Meticulously research, carefully crafted story of a mulatto of the New World whose intelligence, elegance, and courage promote him to a leader of the Revolution who later led Napoleon's troops into Egypt.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Black Count?

REailzing that the Count and Three Musketeers were modeled on this man.

What does Paul Michael bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Dumas's character as well as his derring do

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

A fine man in all regards who fought racism even in France, which prided itself on equality for all--except blacks.

I expected a scholarly retelling of the Iliad, not a Barbara Cartland set in Homeric Greece.

What did you like best about The Round House? What did you like least?

I quit listening almost 3/4 through because I remained unconnected to characters and uninvolved in plot. Narration flat. Perhaps this was a conscious choice to remain consistent with American Indian minimal inflection.

Would you be willing to try another book from Louise Erdrich? Why or why not?

I think I've read all her work, but not of this book.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Gary Farmer?

Perhaps George Guidall.

You never know when you'll be called upon to build a long bow; vital to selection the propre yew.

Both sides' insistence that god rode with their troops

If you could take any character from Agincourt out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Fictional characters quite cardboard, the romance trite. None of the mattered however in the rantings of royalty and the mute sufferance of soldiers.
