I love Lachman’s books, and actually like Micah Hanks as a reader, but I swear, I have NEVER heard so many mispronounced names and words in one audiobook. C’mon Micah, a little homework, please! You are better than this.

good info but WORST READING EVER

Buy the book.
I worried when I listened to the sample, but against my better judgment, bought it. Tapped out in under 30 minutes. I'm not sure why this reading is SO peculiar. Maybe an AI?

Historia
In TechGnosis - a cult classic now updated and reissued with a new afterword - Erik Davis argues that while the realms of the digital and the spiritual may seem worlds apart, esoteric and religious impulses have in fact always permeated (and sometimes inspired) technological communication. Davis uncovers startling connections between such seemingly disparate topics as electricity and alchemy; online roleplaying games and religious and occult practices; virtual reality and gnostic mythology; programming languages and Kabbalah.

Nobody understands High Weirdness like Erik Davis
Revisado: 08-21-20
This guy is simply the best. Nobody I've read groks the waning days of the 20th century and the twilight of the American Empire like Erik Davis. He breaks down the barriers between philosophy and religion, technology and pop culture and how they work to empower some and oppress the rest.

Historia
Over two grim nights in Los Angeles, the young followers of Charles Manson murdered seven people, including the actress Sharon Tate, then eight months pregnant. With no mercy and seemingly no motive, the Manson Family followed their leader's every order. Twenty years ago, when journalist Tom O'Neill was reporting a magazine piece about the murders, he worried there was nothing new to say. Then he unearthed shocking evidence of a cover-up behind the "official" story, including police carelessness, legal misconduct, and potential surveillance by intelligence agents.

Revisado: 08-21-20
A really good reading of some interesting stuff, along with a lot of random notes. I respect O'Neill's reluctance to over-reach, And the examples of how fringe intel operatives mix with cultural fringes is interesting. Ultimately though, for me it fell short of a satisfying experience.

A Secret History of Consciousness

Historia
For the last four centuries, science has tried to account for everything in terms of atoms and molecules and the physical laws they adhere to. Recently, this effort was extended to try to include the inner world of human beings. Gary Lachman argues that this view of consciousness is misguided and unfounded. He points to another approach to the study and exploration of consciousness that erupted into public awareness in the late 1800s.

SO much fun to listen to!!!
Revisado: 07-17-17
Would you consider the audio edition of Cosmic Trigger I to be better than the print version?
I'm a huge RAW fan, and love this book SO much that it would be tough for me to NOT like the audio book. I reread it every few years, and listening to it is a whole new experience!
What did you like best about this story?
It takes you right into "Chapel Perilous" and transforms your world view starting from page 1.
Have you listened to any of Oliver Senton’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
He does a delightfully bad NY/Philly/Boston/Grouch Marx accent, with British pronunciations. It's a little distracting, but he has so much enthusiasm for the material it is only a minor setback. In the end, probably more fun than a straight read.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
yes! but it's worth savoring and relistening to...
Any additional comments?
loved it.

Historia
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

Good, but not Great
Revisado: 11-09-15
Would you consider the audio edition of Old Man's War to be better than the print version?
No
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Interesting premise, but it never really transcends being a gimmick.
Have you listened to any of William Dufris’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not listened to a Dufris reading before- It takes a little getting used to, but his character voices do add to the story once you get into the flow.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Not really.
Any additional comments?
As big of a deal as Scalzi is, I expected a little more than Starship Troopers warmed over, and although it was a fun listen, ultimately this is pretty formula stuff. Good for what it is, though.

Historia
An icon of the environmental movement outlines a provocative approach for reclaiming our planet. According to Stewart Brand, a lifelong environmentalist who sees everything in terms of solvable design problems, three profound transformations are under way on Earth right now. Climate change is real and is pushing us toward managing the planet as a whole. Urbanization - half the world's population now lives in cities, and 80 percent will by midcentury - is altering humanity's land impact and wealth.

The moral ambiguity of a of techno-fetishist
Revisado: 08-15-15
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Sure
If you’ve listened to books by Stewart Brand before, how does this one compare?
I've read a lot of Brand- this is well written and well read.
Which scene was your favorite?
The section on shanty towns.
Do you think Whole Earth Discipline needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
As with all futurists, Brand bats about 500. Half of this book is getting more relevant and half is getting less relevant as years pass.
Any additional comments?
If you are a traditional anti-nuke, anti-GMO enviro, this book will really piss you off.
