story is decent, but sophomoric philosophy
Revisado: 08-18-23
I started listening to this trilogy based on good experience with both the author and the narrator. but honestly I was kinda disappointed and it felt like Scott Brick was phoning it in.
while I enjoyed the story and characters, I had a hard time finishing the trilogy. I was not impressed vs much of what I've read/listened to from Kevin J Anderson.
The religions that provide the cultural framework for the two primary nations come off as extremely contrived. the philosophical discourse of the characters about the religions is sophomoric at best.
"All religions are the same"
"Religion is the cause of all violence and atrocities"
"why can't religions get along"
"if you would just compromise..."
the conclusion is basically just one big "COEXIST" bumper sticker.

Historia
The gods, makers of worlds, seek to create balance—between matter and energy; and between mortals who strive toward the transcendent, and the natural perils they must tame or overcome. But one of the gods fashions a world filled with hellish creatures far too powerful to allow balance; he is condemned to live for eternity with his most hateful creations in that world's distant Bourne, restrained by a magical veil kept vital by the power of song.

disappointed
Revisado: 12-08-21
I picked up this audio book after hearing the author's concept in one of the "Unfettered" short story collection. The short story was well written and well told. but this is a slog. I'm a 3rd of the way thru and I don't think I'll bother to finish.
Both the writing and narration feel forced. Like the author and narrator we're going for a Michael Bay Transformers movie.

Historia
In this book, which the author calls a "culmination of 30 years of work in the history of ideas", Sowell attempts to explain the ideological difference between liberals and conservatives as a disagreement over the moral potential inherent in nature. Those who see that potential as limited prefer to constrain governmental authority, he argues. They feel that reform is difficult and often dangerous, and put their faith in family, custom, law, and traditional institutions.

Mandatory reading for anyone getting political
Revisado: 04-07-21
Published in 1987 and still wonderfully applicable and enlightening of modern politics and social ideologies. It really helps to understand that just because you and I might come to different conclusions, or support wildly different approaches towards the same problem, it doesn't mean that one of us is an altruist and the other is a fascist. It means that we understand the world and human nature, potential and limitations in different ways. Sowell doesn't try to swing you over to his vision of the world, rather, he's helping you to understand those who see form the other vision. I honestly think that is more people read this book and really understood the implications, American, heck global politics would drastically improve. Hot heads would cool.

Some great, others...
Revisado: 05-22-20
Interesting concept. Most of the stories were interesting, fun, and or witty. A couple were heart wrenching. And a couple had great twists. Most of the authors respected the works they were "ripping off" but one clearly had minimal familiarity with the source and seems to mistake abuse for humor.

Engaging story weighed down by campy performance
Revisado: 10-23-18
I decided to try "Ship of Magic" because I really enjoyed the Assassin's Apprentice trilogy, especially the unique approach to magic, and how it affected the protagonists perceptions. So far the story is pretty good, but the narrator feels like a novice of campfire ghost stories. Every other line feels like she's holding a flashlight under her chin. Especially when delivering a male character's dialogue. Her narration flow best and most naturally while narrating the actions of Althea Vestrit. That doesn't mean it's good, it's just less bad. He delivery of Kennit's dialogue sounds like she's expecting a 6 yearold to go skittering under a blanket with every sentence.

The first book of best-selling sci-fi author Jack Campbell’s new series Beyond the Frontier returns to find Captain John “Black Jack" Geary, the hero of the Lost Fleet series, awoken from cryogenic sleep to take command of the fleet. Geary’s legendary exploits have earned him the adoration of the people—and the enmity of politicians convinced that a living hero can be a very inconvenient thing.

Love the story and the performance
Revisado: 10-23-18
Great space story, and the narrator does an excellent job presenting unique voices that can be easily identified without needing to be told who is talking. I really enjoy the use of realistic physics to describe maneuvers, the thought out mechanics of navigation. The only criticism I would have is that Geary seems a bit too adept at handling political traps.
