Intrigued in the story beginning, interested in the characters, enjoyed the voice acting. But I have no idea how others can listen to the audio feedback sound used repeatedly and loudly (often reaching levels higher than voices and sound effects) for intro, transitions, communication-issues, more transitions, “something weird is going on,” and outro. Made it just after the missing people scene because I didn’t want to distract myself from raining rush-hour to fiddle with it. Finally turned it off because the sound itself was distracting my driving. Took migraine meds and hid under a pillow when I got home.

Do not listen if you dislike high-pitched sounds or if audio feedback causes physical flinch reactions. May also mix poorly with tinnitus.

Like the characters, enjoying the stories, and the voice actor is excellent. Only issue - the word “soccer” has no place in any of these stories.

Good, rollicking fun, just the right amount of over-the-top camp and dramatic tension. Looking forward to see where it goes next!

I’m enjoying the series so far and plan to finish it. The interplay of patterns, symbols and being are interesting, and I’m enjoying them. I wasn’t a huge fan of a couple of characters undevelopment, but it fits the theme and I have hope it will turn around in book 3.

Well-written, interesting characters. The pace feels slow but I think mostly because the story wanders several different places. The end comes together a bit abruptly but it fits. Looking forward to the next!

I enjoyed the story and the characters. About as well written as the others, plot is satisfying and sets up future stories well. I’m glad I finished the book and plan to continue with the Watcher Chronicles.

However, I very nearly quit listening when the main character punished someone she says she loves for being publicly sexually assaulted, with evidence that he resisted used as justification to grow angrier at him. Paired with the trope of “please stop crying, you know how much it hurts me,” it took me a while to come back to finish the story itself. Nobody needs that kind of relationship toxicity encouraged in their fantasy romance, and it really highlighted how out-of-touch with *his* emotional needs the narrator was. The zero-to-ten-thousand sex-shaming that previous books hinted but didn’t devolve into furthered the feeling and leaves me concerned. If any other books treat sexuality the way this book did, I will drop the series without a backward glance.

So enjoy, but proceed with caution because WOW that went bad places.

I’m enjoying the discussion of how real world technology works, developed, and changed military everything.

I’m enjoying the main characters a lot. And the story of the war, and the exploration of humanity and what makes a person - however shallow compared to other, harder sci-if.

I wish the bad guys had more depth to them. Weber has demonstrated the ability to make even opposing leaders sympathetic in other series. It’s sadly lacking here, with only two exceptions, and one of them hinted as only staying a bad guy out of fear for his family.

And when you’ve modeled everything after Christianity, whatever verbal nod you claim to pulling from “many faiths…” The wars where the church invades, burns, rapes, tortures and “reclaims” people who aren’t Church enough? Perfectly good word that fits the culture you’re modeling. It’s called a Crusade.

Given the whole point of the conflict in this book, pulling from another religion only for the bad? Super hypocritical.

But still enjoying the series, and plan to move forward! Even the author’s hypocrisy plays into some of the cultural discussion, even if it pulls me out of the story into more meta-considerations.

I love the way the world is developed and our introduction to its fantasy elements is handled. There are some fantastic fey-bargain moments throughout the story that shape the way character interactions and magic in general work that also manage to feel like things that would happen with people new to chunks of it. The fantasy setting pleases me immensely. The only reason I’m about to spend more words on relationships is because what it sets up well is complicated.

I’m really easily irritated by characters who make too-stupid-to-live mistakes and women protagonists who make their way forward in the world by stomping a foot and yelling. And the early interactions between the main characters could have fallen there easily.

But Cook manages to walk a line where miscommmunication and temper facilitate a story while still feeling real and human rather than contrived and childish. (Sometimes childish, but in the way real 18-22 year-olds can be as they develop into mature adults.) I had a few moments when I grew frustrated by each character in their respective ugh moments, but then they acknowledged them and… got better! The relationship that developed felt realistically human. It’s a hard balance to strike and I am over-the-moon thrilled with Cook’s storytelling and how that piece aligns with the flow of the story as a whole.

And oh, the communication is perfect in the end. Chef’s kiss for the book’s ending, and super excited to see where it goes from here!

I kept waiting for the main character to ever stop swinging wildly with her emotions and start learning from previous experiences, but this is the point in the series a portrayal of the Romani that has led to their persecution came fully into play. The fourth or fifth slur in, I gave up and will not be continuing.

This series is beyond immature even for young adult and every relationship has been a miserable mental health example. I hope nobody comes out of these books dreaming of anything like these relationships or characters.

I enjoyed this story immensely from the beginning. Random scattering of alliteration, delicious snark, and generally entertaining satire characters with just the right flair of humanity.

The second or third completely despicable female villain - without the flair of humanity male villains were granted - up to and including false rape allegations, however, pushed beyond satire into generating emotional responses of disdain, disgust and distrust that reinforce rather than undermine harmful elements of society.

First book in a long, LONG time that I enjoyed quite a bit to start but will not be finishing.
