Historia
When Cora attends her sister's birthday party, she expects at most a hangover or a walk of shame. She doesn't anticipate a stolen wallet, leaving her stranded and dependent on Dean—her arch nemesis and ultimate thorn in her side. And she really doesn't anticipate waking up in shackles in a madman's basement. To make matters worse, Dean shares the space in his own set of chains. After fifteen years of teasing, insults, and practical jokes, the ultimate joke seems to be on them. The two people who always thought they'd end up killing each other must now work together if they want to survive.

Warning extreme sexual violence
Revisado: 02-09-25
Book Review: Still Beating by Jennifer Hartman
"Still Beating" by Jennifer Hartman is a gripping yet deeply unsettling read that captures the reader's attention from the very first page. The novel is a complex tapestry woven from elements of love, trauma, and survival, but it is undeniably graphic and confronts the reader with extreme sexual violence that can leave one feeling conflicted about the narrative.
From the outset, Hartman's writing pulls you in with its raw intensity. The characters are compelling, and their struggles are portrayed with a level of honesty that is both haunting and captivating. However, the graphic nature of the content, particularly the depictions of rape and torture, creates an uncomfortable reading experience. At times, I felt an unsettling sense of dirtiness while reading, grappling with the juxtaposition of love and horror that defines the story.
As the novel progresses, the focus shifts to the characters' journey toward healing and moving on from their traumatic experiences. Unfortunately, this is where my enthusiasm began to wane. While I appreciated the exploration of their emotional landscapes, the narrative felt excessively drawn out. The story seemed to meander for about 15 chapters longer than necessary, delaying the resolution and leaving readers in suspense about whether the two main characters would ultimately find their way back to each other.

Conflicted Reflections: Pride and Doubt in Mama Love's Journey
Revisado: 02-09-25
Book Review: The Many Lives of Mama Love
"The Many Lives of Mama Love" is a compelling and often poignant memoir that chronicles the tumultuous journey of a woman who has battled addiction and emerged on the other side. As I turned the pages, I found myself grappling with a complex mix of pride and concern. On one hand, I am genuinely proud of her for confronting her demons and achieving sobriety. Her resilience is undeniably impressive, and her accomplishments—such as ghostwriting for prominent figures like the Dalai Lama—speak to her talent and determination.
However, as I delved deeper into her story, I couldn't shake the feeling that Mama Love has not fully embraced the concept of accountability. Throughout the book, there seems to be a recurring theme of externalizing blame, with a tendency to portray herself as a victim of her circumstances and the people around her. While it’s clear that she has faced significant challenges, including a turbulent past and the impact of addiction, it feels as though there are moments when she deflects responsibility for the pain she has caused, particularly to her children.
Having struggled with addiction myself, I empathize with her struggles and understand the complexities of recovery. I am not judging her mistakes; rather, I believe that true accountability is a crucial part of healing. It's essential to recognize the impact of our actions on others, and in Mama Love's case, there are deep wounds inflicted upon her children that she must reckon with. Making amends is not just a matter of words; it requires genuine reflection and a commitment to change.

Mediocre
Revisado: 01-01-25
"The Energy Bus" is a cute read for educators, but unfortunately, it falls flat in terms of originality. While it offers a light, motivational narrative focused on positivity and teamwork, it doesn't provide any new insights or revelations. Overall, it's mediocre at best, serving more as a feel-good story than a source of profound inspiration. If you're looking for something fresh and groundbreaking, this might not be the book for you.

Revisado: 01-01-25
I just finished "Dead MED" by Frida McFadden, and I have to say, I really enjoyed it! This book is a pleasing departure from her usual storyline, and it kept me hooked from start to finish. I found myself wanting to know what happened next, and I ended up finishing it in just a day and a half! While it might not be the most mentally stimulating read, it's definitely interesting and does a fantastic job of keeping your attention. If you're looking for an engaging and entertaining book, I highly recommend giving this one a shot!

Revisado: 07-03-24
"The Measure" really got me thinking about what I would do if I were in that situation. The characters' moral dilemmas hit close to home, and I found myself questioning my own values and beliefs as I listened to their journey. The book's exploration of ethical complexity made me reflect on how I would handle similar challenges. It's a thought-provoking read that forces you to consider your own integrity and resilience in tough times. "The Measure" is a compelling story that will stay with you long after you finish it.

This book has stayed with me for 30 years
Revisado: 07-03-24
"Night" by Elie Wiesel is a haunting and powerful memoir that has stayed with me since I first read it in eighth grade many years ago. Recently, I decided to revisit this profound work before visiting a pop-up Auschwitz museum in Boston, but this time, I listened to it instead. Wiesel's poignant account of his experiences during the Holocaust serves as a stark reminder of the atrocities of war and the resilience of the human spirit. The emotions and reflections that "Night" evoked in me during my re-listen were both heartbreaking and enlightening, deepening my understanding of the historical events and the importance of never forgetting them. This book is a timeless masterpiece that continues to resonate with readers of all ages and backgrounds, urging us to confront the darkness of the past while striving for a brighter future.

Revisado: 07-03-24
"The Blue Bistro" is like a cozy getaway to Nantucket that hit close to home for me. The characters in this book felt so real, like people I could bump into at a local coffee shop or beachside restaurant. Adrienne's journey and the relationships between the characters captured the essence of coastal life in Massachusetts, making me feel right at home. This story is a heartwarming and relatable read that beautifully portrays the connections and charm of seaside living.

Uncomfortable at Times
Revisado: 07-03-24
As a teacher, I found 'The Teacher' by Freedom McFadden to be a compelling story that held my interest throughout. However, I must admit that I felt a bit uneasy while listening to it, as the subject matter touched on themes that made me cringe. Despite this discomfort, the novel's intriguing plot and character development made it a worthwhile read.
