One thousand miles from home. To get back to Fort Doom, he'll lead a ragtag crew across a cruel and forgotten country. Fun Post-Apocalypse Adventure -- Until the End
Revisado: 08-11-24
The humor and clever storyline of this series are top notch. And the end is the most huge downer you could ever imagine.

Historia
NASA is about to launch Apollo 18. While the mission has been billed as a scientific one, flight controller Kazimieras "Kaz" Zemeckis knows there is a darker objective. Intelligence has discovered a secret Soviet space station spying on America, and Apollo 18 may be the only chance to stop it. But as Kaz races to keep the NASA crew one step ahead of their Russian rivals, a deadly accident reveals that not everyone involved is who they were thought to be. With political stakes stretched to the breaking point, the White House and the Kremlin can only watch as their astronauts collide.

Well plotted Alt History of the Space Program
Revisado: 02-05-23
Apollo Murders nestles well into the history of the end of the Apollo program. His knowledge of space operations and history comes through and makes for a credible drama. At times, he builds in extensive scientific explanations which I feel help to build suspense by stretching certain moments out. Some might find it annoying though.

Historia
They were the Savages. Raiders from our distant past. Elites who left Earth to create tailor-made utopias aboard the massive lighthuggers that crawled through the darkness between the stars. But the people they left behind on a dying planet didn't perish in the dystopian nightmare the Savages had themselves created: they thrived, discovering faster-than-light technology and using it to colonize the galaxy ahead of the Savages, forming fantastic new civilizations that surpassed the wildest dreams of Old Earth.

Surprisingly Good Writing... and Anachronistic
Revisado: 07-13-22
Cole and Anspach put together an engaging story using the tried and true "bug hunt" model. The story is action-packed and clearly well-researched (from an early 21st Century point-of-view) but the pacing is not hurried. Lang is an excellent reader, if a bit slow-paced. His character voices are distinct without being distracting. On the irritating side, all the main combatants but one are gruff male stereotypes. It's as if the US Army and Marines of the late 20th Century (before integration of women into combat roles) had been transported into the far future. It's pretty sexist, to be honest. If it wasn't for that, this would be a solid 5 stars.

Historia
Set in present-day Los Angeles, Junk explores an epic conspiracy, one at work for thousands of years that involves total takeover of the planet Earth by aliens. In the wild, souped-up vision of Les Bohem - the acclaimed, Emmy-winning writer of the Steven Spielberg miniseries, Taken - the world is at the end stage of long-range plot that involves a gigantic genetic-engineering project. The aliens who have invaded us have no planet. No spaceship is coming. Instead, a small advance force comes, breeds, and dies - thus becoming an anomaly in our DNA that can’t be explained.

I have a concept, the idea of our junk DNA being the seeds of an alien invasion planted thousands of years ago. but it works, and the story moves quickly. I can't decide if I like Waters as a narrator or not as the whole production seems to have a little bit of a "what the f***" vibe to it. but it kind of works

Jill Sherer Murray stayed in a dead-end relationship into her forties before she finally let it go. She was like millions of women who struggle with whether to stay in a bad relationship, or give up on love altogether, believing it isn’t in the cards. You may be grappling with a similar decision, terrified of being single but feeling like you’re not living the life you want.

Practical, Powerful... and Gender-Specific
Revisado: 02-11-22
I first heard of "Big Wild Love" in a podcast for people going through or approaching divorce. I am in that group. So, the idea of learning how to strategically let go of beliefs and relationships that did not serve really resonated with me. I eagerly bought the audiobook and e-book. As hoped for, l Sherer-Murray offered moving examples from her own life and others about why it is vital to Let Go regularly. What seemed less clear was how to navigate through feelings of rejection and resentment in the process.
It was also hard to hear every example coming from a female, almost entirely heterosexual perspective. In the process, it took a lot of energy not to personalize the issues needing to be let go of as problems of gender and not of humanity. The book would rate a 5/5 if the author broadened her message to be more welcoming and took into account the complex emotions associated with letting go in the face of contention.

McAulty packs a lot of thoughtful ideas about technology, politics and what it means to be human into a somewhat long adventure story. His world-building is impressive without being overbearing. Winton's delivery is solid-- energetic without being overbearing.

The Reef and the Network
Revisado: 10-17-21
Johnson provides some powerful insights into how organizations and societies can harness the power of information flows to increase innovation, and not just for technology. He uses many thoughtful stories (which always helps me understand) yet takes care not to extrapolate too much or cherry pick. The challenge I see is applying these big ideas at the micro level.
Singer as a reader is articulate, uses good tone variation and varied pacing. I would have rated his reading a 5 except for one thing: ACCENTS! He actually does some decent imitations of an English accent, or German-speaking English accent, or a French-speaking English accent. But these accents are totally out of place and distracting in a work of non-fiction.

Historia
S.T., a domesticated crow, is a bird of simple pleasures: hanging out with his owner Big Jim, trading insults with Seattle's wild crows (i.e. "those idiots"), and enjoying the finest food humankind has to offer: Cheetos®. Then Big Jim's eyeball falls out of his head, and S.T. starts to think something isn't quite right. Even the slobbering affection of Big Jim's loyal but dim-witted dog, Dennis, fails to cure Big Jim's debilitating malady. S.T. is left with no choice but to abandon his old life and venture out into a wild and frightening new world with his trusty steed Dennis.

People are great... and awful
Revisado: 10-08-21
Though ostensibly a story about a domesticated crow and his dog navigating the zombie apocalypse, this is really a story about the beauty of what makes humans human and also... ideally ... a part of nature.
It's also a love story to Seattle. 🙂

An epic saga of America’s might-have-been, Voyage is a powerful, sweeping novel of how, if President Kennedy had lived, we could have sent a manned mission to Mars in the 1980s. Imaginatively created from the true lives and real events, Voyage returns to the geniuses of NASA and the excitement of the Saturn rocket and includes historical figures from Neil Armstrong to Ronald Reagan who are interwoven with unforgettable characters whose dreams mirror the promise of a young space program that held the world in thrall.

like a cross-country trip on back roads
Revisado: 08-07-21
In "Voyage," Baxter credibly charts a path for American exploration of Mars, including downsides. Happily, Baxter does not ignore character development along the way. On the other hand, he rarely moved the story along at anything more than a leisurely pace, with many engineering related diversions of great detail.
