When I first read The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo, I knew I was hooked. It was hands down one of the best thrillers I ever read. I couldn’t get enough of it and enjoyed beautiful sequels in storytelling and character unveiling, sub plots and the unexpected and turns and twists. The audible book review of The girl in Eagle’s Talons does a better job summarizing the plot that the author did. Stieg Larson left big shoes to fill, he remains the master unbeatable in his craft of writing like a journalist yet gripping like a novelist. His writing was crisp, no words or superfluous descriptions of what was unnecessary. He made us fall in love with the characters so much that even after his own untimely death we are all here still reading the sequels written by other writers. This could have been a much better book. I don’t mind the addition of Svala and the other characters, and can see their role in the following 2-3 books if this makes it far enough. I would love to see the author take more guidance from Stieg’s books and his partner, Eva Gabrielsson. She is the missing link and the editor/guide both Karin and David needed to continue the journey Stieg started. I wanted more, expected deeper involvement of Mikael and Lisbeth (obviously)… too much time was spent on characters who may not have have the future in the series and meticulous preparation Mikael and Lisbeth were known for could have been far better developed.

Don’t get the story plot/line. I loved Manhattan Beach, but this was something else. May be reading the Goon squad?

For many of us, taking responsibility and working hard is expected; but success doesn’t come just from working hard, accepting responsibility and worrying about everything around you. In Success Under Stress, Ms. Melnick provides simple yet effective tools for dealing with stress in seemingly unwindable situations at work and in your personal life.

Evidence-based techniques from Ms. Melnick’s years of research at Harvard medical school, coupled with alternative medicine and quick meditation rituals, gave me a holistic view on how to deal with a variety of challenges in my life with a very prescriptive and individualized advice.

I’ve read a variety of development books on leadership and success. The most useful ones, for me, are those books you read, taking notes and writing down the source names to learn more on the subject. Success Under Stress had me notating every chapter. And now that I finished this audio book, I am compelled to buy a print version as well.

Throughout the book I made bookmarks and wrote down key advice from Ms Melnick (Audible makes it easy to bookmark and go back on a variety of topics + write notes on specific audio segments). From acupressure triggers to defuse your anxiety; to a table that helps you drill down to why certain people do things and how to react to their actions with empathy and better understanding of other motivations and concerns.

I finish this review by paraphrasing, what I found to be at the heart of Ms. Melnick’s message. Be impeccable for the things you can control, “your 50%”. Understand that motivating others isn’t a one-size-fits-all proposition and requires patience and empathy. Dealing with impossibly difficult boss, who screams at you on regular basis, can teach you more about yourself and how to better adopt to this difficult relationship. Finally, not all fights are worth fighting. Walking away when you know you did what you could, impeccably, gives you no regrets to pursue change and positive vibes for your future.

Happy listening! Find out how you want to be recognized and work on focusing and prioritizing tasks that will help you reach your goals.

The truth about the US healthcare system

I read this book after completing Wendell Potter’s “Deadly Spin.” Having personal opinions on the health insurance industry as an insider, a member, and a patient, this book was full of revelations I didn't know about. In lieu of Trump’s administration recent decision to abandon any support for the ACA law, this book brilliantly captures the ills of the current system that is set up to fail the American people.

We’re capitalists. I’m not in favor of the the government taking over health care industry completely. However, having the business ran a mock, fueled by greed, unchallenged practices that reinforce more unconscious behavior is failing us in every way.

We love to blame the insurance companies and the big pharma companies, without realizing that there are others, aka the device manufacturers, physicians, hospitals and laboratories, who are just as guilty of playing the same game. Catering to owners, investors, shareholders and not the patients, employers or members.

Yes, we have reached unimaginable heights with the technology and research on cancer, diabetes, HIV and preventive screenings. The problem, however, is that we believe that innovation and growth in health care are only motivated by financial incentives. Many of the vaccines, procedures and medical devices were manufactured by people who receive no profit from their discoveries. Even the insurance concept, started by forefathers of BCBS had the motivation to help people first and foremost.

Many of our drugs are just reformulated to keep patents and $$ in place. Not all medical procedures are necessary and some are actually harmful, especially end of life decisions.

Just like the climate change debate, it’s not about siding with republicans or democrats. It’s about ethics and sustainability. How long are we going to be able to continue bankrupting families, watch the mortality rate of pregnant women and babies go up every year? How much money is enough for one CEO, when people who worked for him/her can’t afford basic care and only seek treatment when their situation is dire and more expensive?

The capitalist system is critical for individuals to have the ability to achieve the greatest heights they can achieve. The free market will always reward the most innovative products, the most qualified scientists. But we must level the playing field. Too much money, paying for political favors, going back and forth is not a definition of a free market. It’s a true sign that the system is rigged and the ones with the most money always win.

Time to get back to basics. The healthcare system must have its objectives redefined. First, it must do no harm. Second, it must be a right, not a privilege. And, third, it must be regulated to ensure that 1 and 2 stay true.

If you think you know about healthcare, Public relations and the fate of journalism, think again. Thought provoking book about big corporations running our country and our democracy in peril from big business lobbyists, greed, misinformation campaigns and lack of proper education to vet the truth from fiction.

As usual, Michael Lewis nails the issues right on its head. If you were impressed by Money Ball or Big Short, this book won’t disappoint... but you will be more terrified of what’s happening to our government today. We all know that lobbyists play a large role in many policy decisions in Washington, but until now, both political parties put in place people in charge who understood what the government does and how important it’s role is. Michael focuses on Department of Commerce and you will be aghast to learn who is in charge and how little does the current administration care about science, data, and facts. I’m sure many of you will say, dohhhh we know that already, but the impact of keeping this administration in the office is just short of one more preventable disaster.

Atul Gawande’s book had a truly transformative effect on my thinking about life, mortality and the quest of western medicine to cure or at least treat all ills and prolong life at all costs. While I’m not ready to decide how I want to die and would rather not think about it from all perspectives, Being Mortal gave me the tools to consider before making these difficult decisions. It’s never going to be easy or unemotional, but there’s a path to figuring out how to get where you or your loved ones ultimately want to end up. As a mother, wife and daughter, I always thought that prolonging life at all costs, trying radical and new innovative procedures will always be my go to... now I’m not so sure. The key is in having a conversation and understanding the stakes. Read this book, it’s invaluable for doctors, patients and families who are going through hard times or those who, like me, constantly worry about what’s next.

Just finished listening to Michelle Obama’s book and wanted to sit down and take a breath. I always looked up to Michelle and love what she did and what she stood for. This book is a very intimate and compelling story of a woman who continues to live life to the fullest with high regard and care for others. If you loved Michelle and was already her fan, this book will make you cry and inspire you to do things you didn’t think you should or could. I certainly feel more hopeful and confident that we all have the power to be the best we can be in all of us. Hard work, empathy and passion gets you places in our beautiful and complex country.

If you didn’t like Michelle, I believe you should listen or read her book because you will learn how much different she is from the media profile. She is a woman, a mother, a wife and a daughter. Her love for people transcends politics and empty rhetoric. She is honest and open and as authentic as we want our leaders to be. She is my idol and role model. I hope you give her a chance.
