Historia
In 1942, America's deadliest fighter pilot, or "ace of aces" - the legendary Eddie Rickenbacker - offered a bottle of bourbon to the first US fighter pilot to break his record of 26 enemy planes shot down. Seizing on the challenge to motivate his men, General George Kenney promoted what they would come to call the "race of aces" as a way of boosting the spirits of his war-weary command.

A must if flying is in the blood
Revisado: 05-05-20
Having listened to many WWII flying type books, I purchased this anticipating the same. And although the stories are indeed worthy, the presentation is lacking, both in story and presentation. Still not sorry for the purchase, I wish there were more in it's presentation.

Captain Eddie V. Rickenbacker, originally from Ohio, was best known as one of the commanders of the 94th "Hat-in-the-Ring" Squadron, a crack unit of World War I pilots that included many former members of the famed Lafayette Escadrille. The 94th ended the war in France with the highest number of air victories of any American squadron.

An American Hero's early story
Revisado: 12-22-19
Rickenbacker was a larger than life character that I had heard of, but knew little about. This book delves into the man, and his passion from an early age.
Having a love of aviation, I marvel at the accomplishments and innovations this man has achieved. The advancement of aeronautics has a great deal to credit to this amazing individual
A great read, especially for someone with interest in early aviation, and early military strategy. I loved it!

Islands, Oceans, and Dreams is a true story of a man who, at the age of 33, began dreaming of voyaging with his wife to the South Pacific. He wasn't an adventurer or daring by nature, but he bought a boat and began learning the ways of the sea. Twenty years later, racked with the pain of divorce and still aching to live out his dream, he set off alone for Tahiti. After reaching French Polynesia, he continued cruising for seven years and wound up solo sailing around the world. Islands, Oceans, and Dreams takes the listener on that voyage.

Overcoming one self, at the MAX
Revisado: 12-22-19
The author is, for his life at least, at the right time / place for this to occur. Most of us simply cannot, and would not make the same decisions given the same life occurrences.
Yet, to those who imagine, and secretly long to endeavor such a journey, the story is captivating.
Long, yet not boring. This book takes you through 7 years of solo navigation on a modest sailing yacht. There once may have been a time for me, but such time has lapsed. I am only left with the wonder of what could have been...

I believe there is a gap in generation with this
Revisado: 12-22-19
I found this book to be absurd. Total garbage IMHO. I suppose my age compared to the author has some bearing.
I would suggest anyone interested in gaining wealth seek out and study people like Robert Kiyosaki.
The FU lines suggest and follow a mindset that I do not resonate with. Again, my age and background are greatly influencing my opinion, but I believe this book totally SUCKS and should be avoided by all. There is so much better material out there, even for today's millennials that there is no room for the likes of this dribble.

Historia
In 1914, the war which was to have been wrapped up by Christmas had - in reality - only just begun, as all sides entrenched themselves deeper into the Great War. Christmas Eve, 1914 follows one company of British officers as they rotate forward to spend their Christmas on the front lines, a mere 80 yards from the German guns. Upper- and working-class men and boys are thrown together into one trench and struggle to survive.

For a brief moment in time, we bonded.
Revisado: 12-22-19
Such history is difficult to imagine, especially the hardship and suffering these men were made to endure. This special time in the middle of war, provides hope for humanity, if only for a brief period.
I wonder if after the wars end, any of these people had opportunity to reunite with one another?
A great read, tugs at the heart strings. All at Christmas, a universal understanding between both sides. A common ground...

Historia
Benjamin Franklin is the founding father who winks at us - an ambitious urban entrepreneur who rose up the social ladder, from leather-aproned shopkeeper to dining with kings. In best-selling author Walter Isaacson's vivid and witty full-scale biography, we discover why Franklin turns to us from history's stage with eyes that twinkle from behind his new-fangled spectacles. In Benjamin Franklin, Isaacson shows how Franklin defines both his own time and ours. The most interesting thing that Franklin invented, and continually reinvented, was himself.

A deep look into Franklin's character.
Revisado: 12-22-19
We have all heard the quotes, and many inventive stories of this great man. But this book dives much, much deeper into the pre, during and after of Franklin's life and times. He was, in the right place, at the right time in history.
In providing such a level of information, the book does have it's dull moments. But trudging through them adds to the overall admiration of this great individual.
Anyone seeking an insight into the thoughts of founding fathers during their life period will enjoy this bio. The detail is incredible and provides insight as to how he processed decisions that ultimately lead to his signing the proclamation.

Historia
Four days before Christmas in 1943, a badly damaged American bomber struggled to fly over wartime Germany. At its controls was a 21-year-old pilot. Half his crew lay wounded or dead. It was their first mission. Suddenly a sleek, dark shape pulled up on the bomber’s tail - a German Messerschmitt fighter. Worse, the German pilot was an ace, a man able to destroy the American bomber with the squeeze of a trigger.

Fantastic story of compassion and honor
Revisado: 12-22-19
Being a WWII buff, especially all things aviation, I cant believe I waited so long to 'read' this book! Fantastic Non Fiction at it's best. Story of compassion over an enemy's helpless foe, and the compassion shown them is heart warming, especially considering the times and circumstances.
I highly recommend this book to anyone inclined as I am. The story has had me listening beyond my regular travel time. I cant get enough and hate to see this book end!

Historia
There’s more to the swamplands than meets the teeth. In this supernatural tale of magic and mysticism, Henry Lemarchand grew up in Philadelphia knowing very little of his family—his father disappeared when he was young, leaving behind only a strange pouch of animal teeth. When he is sent to the Louisiana bayou to spend the summer with his eccentric uncle and cousin in their decaying ancestral mansion, Henry learns about his family’s supernatural legacy.

Old non fiction guy enjoying this
Revisado: 12-13-19
Preface; I'm an old guy mostly into WWII and other war stuff. And other non fiction, mostly history.
I had a lull in listening to books for a month or so, and responded to an email suggesting these free titles. So I clicked.
I listened to several samples before settling on this one. And I'm glad I chose it!
This story is very well told, and the story line is unlike any other supernatural fiction I can recall. A nice twist all around. The beginning sets the stage well, and quickly progresses into the meat and potatoes. The set stage, and exciting adventure are well scripted and held my interest. The story moved along at a brisk pace without dull, or boring periods.
The only complaint I have is in it's ending. After the climax 'scene', the return to 'normal' happened too quickly. There should have been more immediate aftermath in the story. An annoyance, but still glad I listened to it.

Our Moon Missions Back Story
Revisado: 10-16-18
I love how each mission begins with an introduction of the astronauts and their personal lives. The depth of the back story is fantastic and I really enjoyed the detail. I was raised watching the missions as they happened. Still cant believe we haven't been back.
