Historia
Author Vitale Buford spent nearly three decades of her life in the web of perfection. She was praised for being an "easy child", "pretty", and "self-motivated", so that's what she tried to be. Her need for perfection and outside success was coupled with her body-image obsession. It was also a distraction from the pain of abandonment and loneliness she experienced in her childhood. When she tied her self-worth to her external success and her appearance, her addiction to perfection was born.

wow so many layers
Revisado: 09-07-21
I knew nothing about Adderall before reading this book and have learned a lot. Vitale's story is a good one and I'm sure there are many who are in constant need of perfection and who can relate to her struggles. there were several times I wanted to reach through the book and just shake her though - with her decisions around men - but I understand it was related to her misguided sense of self worth, rooted in her upbringing. good book.

Historia
A shy, bookish college graduate from a solid middle-class home, Kate Holden was uncertain of her way in life. When she decided to try her first hit of heroin, she did not anticipate that the drug would take over. Desperation drove her first to offer her body on the streets and then in high-class brothels, where she discovered hidden strengths as well as parts of herself that frightened her. With the acceptance and unyielding love of a family that never abandoned her, Kate Holden ultimately defeated the drug and left her netherworld behind.

Unexpected
Revisado: 08-31-21
I expected this book to be more about Kate's addiction but about half way through it focused almost entirely on prostitution. I was still interested to listen because I know so little about the industry, but it just wasn't what I expected.
Kate has a completely unapologetic way of describing her journey through addiction and prostitution. I actually found it quite refreshing - she makes no excuses for herself or her actions (in contrast to other memoirs I've read about addiction). She just owns it.

Wanted to shake Nic and hug him at the same time
Revisado: 08-23-21
I'm pretty sure the narrator is different here from Nic's first memoir, which I felt was a strange move. It definitely took me a few chapters to connect with him.
I love the way Nic writes - very casual, as if he's just speaking to you. His story made me so frustrated with him at times for his decisions, and so annoyed with his obvious lack of accountability for his own actions. Stop blaming other people or situations for your decisions! But at the same time, I was 100% in his corner, rooting for him all the way.
Nic has a great story to share and I'm glad I read it (listened to it).

When Rick Van Warner found himself searching abandoned buildings and dangerous streets looking for his missing son, he had no idea that the synthetic, pill-form heroin that had snared his teen was already killing so many. In the years of pain and heartache that followed, as he tried to save his son from opioid addiction, Van Warner discovered what the American public is just now becoming aware of: Opioids prescribed for even minor pain relief are so addictive that even a few days of use can create dependency.

I wish I could give this 5 stars
Revisado: 05-19-21
I so wish I could give this book 5 stars, because the subject matter is very interesting to me. the book almost lost me in the very beginning because it kicked off by giving the reader a bunch of facts about drug addiction. unless you're writing a research paper, that's not the best way to grab a reader's attention. but I stuck with it and I'm glad I did. the author's story is gut wrenching at times. as the reader, you really feel for him, his son and their whole family. The other reason for the 4 star rating is the narrator. his voice is pretty dry. I wish the author himself would have narrated, but if that wasn't an option then I with they had found someone with more emotion in their voice and reading style.

I wrote this book because when I turned 41 I made a decision to be brave. To live brave - bolder and freer. You see, I thought our lives were supposed to change when we turned 40...but mine didn't. Yet every piece of it changed when I turned 41, when I set out to prove that it wasn't too late for me, that careless words wouldn't stunt me and rejection would not stop me. And maybe, just maybe, it will take you reading about the journey I took to finding my sense of self-worth in order for you to rightfully believe in yours.
