Historia
In present-day California, Eleanor Bennett’s death leaves behind a puzzling inheritance for her two children, Byron and Benny: a black cake, made from a family recipe with a long history, and a voice recording. In her message, Eleanor shares a tumultuous story about a headstrong young swimmer who escapes her island home under suspicion of murder. The heartbreaking tale Eleanor unfolds, the secrets she still holds back, and the mystery of a long-lost child challenge everything the siblings thought they knew about their lineage and themselves.

No thanks
Revisado: 04-20-25
After finishing and absolutely loving "Good Dirt," I rushed to buy this title. What a difference, and not for the better! The narrator of this story has a lovely voice, but is terrible at voicing the characters. The overdramatic reading of the dialogue between the lead characters (the siblings) was enough to make me skip through several sections of the audiobook. The plot was interesting, but seemed to drag on to get to the point. I didn't get to the point where I cared about these bickering, overdramatic characters. I lost interest about 3 hours into the story. I'm really shocked by the glowing reviews, I found it to be a huge disappointment.

I dislike people. I despise humans. A cruel mandate from one of my region's rulers has saddled me with a slew of little alien humans: I'm to put them to work. One problem? I run a rock quarry, where humans’ thin skin is a detriment to productivity. Overseeing these humans is like trying to herd yanaks. If I don't burn, beat, or strangle them to death by the day's end, it will be a miracle.

Yeah, no.
Revisado: 11-17-24
I give credit to this author for creating such an interesting, thought-provoking context for this story. Super interesting creatures from other worlds that keep humans as pets, basically. However, this book has so many flaws that will keep you asking questions and wondering why there isn't more explanation or thoughtful development by the author. No, the main point is a rather juvenile story of horny (literally and figuratively) creatures in a context of other horny (figuratively) creatures. The plot centers on how they bond, have sex (in graphic detail), and then make each other jealous. It was intriguing to listen to how they manage to hook up, but the actual story was rather two-dimensional, flat, almost underdeveloped. The narration was great, but this story missed the mark on many levels.

Absolutely Amazing!
Revisado: 09-17-24
One of the best audiobooks ever made. What an incredibly powerful, mystical, and engrossing tale. Comparisons to the writings of Toni Morrison are warranted. Having the author narrate this story is such a great touch, it ensures the appropriate depth and nuance is conveyed. Having lived in Washington DC as a student at Howard University many, many years ago, I am familiar with the setting and the context of this story. I was able to connect with this story in so many ways. The breathtakingly beautiful, lyrical writing is absolutely superb. The cultural depth of this story is immense and disturbing, yet so relatable and accurate. The disturbing plot will keep the listener engrossed and enraged, yet sensitive to the humanity of these strange characters. This was simply amazing!!!!!!

Historia
Cameron Winter was born with the ability to recreate detailed crime scenes in his imagination and dissect the motives and encounters that produced them. And after reading a puzzling news story about a wealthy family killed in a small town in the Chicago suburbs, he can't resist the chance to apply this deductive power in the pursuit of justice for the victims. Three members of the family, along with their live-in nanny, were pulled from their burning mansion, already dead from gunshot wounds. The only survivor is a young boy whose memory of the event raises more questions than answers.

You're living dangerously now, Poetry Boy!
Revisado: 07-28-24
This is a quote! It was at this particular line that I realized this book was just... bad. I'm shocked by all the stellar reviews and found this book to be a major a disappointment. The occasional corny dialogue was just one issue. The biggest challenge is that the lead character is not likeable. He's an arrogant, sexist, busy body with an interesting backstory. I think the backstory was his most interesting trait, but this book really fails to engender any kind of sympathy for him in the present day. I grew tired of him lusting after the various women in the book like a horny, troubled teenager. And him being a poetry professor simply made him a stuffy, pontificating weirdo. Although the narration was fine, the story seems to drag on and on. I couldn't wait for this one to be over. It held my attention to the end, but it was a long and painful journey!

Historia
After dropping her child off at preschool, Marla Hancock, a stay-at-home mother, disappears. She had recently left her verbally abusive husband in rural Indiana and moved in with her sister, Shelly, who simply can’t believe that her sister would ever willingly vanish without her children. But with limited support from the town’s police department or media resources, Shelly fears that Marla’s disappearance won’t get the attention it deserves, or worse, will go unsolved. So, several weeks after filing a missing person’s report, she reaches out to TV journalist Jordan Manning for help.

