A modern master of the historical novel, Jeff Shaara has painted brilliant depictions of the Civil War, the Revolutionary War, and World War I. Now he embarks upon his most ambitious epic, a trilogy about the military conflict that defined the 20th century. The Rising Tide begins a staggering work of fiction bound to be a new generation's most poignant chronicle of World War II.

Dull
Revisado: 11-12-18
Who knew World War II could be so boring? Tried, trite, cliched writing not improved by a droning narration. Looking once more for a good WWII story.

He's to hunt down and kill Reinhard Ernst - the ruthless architect of Hitler's clandestine rearmament.

I’m trying to find another Alan Furst or Philip Kerr, unfortunately this isn’t it. And the narration- finally a cure for insomnia with a droning monotone

Was that really only one person? And how does Cornwell produce that much detail? Another great listen.

It is 1956, and Bernie Gunther has a new name (Christoph Ganz), a clean passport, a chip on his shoulder, and a menial low-paying job in Munich. And then an old friend arrives to repay a debt. He encourages Bernie to take a job as a claims adjuster in a major German insurance company. Which is why Bernie, as Christoph, finds himself in Athens investigating a claim by Siegfried Witzel, a brutish former Wehrmacht soldier who served in Greece during the war.

Not his best
Revisado: 04-24-18
Disappointed. I think the author has run out of witticisms and quips. The narrator didn’t distinguish the voices enough. Sometimes it wasn’t clear who was speaking.

Historia
In the heart of Elizabethan England, Richard Shakespeare dreams of a glittering career in one of the London playhouses, a world dominated by his older brother, William. But he is a penniless actor, making ends meet through a combination of a beautiful face, petty theft, and a silver tongue. As William's star rises, Richard's onetime gratitude is souring, and he is sorely tempted to abandon family loyalty.

Historia
With dazzling wit and astonishing insight, Bill Bryson - the acclaimed author of The Lost Continent - brilliantly explores the remarkable history, eccentricities, resilience, and sheer fun of the English language. From the first descent of the larynx into the throat (why you can talk but your dog can't) to the fine lost art of swearing, Bryson tells the fascinating, often uproarious story of an inadequate, second-rate tongue of peasants that developed into one of the world's largest growth industries.

Not best as an audible book
Revisado: 08-05-17
First of all didn't realize the original date as 1990. Dan Quayle mis-speaking when we had such a rich source in Bush 43. Doesn't work well as audible due to the endless amount of words spelled out. And often so many examples were used for one phenomenon that it was a little painful. Otherwise some great information.
