Like Foxcatcher meets The Art of Fielding, Stephen Florida follows a college wrestler in his senior season, when every practice, every match, is a step closer to greatness and a step further from sanity. Profane, manic, and tipping into the uncanny, Stephen Florida a story of loneliness, obsession, and the drive to leave a mark.

Lyra is rushing to the cold, far North, where witch clans and armored bears rule. North, where the Gobblers take the children they steal—including her friend Roger. North, where her fearsome uncle Asriel is trying to build a bridge to a parallel world. Can one small girl make a difference in such great and terrible endeavors? This is Lyra: a savage, a schemer, a liar, and as fierce and true a champion as Roger or Asriel could want. But what Lyra doesn't know is that to help one of them will be to betray the other.

PERFECTION!!!!
Revisado: 01-17-25
i cannot overstate just how much i love not only the hardcopy of this book, but in particular the audiobook. it's a full cast and it is SO IMMERSIVE that you really feel transported to another world entirely.
there are 2 other books in the main trilogy (i have been afraid to move on from book 1 since i don't want anything bad to happen to these characters, haha), so i cannot speak to the quality of those, but if you buy ONE book on audible, have it be this one. you won't regret it. it is NOT a children's book, and i think adults will be able to appreciate the subtle themes in this book/trilogy far more than younger audiences which just adds to how wonderful this book is.

Historia
Even through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

wowwwwww. so glad i gave this one a shot!
Revisado: 01-14-25
i originally had zero interest (aside from seeing it was the pulitzer) in reading this. i had never heard of the author, nor did i care about or have any interest in reading anything about banking/financial stuff.
i managed to snag the audiobook first through my library, and was immediately hooked not only by the story, but by the narration of ballerini. before i even finished it, i bought the audiobook on here using on of my credits.
i was so invested (no pun intended) in the characters and story that had been told so far just in chapters 1 and 2, that it took literal DAYS for me to move beyond them (i kept listening and re-listening to those parts).
it was at the end of chapter 3 when i decided to buy the hard copy version of this book as well. this is EASILY one of the most gripping, fascinating, tragic, horrifying, compulsive books i’ve ever read.
i HIGHLY recommend the audiobook. it’s just fantastic. i ended up listening to the audiobook while reading the hard copy, and it was such an immersive experience. this is an automatic all time favorite.
10/10 stars. just so good! if you’re on the fence about this one, see if you can check it out for free through your library first like i did!

At twenty-four, Hera is a clump of unmet potential. To her, the future is nothing but an exhausting thought exercise, one depressing hypothetical after another. She’s sharp in more ways than one, adrift in her own smug malaise, until her new job moderating the comments section of an online news outlet—a role even more mind-numbing than it sounds—introduces her to Arthur, a middle-aged journalist. Though she's preferred women to men for years now, she soon finds herself falling into an all-consuming affair with him.

High school senior Andrew Perrault finds refuge in the twisted fairy tales that he writes for the only person who can ground him to reality—Thomas Rye, the boy with perpetually ink-stained hands and hair like autumn leaves. And with his twin sister, Dove, inexplicably keeping him at a cold distance upon their return to Wickwood Academy, Andrew finds himself leaning on his friend even more. But something strange is going on with Thomas. His abusive parents have mysteriously vanished, and he arrives at school with blood on his sleeve.

this was incredible!!
Revisado: 11-21-24
i actually only purchased this because i had a free credit, the cover was gorgeous, and i realized a while back that i have a thing for books that use body horror as a vehicle to explore grief.
i just finished this yesterday (i read it both by hard copy along with the audiobook at 1.5x speed which REALLY made it feel more intense/suspenseful IMO). this book the love child of romeo and juliet and annihilation.
i LOVED the narrator. he did an INCREDIBLE job. i am going to look for more books read by him.
i also LOVED how the author wrote, but i docked 1 star off because one plot point was VERY VERY obvious VERY VERY early on. i wish the author had been more subtle about it. I ultimately gave this 4 stars and was about to give it 4.5 stars when i was on the last page, but the very last sentence confused me so much and now i'm like HUH??
even so, i already want to re-read this one. this book is so unique, SO SO SO atmospheric, utterly absorbing, and is the ONLY book that managed to get me out of a 7 month reading slump!
thank you to the author, the narrator, and the person who designed the cover art or i never would have read this and would still be in a huge book slump.
actually, you know what? i'm giving this 4.5 stars. it's definitely worthy of that!
PLEASE give this one a shot! it's......weird and surreal and beautiful and horrifying and the author does do an incredible job of dropping bombs on you totally out of the blue and all of a sudden you see the story in a different light and now you don't know what to think which just makes you want to continue because you just need to know what is what! ahhh! loved this!!!

I originally HATED this but it quickly grew on me!
Revisado: 11-30-23
edit 01/2024: something has happened to this audiobook since i purchased it a while back, and most of chapter 6 is now missing. audible was great with trying to help me resolve this, but the issue could not be fixed, so i received a return credit back. hopefully this issue gets fixed soon because it's the best version (as noted in my original review below).
OK, so when i first listened to this through my local library, I was SO ANNOYED by the narrator's voice, the lack of plot, not understanding what was going on AT ALL, and the entire time I was just like HUH???? and cranking up the speed of the audiobook to 1.8x speed just to get through it.
BUT.....then i went on goodreads, read some reviews that gave MUCH NEEDED context, and then I couldn't get the story out of my head and i re-listened to it, and for some reason the narrator no longer annoyed me and it became my go-to book for falling asleep to.
One warning I will give: there are TWO versions of this SAME book here on audible. THIS version has chapter breakdowns with the characters names in them so you know who is talking (this made the original listen to this audiobook so confusing because I never knew who was talking) and this version is also cleaned up a bit and the narrator's voice is more clearer/pronounced.
I HIGHLY recommend only purchasing THIS version or I think you will run into the same problems that lead me to initially hating this book. But now I love it so much that I've bought a hard copy of the book.
If I could sum up this book without giving away any spoilers, I'd say it's about toxic friendships and is a 90% "vibes only" book but there is an actual plot in here, I promise.

Historia
Simone is one of the Glitterati, the elite living lives of luxury and leisure. Slave to the ever-changing tides—and brutal judgements—of fashion, he is immaculate. To be anything else is to be unfashionable, and no one wants to be unfashionable, or even worse, ugly. When Simone accidentally starts a new fashion with a nosebleed at a party, another Glitterati takes the credit. Soon their rivalry threatens to raze their opulent utopia to the ground, as no one knows how to be vicious like the beautiful ones.

Hidden Gem! I've never laughed so much at a book.
Revisado: 11-29-23
I am so bummed out that this doesn't have more reviews!! This is in my top 10 reads of all time. This book is totally absurd, hysterical, insane, heart-warming and just so many things. I honestly cannot believe someone was able to come up with such a unique story. This is probably my favorite audiobook out of every single one i've purchased on audible. There are some books that I've bought where there is zero re-readable quality, but that's not the case here. This book just gets funnier and funnier every single time I listen to it.
Thank you, Oliver for writing this masterpiece. Reading this immediately boosts my serotonin by approximately 47%.

After waiting for WEEKS and WEEKS hoping that my local library would have this audiobook available, I took the plunge and bought this. I had already listened to it once through my library weeks ago and couldn't get it out of my head and needed to listen to it again. I am listening to it now and this is by far my favorite audible purchase!