Big let down from the first book
Revisado: 07-14-24
This one was just "ok." The first one was a 5-star experience with a few minor annoyances, but this one was a 3-star experience with TONS of annoyances. The biggest one is the constant whining and yelling in the dialogue. The narrator really overdid it, adding way too much animation. It was a huge distraction. I had to turn down the volume several times as the narrator YELLED. Other times I skipped ahead to get past the characters whining and crying like some bad children. Overall, this story was far less compelling than the first book. I didn't really care about these characters. The writing was definitely a let down and I can see why there may not be any more books in this series. I think the author's best work was done in book 1 and the second try was very, very weak.

Entertaining!
Revisado: 07-14-24
Despite some forays into preachiness and social commentary, I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery. The interesting and relatable protagonist was a key reason why this story works so well. Real-world issues play out in this murder mystery, a story that is well-narrated and gripping to the end. I found it hard to stop listening!

Historia
DS George Cross has always wondered why his mother left him when he was a child. Now she is back in his life, he suddenly has answers. But this unexpected reunion is not anything he's used to dealing with. When a disturbing case lands on his desk, he is almost thankful for the return to normality. The body of a monk is found savagely beaten to death in a woodland near Bristol. Nothing is known about Brother Dominic's past, which makes investigating difficult. How can Cross unpick a crime when they don't know anything about the victim? And why would someone want to harm a monk?

The worst one in this series!
Revisado: 05-20-24
I understand why this one was a free audiobook selection... it is decidedly worse than the others in this series thus far! I really enjoy books set in monasteries/convents for some reason, so I was looking forward to this latest installment in the DS Cross series. I actually wish there had been a bit more emphasis on the daily lives and routine of the monks. Although it was compelling to keep listening in order to find out who done it, there were several major flaws. First, the story drags on and is quite boring in parts. Also, some of the banter between the characters seems artificial and odd. I got the sense that the author wasn't quite sure what to do to fill the pages before resolving the plot, so went back and inserted some dialogue that I guess is supposed to contribute to character development. It didn't work! I've never experienced this flatness in any of the other books in this series. The final flaw is how unlikeable DS Cross has become! Forget his Aspergers, he's now just a rude, callous jerk. I felt no sympathy for this character and actually wondered why he had morphed into such an a$$-hole! Readers will be disappointed in this one, but at least it was a freebie!

Every day without fail, Travis Devine puts on a cheap suit, grabs his faux-leather briefcase, and boards the 6:20 commuter train to Manhattan, where he works as an entry-level analyst at the city’s most prestigious investment firm. In the mornings, he gazes out the train window at the lavish homes of the uberwealthy, dreaming about joining their ranks. In the evenings, he listens to the fiscal news on his phone, already preparing for the next grueling day in the cutthroat realm of finance. Then one morning Devine’s tedious routine is shattered by an anonymous email: She is dead.

Junk! Save your money!
Revisado: 04-24-24
This was convoluted, trite, preachy, stereotypical, sexist, and way too long. This one is a clear departure from so many other excellent stories by this author. These characters are not interesting and I found myself not really caring about their fates. The main character has promise, but his backstory makes no sense! His family hates him because he's a war hero, so he decides to change his career? That's just stupid. Despite some international intrigue, sex, and tons of dead bodies stacking up, this story failed to hold my attention. The main character is thick in the head not to connect the obvious dots sooner in this long-winded plot. Finally, I am not a fan of multiple narrators reading different characters. It sounds too much like... several people reading different characters. It doesn't flow and feels artificial. I rushed to get to the end of this one and cannot recommend it to anyone. Save your money, this is junk!

Great but so much Violence
Revisado: 04-17-24
In book 3, the focus is not on the Badass Malick. Several characters from the previous two books are here, but this story is a fresh one focusing on a new main character and the mess in which he finds himself. The reader does wonder what happened to Malick, but this is soon forgotten as this story unfolds. This book contains graphic, disturbing violence and lots of death, so beware. The violence is gratuitous and even some of the sex scenes seem a bit overdone. The narrator manages to convincingly voice a range of characters, which is impressive and entertaining. A great listen, if not an easy one.
