I liked both the movie, and the original work, which has some enjoyable differences. So, if you liked the movie, then not surprisingly, the book provides you even more story. On the downside, the author exhaustively catalogs too many references to classic video games and 1980s media, as if he didnt want to fail to acknowledge every worthy title.

I enjoyed Wil Wheaton’s narration; to me he is the right voice for this story, and growing up during the 80's probably helped his appreciation and voiced enthusiasm for the material. Thanks Wil (Fawkes! ;^)

For me, this book brings up some interesting parallels to the world we live in now. I’d be curious to know how many of us might prefer the grand technological Oasis / dark dystopian trade off – to the seemingly just as addicting and consuming online oasis’s / milder dystopian trade off that today’s technology has already created for us?

I highly recommend this book to all parents – from those expecting a child to those with children in college, but this book is equally relevant to non-parents – to anyone wishing to understand the myths and messaging that are driving their own and society’s tech habits – how these are effecting us, and what to do about them. The author helps us understand the nature and impact of today’s family’s common digital screen tech habits on children and childhood, how our tech habits are driven by design for commercial interests, and the potentially serious risks as well as likely consequences that inappropriate digital tech exposure and habits can have on child development, adulthood, and the relationships between parents and children, siblings, friends, and adults.

Richard Fareed, does a remarkable job of clearing out the substantial clutter that confounds our perceptions due to the "digital myths" and conflicting messages we are constantly hearing about – with respect to the benefits and banes of digital technology, and our resulting susceptibility – mainly due to the overwhelming pro-tech biased media and other voices that promote and recommend more and more screen time to younger and younger children. These interests tend to encourage the over consumption of entertainment technology (e.g. TV, video gaming, social media, streaming media, etc.) and age inappropriate digital pastimes. Fareed comprehensively addresses the various myths and opposing arguments, and discusses why its important to clearly understand what’s being said and to know whether there are any financial motivations or biases accompanying claims and recommendations.

I’ve listened to several books that address digital wellbeing as well as a few that promote the more liberal consumption of tech by children, teens, and adults, and have consequently found this audiobook earns a well deserved maximum stars in every category. At only 6h 15m, one can easily glide through this book in a week or weekend; hopefully you will find it as worthwhile as I have.

Would you listen to The Many-Colored Land again? Why?

I enjoyed reading these books years ago, and so I was thrilled to see this first story of the 4-book series available in audiobook, but then devastated to learn that this is the only one they produced – back in 2010! This is an incredibly imaginative and intriguing story. There is no question I would purchase the remaining stories in audiobook should they become available.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the imaginative setting; Earth 6 million years ago; the author is very descriptive about the geography, flora, and fauna. The interesting situation of a one way portal, the alien-human society, interesting variety of well-developed characters, and the page-turning conflict.

What does Bernadette Dunne bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I thought the narrator really added to the interest, excitement, and entertainment of the story, which was especially helpful in getting through the set-up portion. Some of the reviewers had a negative opinion, but I couldn't disagree more. She did a great job with the various voices. I hope she narrates the remaining books in the series.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No, but I did wolf this audiobook down unusually quickly.

Any additional comments?

Julian, if your out there, please light a fire under your publisher's toes to clear the way for the rest of the audiobooks of the pliocene epoch!
