I never listen to non fiction. But I decided to listen to this book on a whim. OMG. I was blown away by Trevor's writing skills, his beautiful narration, and his life story. I simply cannot believe how well done this book is.
The tales are riveting and moving and often hilarious.
Even though racism is not the sole focus of this book, I wish everyone who doesn't understand how harmful racism is would listen to or read this book.

Enjoyable even with Ralph Cosham gone

It was very sad to hear that Ralph Cosham had died since the last book. I am so used to his soothing voice for Gamache that I was a bit nervous. However, Robert Bathurst did a really good job reading and it felt appropriate to have a new reader in light of the change in direction for the main characters.
This book was so much better than the last one (which for me has been the only disappointing book in the series) and I felt enthusiastic again about the story line. Per usual with this series, I did get a tiny inpatient with the cryptic nature of the plots. and I think the killer was unlikely. However, I love the characters and will stick with them until their or my bitter end.

I really enjoyed this book, as I have enjoyed the Matthew Corbett books of Robert McCammon. I was a bit worried that a book about a "wolf man" during WWII would be too campy to really enjoy, but that worry did not play out. Like other of McCammon's book, this one was really well written, had convincing dialogue, and was truly exciting! Like his other books, the only negative for me is that there are a bit too many details that make the book longer than it needs to be. However, that fact does not stop me from recommending it, and did not stop me from really enjoying this listen. I wish there were a sequel novel, but so far, only sequel short stories.

Again, I really enjoyed listening to the continuing sagas of Matthew. So well written, so well narrated. The plot was pretty much exciting from beginning to end.
My only concern is that the story is still not done, and the reviews for the book that follow this one are not stellar.
But, this book was a fantastic listen!

I love books where you want to listen to every word, and rewind when you miss something. This is how this book was for me. I had no idea what would happen next and I damn well wanted to know! The characters were all so well developed, and none were merely there to move the plot along. They all played important parts to the book's success, even those whom we hated at the beginning of the book. (Sometimes I think that detestable characters could be left out entirely without changing the success of a book.)
The book was extremely well written and edited, and was one of my favorites of the last two years. I thought the narrator was great and I would happily listen to her narrate another book.
Really awesome book.

If I were a book collector...

If I were a book collector, the details of this book would have kept me enthralled (I think). But I am not a book collector, and the details began to lose me and my attention. The book started strong, and I felt exhilarated to be listening to George Guidall reading what seemed like a very exciting book. But after a while, the excitement diminished, the plot got sidelined to make room for many details about book printing and book collection, and I started to not worry about what had happened to one of the characters who went missing. The ending was drawn out for hours, and I was not satisfied.
It's hard to not like a book that George Guidall narrates, but I just didn't enjoy this book very much.

I liked this almost as much as Book 2

Again, like Book 2 (Queen of Bedlam), this book kept my interest throughout, the mystery was developed and resolved in a consistently entertaining way, and the main characters were quite likable. The narrator does a great job with each of the characters too.
The only negative was that there was bit of redundant and tedious writing that made me antsy and impatient at points.
However, even with that flaw, I still would recommend this as a fun and engaging listen. And I do plan to listen to Book 4.
I just wish it were on sale like Book 2 and 3.

I bought this book because it was the sale of the day, and I ended up enjoying it immensely. Although it takes place in the late 1600s (or early 1700s), it was modern enough to keep my interest. Modern in the sense that women had voices and strength, and many of the male characters were very likable and modern-feeling. I could not stand to listen to a book where oppression and harshness of the day were the pervasive storyline.
The book was entertaining and the mystery is superbly developed and resolved. The reader did a very good job with the different characters' voices.
I liked this book so much I bought the next one (and plan to buy the others in the series too).
Highly recommended.
Note: If you are someone who is still sad that Caleb Carr did not write a third book in the Alienist series, you will get a bit of a fix listening to this book and its sequels. Has some of the same feel and humor present in the Alienist.

What a fabulous find. (I actually stumbled across this book by looking for books narrated by George Guidall, and bought it despite the occasional negative review. I was surprised to learn that so many of my friends had already read this book when it came out in the 90s because I hadn't heard of it.)
I have not enjoyed an audiobook so much in many months. It was a riveting listen, and as usual, George Guidall did an excellent job at bringing out the characters and making them feel so real. I was enthralled from beginning to end, and was so relieved to learn that there was a sequel (which I enjoyed almost as much as The Alienist).
I am totally sad this listen is over…I just wish Caleb Carr would write more in this series.
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!

Fantastic, per usual for Louise Penny. And the questions we have had have all been answered.
Definitely should read or listen to the books that preceded this one in order to fully follow the plot!
