good information broken down by decade, but would love an updated version. for example, he talks about the euro currency as something on the horizon.

outdated
Revisado: 06-27-23
The book is good.... however, it is very outdated at this point and repetative. He goes out off his way to ignore nuclear as a viable alternative. Even with these negatives, it still presents the arguments in a solid economical perspective.

Historia
War Is a Racket is Marine General Smedley Butler's classic treatise on why wars are conducted, who profits from them, and who pays the price. Few people are as qualified as General Butler to advance the argument encapsulated in his book's sensational title. When War Is a Racket was first published in 1935, Butler was the most decorated American soldier of his time. Despite his success and his heroic status, Butler came away from his military experiences with a deeply troubled view of both the purpose and the results of warfare.

Horrible argument
Revisado: 05-17-23
Wow, what a terrible argument.
It is completely one sided ignoring all other factors.
For instance, he argues that the only reason America was in WWI was for profit, ignoring minor things like the sinking of our merchant ships by U boats, the Zimmerman letter, etc.
His argument is also solely from the American side as a nation that has not suffered serious financial loses since the Civil War, but he is claiming it as a universal. I'm sure the German people after WWI would have a different opinion of war and "profits".
His arguments that simply because groups like the League of Nations and United Nations weren't 100% successful that they WANTED to fail.
This is one of the shallowest arguments I have ever read... don't waste your time.

Historia
Do the lessons passed down to us by history, lessons whose origins may lie hundreds, even thousands of years in the past, still have value for us today? Is Santayana's oft-repeated saying, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it," merely a way to offer lip service to history as a teacher-or can we indeed learn from it? And if we can, what is it that we should be learning?

full of biases
Revisado: 04-23-23
wow, just wow.
so where to start?
how about the authors single minded perspective of history of the great man theory that all if history is only due to single great people... ignoring things like the black death or culture ideals.
then he judges every historical event event from today's view along how they could be so dumb to make that mistake.
he gives credit for one trait as a good thing in one leader as a negative in another both as individuals and nations.
i could go on, but i think i have made my point.

Touched off by a terrorist act in Bosnia and spreading all too quickly beyond the expectations of those who were involved, World War I was an unprecedented catastrophe with a ghastly cost. After this first "total war"-the first conflict involving entire societies mobilized to wage unrestrained war, devoting all their wealth, industries, institutions, and the lives of their citizens to win victory at any price - the world itself would never be the same.

Too many visual references for an audio book
Revisado: 04-17-23
As my review title suggests, the author makes multiple references to charts and equations that make it hard to follow along in an audio book.
It is also very basic information which is great if you do not have this knowledge, but other audio books do a better job at this overview.
