I admit I downloaded this because I love Amanda Ronconi and I have the Romance Package. I was just looking for something to occupy my brain while doing some mindless tasks. I was surprised when I was hooked in the first chapter. The writing was smart, the character development was complete and the plot was believable. This was my first Cara Lockwood book and I look forward to more. My only complaint is it was too short. There was some drama at the end that felt rushed or not explored enough but not enough to detract from my overall enjoyment of the book. If you are looking for a quick romance, I do recommend The Shark and I.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I'm not sure but they should listen at 1.25X at least... it really helps.

Would you ever listen to anything by Jessica Sims again?

Yes, I like Jessica Sims, it was just this book. The story felt like it dragged on and the twists at the end were surprising but not given enough time to explore. And who doesn't know basic vampire lore? Apparently the two female leads in this story have never watched a movie or read a book. And they seem like the kind who at least watched Buffy.

What about Elizabeth Hart’s performance did you like?

The voices of the characters were distinct and easy to figure out who was speaking. I didn't like the pacing. I ended up speeding up the play to 1.25X and it helped a lot.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Blah, just blah. I'm glad it's a one off and not part of a series because I don't care enough about the characters to find out what happens to them next. Also glad I got it as part of the Romance Package and didn't use a credit on it.

Any additional comments?

The Publisher's Summary is off. The vampire is not a billionaire. This is not part of the Midnight Liaison series. These feel like an entirely different type of vampires in an entirely different universe. I wouldn't rank the Steaminess at Sizzling, but my mood might have been tainted by the rest of the story.

The only bad thing I can say about this story is there are some obvious edits. You can hear where part of a sentence had to re-recorded, it's noticeable but not distracting. I like having two narrators for the different POVs. Hope they keep that up for the Mystic Bayou novels.

And if you are a fan of Molly Harper you will not be disappointed. Great characters, tight story, wonderful new universe and there is a opossum reference. Remember: It's not a matter of if but when there will be a opossum attack in a Molly Harper novel.

*** I received an Audible version of the book from the author for an honest review ***

Given this was an audio version of the book the first thing I notice is the reader's voice. At first she sounded like she was going for an Irish brogue or English accent for Sunaya Baine, the central character, then accent settled into an generic American accent. This was a little distracting at first but soon forgotten when the plot takes hold.

It is evident that this is the first book in a series and there needs to be some world building. The author doesn't play down to the reader over explaining everything. Ms. Walt builds a fantastic world where the populous is divided into three races. The superior (in their opinion) race is the Mages, they have magic and control the world. The Mages do not believe anyone except a full blooded mage should have any magic and will strip the magic from a half breed child, they are not as kind to half breed adults. Below The Mages are humans and beneath them are the shifters. Sunaya is a half breed shifter/mage, which is very rare. Sunaya has spent her life hiding her magic abilities, most people assume she's a shifter/human hybrid and she doesn't correct them. She has chosen a career path as an Enforcer, a military/police guild that maintains the law as the Mages dictate it. Early in the book Sunaya's mentor is killed but before he dies, he tells her to look into a series of shifter deaths that are being ignored by the Enforcers and the press. And this is where her adventure begins.

Being this is the first in a series I was expecting a cliff hanger that would make me want the next book immediately. While there is a bit of a cliffhanger in an unresolved story arc, this book can stand on it's own. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a lighter fantasy world with an overarching mystery. The main character is sarcastic and confrontational, she grew up in a world that sees her as a third class citizen and she's skeptical of any kindness shown towards her by strangers. She is accustom to being on her own. She's a strong female character with flaws, making her more realistic and easier to relate to.

It's not a heavy read, but it's not light and fluffy either, it's a good solid story. I dare to say it feels more like some of the YA novels I read but more on the adult side, is that the genre New Adult? There is violence, it's the nature of the world the main character lives in. There is no explicit sex but there is one attempted rape and some sexual references. The story flows well and it never felt like the author was trying to force a scene that didn't work with the story she was telling. I look forward to reading more in this series.

