this dual point of view, touching yet well crafted story of two people & the roles they play in time as well as each other's lives

Historia
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.

prescient, chilling & gripping
Revisado: 02-22-25
clearly exhaustively researched, I'm not usually into purely academic audiobooks, however I found myself unable to take a break from the excruciatingly detailed & factual accounts of the authors "scenario" on nuclear weapons/warfare. The contributors she credits for interviews or as factual sources are very impressive & while it's clear the author is presenting her case for the abolition of nuclear weapons, it's also clear that the many high caliber sources & interviewees who help her craft such an engaging, extremely detailed, (thankfully fictional, so far ...) scenario lend her voice & it's narrative an unimpeachable weight. Unpacking her doomsday scenario in the style she does makes it almost like hearing any other fictional audiobook, however the chilling accuracy & detail her account utilizes make for a very compelling statement against nuclear weapons, as well as for a very compelling, engaging listen.
well done

Why is Miami… Miami? What does the heartbreaking fate of the cheetah tell us about the way we raise our children? Why do Ivy League schools care so much about sports? What is the Magic Third, and what does it mean for racial harmony? In this provocative new work, Malcolm Gladwell returns to the subject of social epidemics and tipping points, this time with the aim of explaining the dark side of contagious phenomena. Through a series of gripping stories, Gladwell traces the rise of a new and troubling form of social engineering

thought provoking
Revisado: 11-04-24
A revisiting of the author's original "Tipping Point" book adeptly & at times humorously updated to address sociocultural/socioeconomic concepts in today's world, The book is filled with real life examples, with the stories functioning to prove a point in an easily understood, anecdotal style. I enjoyed the original & found this reimagining of that work a timely, interesting dissection of the many hidden or somewhat unrealized laws governing all people & societies they inhabit.

Historia
The Bobiverse is a different place in the aftermath of the Starfleet War, and the days of the Bobs gathering in one big happy moot are far behind. There’s anti-Bob sentiment on multiple planets, the Skippies playing with an AI time bomb, and multiple Bobs just wanting to get away from it all. But it all pales compared to what Icarus and Daedalus discover on their 26,000-year journey to the center of the galaxy.

Revisado: 09-14-24
I've enjoyed this entire series & this book did not disappoint... like all the other Bobiverse books, the plot, comedy, technically accurate details & commentary on human nature represent the best sci Fi has to offer as genre. They're fun, funny & thought provoking books.
Ray Porter's narration is amazing as usual & I'm already hoping Dennis Taylor gifts his fans with another installment of Bob (and his numerous clones).

Historia
The sun is bloated, diseased, dying perhaps. Beneath its baneful light, Shadrapar, last of all cities, harbours fewer than 100,000 human souls. Built on the ruins of countless civilisations, Shadrapar is a museum, a midden, an asylum, a prison on a world that is ever more alien to humanity. Bearing witness to the desperate struggle for existence between life old and new is Stefan Advani: rebel, outlaw, prisoner, survivor.

A welcomed departure from his other books
Revisado: 05-28-24
I'm admittedly a big fan of the author ... Sci Fi royalty in my opinion. I feel the best works of Sci Fi provide insight or commentary into the human condition or humanity as a whole. In this regard, Cage of Souls didn't disappoint! While a departure from the types of plots & stories I've read of his so far, this was a highly engaging, different take on the typical sci Fi tale. Set at the end of civilization, in a prison I was a bit dubious at 1st, however I blazed thru this book ... A fun, interesting, twist on the usual science fiction story.
The narration is truly top notch (actually was laughing from the portrayal of "The Marshall" character!) & the deeper I got into the story, the deeper it got its hooks in me.
Overall, this was a fabulous listen. Funny, poignant at times & thought provoking, I'd highly recommend it!

Revisado: 04-02-24
Life's most important truths are usually quite simple. My favorite stories draw me in across the entire breadth of their plots & characters... By weaving many essential, yet basic truths of life into each chapter of every volume in this double trilogy, Abercrombie dazzles his audience with one of the best audiobook series I've ever heard...
All the books brim with adventure, unique characters, irreverent humour & enjoyable, complex plots- talented narration gives life the people, places & ideas in each story, making for relatable characters navigating a truly inventive, engaging world.
A tip of my hat in thanks to Joe Abercrombie for the 5 books I've heard so far as I eagerly commence its 6th & final (hopefully not?!) volume of this superb, highly enjoyable series.

Hailed by The New York Times as "a marvel of storytelling", The Things They Carried’s portrayal of the boots-on-the-ground experience of soldiers in the Vietnam War is a landmark in war writing. Now, three-time Emmy Award winner-Bryan Cranston, star of the hit TV series Breaking Bad, delivers an electrifying performance that walks the book’s hallucinatory line between reality and fiction and highlights the emotional power of the spoken word.

Terrifying, haunting, honest, brutal & beautiful.
Revisado: 02-15-24
I've never heard of O'Brien before however I thank the man for writing an honest, beautiful, yet entirely non romanticized account of his experiences during The War in Vietnam...
Not getting hung up on facts as much as truth was an unforeseen & ultimately humbling way to delve into the various experiences described within- beautifully woven together thru a series of sometimes ugly, humorous, irreverent & very poignant stories written with heart tugging, brutal honesty. This book leaves it's impression & Cranston's narration brings life to the heartbreaking power of war to change all who survive it while imparting a powerful message for everyone (one hopes) to take pause before condemning humans to battle.
Was particularly struck by the essays O'Brien reads himself at the conclusion. I carry these stories with me with gratitude to all featured in them & to O'Brien for sharing honest accounts of his experiences of being stuck in, as well as surviving such pervasive, terrible, violence.
