Historia
Anne Gallagher grew up enchanted by her grandfather’s stories of Ireland. Heartbroken at his death, she travels to his childhood home to spread his ashes. There, overcome with memories of the man she adored and consumed by a history she never knew, she is pulled into another time. The Ireland of 1921, teetering on the edge of war, is a dangerous place in which to awaken. But there Anne finds herself, hurt, disoriented, and under the care of Dr. Thomas Smith, guardian to a young boy who is oddly familiar.

You have to love Ireland
Revisado: 03-29-25
I briefly stopped this book about a third in….if you don’t know Irish history the initial diary entrances by TS can be daunting. Also so much doom & gloom….but the little boy Owen & the love between the two main characters made up for it. Against all expectations there is actually a happy ending which prompted me to give 4 stars.

Too much killing
Revisado: 03-04-25
I should have known- but the killing of the 'old grey men' (huge elephant bulls) just became too much for me & I couldn't finish.
Also take note that witchcraft & witch doctoring features quite a bit in this book.

The narrator spoils this bok!
Revisado: 07-02-24
The storyline might be good but being a South African myself I found the narrator's accents appalling. It spoilt the book so badly that I don't even know if I'll take on another Tony Park book.....I have seen his later books narrated by other narrators, I might take a chance again- but not soon.

So much hardship
Revisado: 06-27-24
It was fascinating albeit upsetting, to read about the unfair legal system in England all those years ago. The cruelty & incredibly harsh circumstances these women had to endure was heart wrenching. The storyline was so-so although I found the historical facts of the time it played out very informative. Didn’t like the narrator at all so I struggled through.

Revisado: 05-04-24
I loved the storyline and narration of ‘the Henna artist’ The story was intriguing & the insight into casts, organised marriages, the impoverished & the wealthy was truly insightful. I didn’t like the second book as much & I think that was mainly because of the narration….not sure I’m up for ‘the Perfumist’

I've been so disappointed the last couple of months with audio books that I'm happy to report that I thoroughly enjoyed this one. It may have been dark & tragic even but the plots & twists cept one guessing & there is actually a 'happy' ending. Time well spent

A weird but captivating listen...
Revisado: 09-14-23
I was looking for another book read by Julie Stevenson & came across "Miss Benson's Beetle". It's nothing like I've ever listened to before & for a while I couldn't decide whether I should push forward or return the book. The main character is far from anything /anyone I could identify with, but the characters & storyline became entriquing & I pushed on. Excellent narration & in the end such lovely character development. Nothing predictable about this read but one that you won't easel forget.

I nearly gave up in the first chapter....but pushed on in exasperation. Once the story begins to flow through the young Cory's eyes or truly is captivating. His insight even as a young boy & the lifeless ons hidden I between the chapters are gems I thoroughly enjoyed. Loved the narrater too.
