Historia
Kiese Laymon is a fearless writer. In his essays, personal stories combine with piercing intellect to reflect both on the state of American society and on his experiences with abuse, which conjure conflicted feelings of shame, joy, confusion, and humiliation. Laymon invites us to consider the consequences of growing up in a nation wholly obsessed with progress yet wholly disinterested in the messy work of reckoning with where we’ve been.

Revisado: 01-12-22
What a book and what a brave perfect honest narration. Brutal. Important. Memorable. Beautiful. Twisted. In your face. On your knees. I will come back and hear it all again so I don’t forget.

Historia
In this powerful, edgy, and funny debut novel about making right and wrong choices, Bump gives us an unforgettable and lovable protagonist, Claude McKay Love. Claude is a young black man in search of a place where he can fit; born on the South Side of Chicago, he is raised by his civil rights-era grandmother, who tries to shape him into a principled actor for change. After a riot consumes his neighborhood, Claude decides to escape Chicago for another place, to go to college, to find a new life and identity. But he discovers, there's no escaping the people and places that made him.

Stunning, memorable, brave.
Revisado: 11-07-21
This book did not let me sleep. If Lonesome Dove were contemporary and set in Chicago and more of a coming of age book…this would be its twin. It yanks you in a cinematic way through a world with a lack of choices but there is a richness, almost obscene, to the characters lives. Brilliant. I can not wait for the next book by Bump.

The Mongol army led by Genghis Khan subjugated more lands and people in 25 years than the Romans did in 400. In nearly every country the Mongols conquered, they brought an unprecedented rise in cultural communication, expanded trade, and a blossoming of civilization.

And to think I thought I wouldn’t like reading a book about wars in history. This is so well written there was no way I was going to be able to stop listening. Perfection.

Historia
Nina once bought into the idea that her fancy liberal arts degree would lead to a fulfilling career. When that dream crashed, she turned to stealing from rich kids in LA alongside her wily Irish boyfriend, Lachlan. Nina learned from the best: Her mother was the original con artist, hustling to give her daughter a decent childhood despite their wayward life. But when her mom gets sick, Nina puts everything on the line to help her, even if it means running her most audacious, dangerous scam yet.

Historia
Nearly 70, Wes Hendricks has led a tough and colorful life as a cowboy and broncobuster, and all he asks now is that he be left alone on his poor, hardscrabble ranch in the West Texas hill country. Not a chance - the powers that be in the little town of Big River (including Wes' old cowboy pal, druggist/Mayor Orville Levitt) have decreed that an artificial lake will be created to generate tourism, and Wes' ranch stands squarely in their way.

Historia
I Am, I Am, I Am is Maggie O'Farrell's astonishing memoir of the near-death experiences that have punctuated and defined her life. The childhood illness that left her bedridden for a year, which she was not expected to survive. A teenage yearning to escape that nearly ended in disaster. An encounter with a disturbed man on a remote path. And, most terrifying of all, an ongoing, daily struggle to protect her daughter - for whom this book was written - from a condition that leaves her unimaginably vulnerable to life's myriad dangers.

Exquisite, memorable and long overdue
Revisado: 08-27-20
This book was such an all-encompassing pleasure to read. Her writing is aged oak whiskey...you just want to sip it slowly but doubt you can.
I plan on re-reading it and I have enjoyed following it up with Bill Bryson's book about Shakespeare just to put a bit more flesh on the bones of a masterful book.

As a vegetarian for thirty five years I thought there was little left for me to learn. How sweet it is to prove myself wrong. Now I have been vegan for six months and feel exponentially better. Hiking ten miles everyday and running up the steep short hills with my son. My whole family had benefitted from this book. Grateful it was written so well.

Astonishingly good writing
Revisado: 07-05-20
I love being surprised by a book and this one got me. Cheaper than a plane ticket to Istanbul but, at times, far more interesting and revealing. It reminds me of "Snow" by Orham Pamuk. It makes me want to go back to that fine city on the Bosphorus Sea and stay long enough to find interesting characters who may or may not also be parking lot attendants.
