Historia
Follow New York Times best-selling author Mary Roach - but be careful not to trip - as she weaves through personal anecdotes and everyday musings riddled with her uncanny wit and amazingly analytical eye. These essays, which found a well-deserved home within the pages of Reader's Digest as the column "My Planet," detail the inner workings of hypochondriacs, hoarders, and compulsive cheapskates. (Did we mention neurotic interior designers and professional list makers?) For Roach, humor is hidden in the most unlikely places, which means that nothing is off limits.

Cute Mary Roach book Horribly Narrated
Revisado: 12-03-21
Couldn't finish this with the narrator shouting at me in a nasally monotone. Planning to find the book at my library and read it that way. Save your money and don't buy the audio version!

Historia
Mo Collins, the reluctant hero, has sailed around the country on board the replica pirate ship, the Viva Ancora, and now he finds himself only miles from his childhood home. But now the world has gone to hell. Hordes of naked, blue, biting zombies have flooded the now dead Alabama lake town. Mo and his only surviving shipmate, Crow, are surviving. They fish and watch the monsters roam the night; seeking untainted flesh and leaving a disgusting mess in their wake. But when a lone survivor stumbles upon Mo and Crow they gain a new crew member but also find much needed direction.

Stereotypes galore
Revisado: 11-03-20
I have no idea how this book has so many good reviews. It's poorly written and reads like an instruction manual on how to write a zombie book. The narrator reads with a painfully bad southern accent, particularly the black character, who is written as an insultingly bad stereotype. There's also a part where the narrator pats himself on the back for not taking advantage of his female friend when they were drunk, and then says he regrets it. Thanks for reminding me why Alabama is the second-worst state.

Historia
He knew it was a dumb stunt from the start. A midnight run through a cemetery to impress a couple of girls isn't the stuff of legend, but Alex Carlisle longs to escape the crushing mediocrity of life after high school. Then, he stumbles upon the ritual, the cultists, and two bound and bloodied women. Alex intervenes, and the ritual blows up in his face, leaving him bound to them both: Rachel and Lorelei, an angel and a succubus.

Ew
Revisado: 06-13-20
This should be under erotica, not science fiction. The sex scenes aren't there to add a little spice to the plot, they are the plot, and they're cringy. To be fair, I only made it about 6 chapters in before I had to turn it off.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Could Not Finish
Revisado: 09-15-19
I made it most of the way through the discussion about Sandusky and Nassar and couldn't finish. It seemed that he was normalizing believing pedophiles instead of their victims. It was disgusting when he used the inconsistency of Nassar's victim's stories to try and discredit them. Victims of trauma frequently remember dates or details incorrectly, it doesn't mean they weren't actually victimized. They don't deserve to be victimized again by the court of public opinion. I strongly disagree with the overall theme of the book, and think we can all be a little more of a whistle blower without walking around mistrusting every one we meet.

Katherine Nichols knew she’d had too many drinks, but they were only going a short distance. “There’s no traffic anyway,” Eve had pointed out. And they'd had such a great night out, the two of them. Even now, driving them home and knowing she shouldn’t, seemed almost mischievous. All part of the fun. Not anymore.

Revisado: 04-02-18
I have loved Dave Barry's writing since I started reading his column syndicated in the Tampa Tribune as a kid. This book was slow moving and slapstick. I did not finish it. Would recommend literally anything else by Dave Barry over this book.

Historia
After the sudden death of her husband, Sheryl Sandberg felt certain that she and her children would never feel pure joy again. "I was in 'the void,'" she writes, "a vast emptiness that fills your heart and lungs and restricts your ability to think or even breathe." Her friend Adam Grant, a psychologist at Wharton, told her there are concrete steps people can take to recover and rebound from life-shattering experiences. We are not born with a fixed amount of resilience. It is a muscle that everyone can build.

Cliche crime novel with unnecessary time travel.
Revisado: 03-26-17
If you like stereotypical PI crime novels that feature larger than life alcoholic detectives rescuing typecast dames while mentally and physically humiliating any one who crosses them, this is the book to boost your fragile male ego. I think the reviewer who wrote that the book was, "written by a smart person for people who aren't," summed it up pretty well.

Historia
When Belle Boggs' "The Art of Waiting" was published in Orion in 2012, it went viral, leading to republication in Harper's Magazine and an interview on NPR's The Diane Rehm Show. In that heartbreaking essay, Boggs eloquently recounts her realization that she might never be able to conceive. She searches the apparently fertile world around her - the emergence of 13-year cicadas, the birth of eaglets near her rural home, and an unusual gorilla pregnancy at a local zoo - for signs that she is not alone.

Not for me
Revisado: 09-09-16
I did not enjoy this book. The author seems obsessed with having a baby. My partner and I are successful, career minded people who delayed having children and are just starting to explore asisted conception possibilities so I was initially excited to hear someone else's journey. Unfortunately, I just couldn't relate to the author at all. My sense of self and accomplishment is in no way tied to my ability to make a baby and it seems like the author's is, which is cool for her but not something I want to invest time hearing about. The reader was plodding and monotone and made a bad narrative worse. To be fair, I only made it to Chapter 3 before deciding I didn't want to waste any more time so maybe it gets better or I missed the point.

A week before it is scheduled to open, its curator is murdered at a clandestine meeting on the outskirts of Rome. Well read but I didn't enjoy the story
Revisado: 08-27-16
This book seemed to have no point. I stuck with it for a while because the narration was great but I finally had to admit that it just wasn't holding my interest and I didn't care to invest another 10 hours finding out what happened to Simon, or Peter, or the rest. If you find a full Catholic Mass riviting, you may enjoy this but it was just too dull for me.
