Set in rural southern Ohio and West Virginia, The Devil All the Time follows a cast of compelling and bizarre characters from the end of World War II to the 1960s. There’s Willard Russell, tormented veteran of the carnage in the South Pacific, who can’t save his beautiful wife, Charlotte, from an agonizing death by cancer no matter how much sacrificial blood he pours on his “prayer log.”

Disturbing, but sonwell written
Revisado: 03-13-25
Really enjoyed this book. I had no idea what to expect, and it was pretty disturbing in some aspects. For example, I can't get the prayer log sequences out of my head and also that crazy husband and wife couple! Yikes! It was very well written, and the movie was pretty good, but the book was much more moving. Good narration, a little flat sometimes, but characters voices were well done.

It's ok
Revisado: 02-16-25
I've read several Mark Edwards books and have liked some much more than others. He's fun for an easy, fast read with decent twists and turns. This one is ok, not great. Narration was great.

Historia
It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself.

Dark academia indeed
Revisado: 01-04-25
Really good, a little too long as some of it dragged in parts and didn't add to the story, but overall I really liked it. I had no idea what to expect nor anything about it but I liked The Goldfinch, which gets mixed reviews, as does this, so I figured it was worth a shot. I still think about it months later and it's one I won't forget. Narration is just ok, often annoying but wasn't ruinous like some.

Decent book, good stories
Revisado: 07-18-24
I listened to this after Our Share of Night by the same author (loved that one!!). it was fun to hear some of the same character names again, albeit very different stories (except one was familiar with a different take). They are creepy and interesting. The narrator is very good, although she often sounded a bit like a cartoon character to me, but I got used to it. I'd recommend if you like creepy.

Historia
In this first novel, we are introduced to suave, handsome Tom Ripley: a young striver, newly arrived in the heady world of Manhattan in the 1950s. A product of a broken home, branded a "sissy" by his dismissive Aunt Dottie, Ripley becomes enamored of the moneyed world of his new friend, Dickie Greenleaf. This fondness turns obsessive when Ripley is sent to Italy to bring back his libertine pal, but he grows enraged by Dickie's ambivalent feelings for Marge, a charming American dilettante.

Crazy, scary, interesting long ride
Revisado: 07-03-24
I really liked this book. it was scary, heartbreaking, interesting, weird, creepy, and just a really good story overall. Yes, it could've been a bit shorter and some parts weren't really necessary, but I'm still creeped out by some of the visuals. I also learned some history, which was interesting (and sad). I really liked the characters, even the loathsome ones (I mean, not every character need be likeable!) and the writing and the narration. I also wish the ending didn't happen so quickly; it felt really rushed after all the time leading up to it, but it was a decent ending overall. I read when I had time but mostly listened and enjoyed both. It's definitely not a book for everyone.

Lovely, Thought Provoking, LOVED Iy
Revisado: 08-17-22
Great story, well-written, beautifully narrated, couldn't stop listening, loved the characters, incites much contemplation, learned a lot about the perspective of someone unable to care for themselves and how a quadriplegic (or others) battle with related health risks and points of view on life. I've seen so many recommendations for this book in my on line book groups and finally picked it up. No regrets at all. Loved it.
