Heralded as an instant classic of fantasy literature, Maguire has written a wonderfully imaginative retelling of The Wizard of Oz told from the Wicked Witch's point of view. More than just a fairy tale for adults, Wicked is a meditation on the nature of good and evil.

Decent, but not great
Revisado: 01-20-06
The concept for this book intrigued me - what an original idea! The moral and ethical questions raised are thought provoking and this should be a great book. However, I found that it didn't keep my attention. It was one of those "reads" where you suddenly realize that you haven't been listening for several minutes. I found myself constantly rewinding and relistening to parts because my mind wandered off. The narrator is good, so that wasn't the issue. I think part of the problem is that the writing is a little stiff, or, as the author would say, "the prose is a tad stilted".
Still, I listened to the whole book and probably got my credit's worth, so I rate it a 3.

Cute and light

This is light reading that is fun to listen too, especially during the holiday season. It is a "feel good" story that won't win any literary awards but does a good job of keeping you entertained. I enjoyed it!

Couldn't even finish!
Revisado: 09-29-05
Goodness but this was a boring book. Just flat-out B-O-R-I-N-G!! I am not a golfer, but my husband is an avid golfer, so I think I know more about the sport than most non-golfers. But I really expected some kind of STORY - foolish me!
I ended up telling my husband that I had a hard time getting through this (he had read the book previously) and his response was, "Oh, I could have told you it was dull!" Well, now I am telling you - this is DULL! Keep in mind that I sometimes enjoy slow paced, descriptive, insightful books. This isn't one I enjoyed - couldn't even finish it!

Historia
For two thousand years, cadavers have been involved in science's boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. They've tested France's first guillotines, ridden the NASA Space Shuttle, been crucified in a Parisian laboratory to test the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin, and helped solve the mystery of TWA Flight 800. For every new surgical procedure, from heart transplants to gender reassignment surgery, cadavers have been there alongside surgeons, making history in their quiet way.

Ok...not great but not a waste of a credit
Revisado: 09-29-05
This book was only 'ok'. I like all types of books, so I think I am a pretty open minded listener. I am not easily offended, and this book didn't really offend me, but I could see where some people could be VERY turned off. The author tries to add humor - sometimes I believe in an attempt at comic relief, but often falls short by being too flippant or just plain not funny.
It was interesting to hear all of the different ways a cadaver can be used in the name of science, and also to hear the different uses and superstitions that have transpired through the years.
This wasn't a bad book - I think many people will find it mildly entertaining while some will hate it.

Historia
Sofie's a young Greek American woman living in Queens. If you'd asked her a few months ago what she'd be doing now, she'd have replied, "I'm going to be married to a wonderful guy and working at my father's Greek restaurant." That was before Sofie caught the groom in a compromising position with her maid of honor. Before she punched the priest who tried to get her to marry the cad anyway. Before she chucked her engagement ring into the garbage disposal. Before she became a junior detective for her uncle's detective agency.

Amusing, a la Big Fat Greek Wedding
Revisado: 09-29-05
This book kept me entertained. It isn't going to be marked as a "Great Work of Fiction", but it passed some hours enjoyably. The narrator was interesting - there were a few voices that were pretty remarkable. One of Sofie's grandfathers sounded like a completely different narrator - and very male! But then the narrator also did some accents horribly - particularly the secretary at the office. Luckily, she is a small character, so you don't have to listen to it much!

Narrator varies volume - very annoying
Revisado: 09-29-05
I haven't yet finished this audiobook, so i can't comment on the story line, although so far it has kept my attention. However, the narrator many time uses the volume of his voice rather than the inflection to distinguish between characters. This causes two problems - all the women sound the same (quiet) and all the men sound the same (loud) except for two men who sound different from the others because they "talk" faster. But of course, those two fast, loud talkers sound the same. On top of being confusing because of the volume issue, it is also very difficult to hear. If you are listening on headphones, then you have to turn it up enough to hear the quiet voices, but then it blares in your ear when it is a loud person. Since sometimes a back-and-forth dialogue occurs between a 'loud' character and a 'soft' character, every other sentence can vary, so it isn't something you can just keep adjusting. Even when listening on a stereo it is still very annoying.

Very cute - light reading
Revisado: 09-07-05
I enjoyed listening to this book - I ended up liking the characters especially the main character, who was more down-to-earth than some of the secondary characters. It seems that whenever a story is set in NYC, I have to suspend fiscal reality as the books inevitably mention $500 Monolo shoes, etc, and everyone seems to be rich and famous; this book is no exception. The main character is a little more realistic, but just barely - she still manages to get an expensive gift from Tiffany's and moves in elite circles, but she does seem to recognize the extravagances. The book isn't "deep", but neither is it too shallow - it has enough substance that you can enjoy the light reading without it all seeming like a bit a fluff. It won't teach you any life lessons, but it will keep you entertained!

Terrible recording! Need facial expressions.
Revisado: 03-15-05
Brian Regan is a very funny guy. I know this because I have seen his standup on television. I wouldn't have known it from this recording. First, the recording itself is horrible. It is hard to hear some parts, then blaringly loud the next. Secondly, Regan's comedy loses most of its humor when you can't see his facial expressions. I didn't even finish this recording.

Lots of cursing, but I enjoyed the book
Revisado: 03-15-05
I enjoyed this book; the narrator was very good, and it was less a true "story" and more just extensive character development. However, I did feel the need to put a warning that foul language runs rampant throughout the book. If you can not tolerate a lot of cursing, this is not the book for you!

"If Robert Littell didn't invent the American spy novel," says Tom Clancy, "he should have." In this spectacular Cold-War-as-Alice-in-Wonderland epic, Littell, "the American le Carre," takes us down the rabbit hole and into the labyrinthine world of espionage that has been the CIA for the last half-century. "Ostensibly a single novel, The Company can also be listened to as an anthology of cracking good spy stories," says ( Publishers Weekly).

Couldn't finish it...
Revisado: 04-16-04
I couldn't finish this book. I tried, I really did, but everytime I went to listen it felt like a chore. I am giving this book 2 stars instead of 1, because this really isn't my typical genre, so maybe that is part of the problem.
The reader is fine, my problem is more in the character development and pace of the book. The characters seem false, and I feel like I should be taking notes so that I can remember who's who when I am introduced to them about once every two hours of listening.
I just kept waiting for the book to have some semblance of cohesiveness, and never found it.
