Historia
Everyone has a story to tell. But does Janice have the power to unlock her own? She can’t recall what started her collection. Maybe it was in a fragment of conversation overheard as she cleaned a sink? Before long (as she dusted a sitting room or defrosted a fridge) she noticed people were telling her their stories. Perhaps they had always done so, but now it is different, now the stories are reaching out to her and she gathers them to her.

Did not think this would be my cup of tea at first but once I got into it I was hooked. Very layered and captivating plots. Lovable characters and great pace.

Hard to Put into Words How Great
Revisado: 09-06-23
Narrator Robin Miles is so gifted. She deserves all the awards. This book was indescribably well written, impactful, hard to both consume and put down. It informed me of so many aspects of Haitian history, culture, man’s inhumanity to man and the incredible miracle of survival. Really amazing book. I never write reviews!!!

I was enthralled in this plot and how it got resolved. I wanted more background on certain things but overall a very good book.

For 12-year-old Cora Landry and her friends Violet and Jordyn, it was supposed to be an ordinary sleepover - movies and Ouija and talking about boys. much ado...so much ado
Revisado: 07-30-20
I felt hoodwinked. Too many...WAY TOO MANY red herrings, false bottoms and tricks up the sleeve...all for that paltry, though sad, explanation. Geesh! Could have been a short novella.

Captivating
Revisado: 06-28-20
So expertly crafted and subtle yet powerful in its delivery and tone. It's a book about so many things at once...you can interpret many themes. Choices, secrets, love, the ties that bind as well as the ones that we're able to loosen for freedom. Wonderful book!!!

EXCELLENT and FLAWLESS Narration
Revisado: 08-19-16
Adenrele Ojo did a masterful job with this audio book. I felt like the storyline could have had a bit more excitement and drama, but fascinating accounting of the times, and very interesting characters.

Historia
Luisa "Lu" Brant is the newly elected - and first female - state's attorney of Howard County, Maryland, a job in which her widower father famously served. Fiercely intelligent and ambitious, she sees an opportunity to make her name by trying a mentally disturbed drifter accused of beating a woman to death in her home. It's not the kind of case that makes headlines, but peaceful Howard County doesn't see many homicides.

Very Unique and EXCELLENTLY Written
Revisado: 06-15-16
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The plot kept me on the edge of my seat because of how it was written. It lulls you into thinking it's just a sort of memoir or, but all the pieces come together to reveal mystery upon mystery...secret upon secret, lies upon lies.
Any additional comments?
As a MD resident, I always love listening to Lippmans books because she includes so many local references. The narrator must not be from the area, though, because many names were mispronounced. Such as Catonsville...(Long A sound)....but it wasn't too distracting.

Uniquely Written and EXCELLENTLY Narrated
Revisado: 06-04-16
So, I can't say I LOVED the book, because I did NOT love or feel for the main character AT ALL. The shallowness of the secondary characters was annoying too....HOWEVER, I'm glad I listened to it and I enjoyed it a lot. The constant literary and cinematic references became a bit MUCH...,mainly because I didn't "get" all the references....but contextually they would have added to my experience if they were references that I "got". I literally yelled at the end....so I guess I was pretty invested.

The plot was good, but the story and action scenes seemed to plod on till boredom. Something was missing but not sure what. Maybe more insight into the past and how things transpired. Not a bad listen though.
