If you like Gory, descriptive horror with otherworldly monsters and conspiracies & cults (oh my!!) you should definitely enjoy this one! For me personally, I prefer a little less gore and yes, I know what you’re thinking... ‘if you don’t like guts and blood why are you reading horror??’ I’m more of a ‘ghost haunting the abandoned mental hospital’ type girl, I tolerate gore to a certain extent but this went just a bit past that extent! So, that’s why I rate this at 3.5 stars, rounded up to four. I was still sucked into the plot and sufficiently creeped out. I love horror books involving cults and entire creepy towns and this was definitely that and more. And, as always, I loved Hannibal Hills’ narration (his voice is made for horror). So, I definitely still consider this a good read. I made the mistake of trying to eat while listening at one point and no joke had to stop... for a lot of people, that’s exactly what they want in a horror read... So, if you’re one of them you’ll love this book! I received a copy of this audiobook from the author in exchange for this honest review.

I thoroughly enjoyed Lee Mountford’s full length novels (especially Forest of the Damned) so I thought I’d give this collection a try, even though short stories typically aren’t my favorite. These were great. Creepy-leave the nightlight on-jumping at every creak- great! I especially loved that there were prequels to his previous novels (that I need to go re-read,now that I know the backstories). There were horror stories of all types from the just plain gruesome, to the straight up scary. Not to mention, one of them was almost identical to a nightmare I had as a kid that has stuck with me my entire life... so, that was a bit traumatic. And as always, Hannibal Hills’ narration was spot on. Not so over the top you’re laughing when you’re supposed to be scared (as with some other horror narrators) but with enough drama that you can feel the fear. This was a great collection, I’m definitely looking forward to volume 2. I received a copy of this audiobook from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Did you really have to leave it like that ?? Dude! All I can say is I hope you’re back to writing super fast because I can’t wait to find out what happens next! So I fell in love with the First Colony series immediately. I binge listened to the first four books and loved them all. Then I saw that 5, 6 & 7 had come out and I’d missed them! That won’t happen again as I’m now following Ken Lozito (on Amazon and goodreads just to clarify...not a creepy stalker). I still liked 5&6 a lot, enough to keep going... but I’ll admit I enjoyed the first four a bit more & Vigilance is back to that level. I can’t imagine how difficult it is for authors to keep long series fresh and exciting so definite props for being successful in that . This series is what got me reading sci-if; I hadn’t given it a fair chance before and I’ve found I quite like it! . I love the whole crazy new world in this series, the wacky New Earth creatures and especially the characters (yep, crushing on Connor Gates!). And Scott Aiello is such a great narrator!! He is absolutely one of my fav male narrators. His accents are great and his timing and tone delivering the one liners and witty comments make me laugh out loud. My only complaint (and it is a big one) is I don’t want to wait to find out what happens next!! Whoever said patience is a virtue never listened to this series! Thanks to Ken Lozito and Scott Aiello for another great listen!

Haunted forest, ghost hunters, creepy witch-monster... need I say more? Oh, yes?
Okay then... Set in a supposed haunted forest, a group of four friends and ghost hunters go out in hopes of catching something supernatural on camera. Well, let’s just say they get more than they bargained for. Okay, while I was just super cliche, the book is not! This was a good, creepy, horrible (good horrible) horror story. It’s one of those that will make you think twice about going off on your own in the woods the next time you go camping. I loved Hannibal Hills narration, he’s not at all over the top, like some horror narrators, but is great at building up the tension. I’m one of those people who can’t get enough of scary movies and ghost stories so if you relate to that you will definitely enjoy this supernatural horror. It’s just the right kind of disturbing-creepiness. .

My fav new fantasy writer

The detail of Ms.Chakraborty’s conceived world is incredible. You can close your eyes as your listening to Soneela’s calm voice and imagine yourself walking the streets of Daevabad alongside daevas, shafit and djinn. The politics of Daevabad are also spot on. In war, no one is innocent, yet both sides believe they’re justified in committing horrible atrocities because the other side has committed horrible atrocities. It becomes a bloody, tragic cycle and in the end both sides have equally as much blood on their hands. I like that there’s not a clear cut “good side” and “bad side” in the djinn/shafit/Daeva war, it makes it much more realistic. This is a beautiful work of fantasy, my only complaint is that I have to wait for the next book to find out what happens next because it does end with quite a cliffhanger.

this book was absolutely terrifying because (as the author mentions at the end) after Snowden it’s hard not to admit that most of the NSA monitoring stuff is not only possible but probable. I’ve never been a conspiracy theorist but I may be now. At least, I can now say I will never own an amazon echo or other home assistance products like it, I’ll always keep my webcam covered when not in use & I will always be afraid to speak when my cell phone is in my pocket. But even with those precautions, if half of this book is true (which we have to admit it is) none of that would stop someone who wanted to listen in or watch me. I’m grateful to be a nobody right now! Anyway, in all seriousness I have recently come to love Barry Eisler. I’ve read all the John Rain novels & novellas & most of his stand-alone’s . The first book I read by him was Livia Lone and I was so horrified & disgusted by the description & detail given about what happened to child trafficking victims that I wasn’t planning to continue with Mr.Eisler’s books. But I’m so glad I did. He is a very descriptive author (which usually I appreciate but not so much in the Livia Lone book). His characters are always well built and very... human. Not perfect, yet not evil (usually). The best part of his novels, especially this one, is how he entwines real life events into the story. That’s the reason this novel was so scary though, because you have to wonder how much of the NSA monitoring part is true. Thank you for another thought provoking and enthralling read Mr. Eisler!

This book had me crying, laughing, full of rage. I was on an emotional roller coaster. I’ll be honest, it had me bawling... like snorting, ugly crying. It had me grieving for the innocence and childhood that was lost by a little girl who was raised in a hideous world where every adult she came across failed her. It was so well written it had me crying for a little girl who only existed between the pages of this book. I had to remind myself over and over that it was a work of fiction. The last time a book had me this emotional was when I read “Old Yeller” and “Where the Red Fern Grows” when I was 10. This was a hard read emotionally, because no matter how much I told myself “this isn’t real” I couldn’t deny the fact that there are so many children in this world who are treated like the beautiful little girls in this book and have their innocence ripped away all too soon by adults who are supposed to protect them. I cannot imagine writing this book was easy. So, I applaud the author for writing an ugly truth that we often choose to ignore. If we don’t face reality we can’t fix our mistakes. So thank you for a thought provoking, heart wrenching read.

Book made movie seem Disney!

This was way creepier than the movie! Reading and especially listening to this novel made me seriously miss the pea soup and spinning heads because that was Disney compared to what my head came up with while reading this ! I think the machinations of your own brain are scarier than any movie could properly capture. At least, what my brain came up with sure was. And okay, who am I kidding? I enjoy being scared by books and movies, hence reading this, so I loved every second of it. The narrator's voice was made for this genre, his low almost flat tone was nice and dramatic while not being over the top. Just don't make the mistake of listening at or through the night, I regretted that.