A wonderful story of how Andrea and Dick started their lives together. Taking place at the end of Nice Girls Don't Date Dead Men and before Nice Girls Don't Live Forever, you get Andrea back story and how she started her life with Dick.

The only thing this book was lacking was a possum attack! How can it be a Molly Harper book without a possum attack?? (Unless I completely missed it, in which case someone tell me where the possum is, thank you)

Refreshing Characters for Chick Lit

Finally characters that don't keep their secrets from the person who could help them when asked directly about them. One of my pet peeves about a lot of chick lit romances.

Finally characters who don't assume the rumors or half truths they hear about another person as the absolute truth and instead actually talk to that person to get the real truth. Another pet peeve.

Finally characters who don't act like total idiots when they find themselves in a fish out of water scenario. Watch how others behave, ask questions, don't assume all Hollywood stereotypes are true. Yet another pet peeve.

Kristen Painter gave us smart characters who use their brains and talk to each other. Every time I wanted to scream "Just tell him the truth already!", they were already doing it and working to solve the problems together.

As for B.J. Harrison: I was not expecting a male voice. I'm so used to female narrators for all more humorous paranormal romances I read I wasn't sure when I heard his voice at first. But his narration is wonderful and a pleasant surprise.

Great novella to add to the Soul Screamers series but you should read this before book 4, My Soul to Steal.

*****SPOILERS*****

If you read My Soul to Steal first you are introduced to Sabine with no back story and it's hard to be sympathetic to that character. Reading Fearless first gives you a different perspective on her and may allow you not to see her as the heartless troublemaker she seems to be in My Soul to Steal. Which I read them in that order, instead it took me awhile to give Sabine a chance to be more than an thorn in Kaylee's side and an unnecessary distraction to Nash.

Compared to how alchemy factors in Deborah Harkness' All Souls Trilogy this is a much lighter view. Zoe Faust is an natural alchemist, trained at a young age to perform the more spectacular transformations, she prefers working with herbs and plants. She uses that knowledge to identify poisons and toxic combinations just by smell. I found her a likable character with believable flaws and traumas from her past. The narrator does a wonderful job with all the characters and accents. I look forward to more in the series.

What did you love best about Better Homes and Hauntings?

With the her usual wit and humor, Molly Harper creates an ensemble of characters that are realistic, sarcastic and endearing. I want to be in this unlikely group of friends.

What did you like best about this story?

The story starts off as 5 strangers (well, 3 strangers and 2 cousins) stuck on an island that is rumored to be haunted. They come together to learn more about the original residents and solve the mystery. It's like Scooby-Doo for adults.

Have you listened to any of Amanda Ronconi’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I always find Amanda a joy to listen to. I find her ability to voice each character uniquely so I can follow conversations between multiple character a great talent. With some narrators I have to relisten to passages to figure out who said what, I don't have to do that with Amanda.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

At the end of the second chapter, there is a conversation between Nina and Cindy that made me laugh out loud. Up until that point I wasn't sure if this story would have them be friends or not. When Nina suggested making a drinking game out of Cindy's situation and Cindy laughed instead of being offended, I was hooked.

Any additional comments?

Most of Molly's stories take place in Kentucky or Alaska, two places I have never been. This one takes place at a gilded age mansion off the coast of Newport. Though the location is fictional, she describe the look of those mansions so well I decided to visit them this weekend.

Would you listen to Dark Lover again? Why?

Yes, the story would hold up to being listened to again. There is a large cast but everyone has their own quirks and if I took a break I would re-listen to re-familiarize myself with the Brotherhood and their family.

What about Jim Frangione’s performance did you like?

His voice set the tone for the book. This may be another vampire romance type book but it is more masculine and the Brotherhood is the main focus. They are large, gruff and often violent men. There is no sparking skin here.

If you could take any character from Dark Lover out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Butch and Vihous because I'm a Boston Red Sox fan too. Rhage because he's beautiful to look at. Beth and Wellsie for a girls night out.
