Historia
The “best short story writer in English” (Time) is back with a masterful collection that explores ideas of power, ethics, and justice, and cuts to the very heart of what it means to live in community with our fellow humans. With his trademark prose—wickedly funny, unsentimental, and perfectly tuned—Saunders continues to challenge and surprise: here is a collection of prismatic, deeply resonant stories that encompass joy and despair, oppression and revolution, bizarre fantasy and brutal reality.

Nothing New Here
Revisado: 12-19-22
If Audible gives us the option of listening to a book at 2X the speed, Audible should make sure performers are aware of that so they don't overdo vocal fry and quirky voices that make them sound like Donald Duck or speaking after inhaling helium.
The stories are ok. Really nothing new or original. Good to take on a run so you can look at trees and flowers while not having to pay that much attention to the narrative.

A Trilogy that should have been just one.
Revisado: 08-25-22
The first book in this trilogy is fresh, funny and intriguing and all the "mini" chapters eventually come together in an amusing way. The second and third book drag--they're repetitive and not as alluring.
After listening to some of the vignets, I'd ask myself if I should continue -- since it's a trilogy there's always hope the third book will make up for the drab second one, but alas that was not the case.
It's not that it's a difficult read, on the contrary. It just feels too repetitive and unimaginative after a while.

Historia
A Russian author, playwright, and physician, Anton Chekhov is widely considered one of the best short-story writers of all time. Having influenced such writers as Ernest Hemingway, Raymond Carver, and James Joyce, Chekhov’s stories are often noted for their stream-of-consciousness style and their vast number.

Not Chekhov's best stories
Revisado: 12-17-20
Most of the stories in this volume "read" like caricatures of the Russian people at the time. I guess they're supposed to be funny as many include a cast of very colorful characters and rely on slapstick type humor. Maybe these are the ones Tolstoy included in his second category Chekhov short stories volume.

Quentin and Lottie Bredin, like many modern couples, can't afford to divorce. Having lost their jobs in the recession, they can't afford to go on living in London; instead, they must downsize and move their three children to a house in a remote part of Devon. Arrogant and adulterous, Quentin can't understand why Lottie is so angry; devastated and humiliated, Lottie feels herself to have been intolerably wounded. Mud, mice and quarrels are one thing - but why is their rent so low?

Nature Heals
Revisado: 10-23-20
From the beginning you know what's going to happen and the story just goes round and round until what you know is going to happen, happens. Also the author makes sure that plot, characters and theme is balanced, loving and nurturing. A little boring.

Because Internet is for anyone who's ever puzzled over how to punctuate a text message or wondered where memes come from. It's the perfect book for understanding how the internet is changing the English language, why that's a good thing, and what our online interactions reveal about who we are.

Vocal Fry
Revisado: 10-29-19
The book has interesting bits and pieces. At times I felt the author was more worried about being an internet insider than giving her readers something they didn't know. McCulloch has a witty and engaging style, I'm sure she'll give us a more memorable book about linguistics in the future.
Ah, and next time, allow a professional to read the book. The vocal fry and garbled speech when reading a joke was a bit annoying.

In the long title story, we accompany Sophia Kovalevsky - a late-19th-century Russian émigré and mathematician - on a winter journey that takes her from the Riviera, where she visits her lover, to Paris, Germany, and Denmark, where she has a fateful meeting with a local doctor, and finally to Sweden, where she teaches at the only university in Europe willing to employ a female mathematician.

Revisado: 08-16-19
If you're an Alice Munro like I am, be aware that many of the stories in this collection, including the title story--Too Much Happiness--are part of Family Furnishings. I wish there'd been a list of the stories included before I bought this.

Historia
Marie Sklodowska, 25, is studying science at the Sorbonne—one of the only universities in the world that has begun to admit women. A thousand miles from her native Poland, with no money and the odds stacked against any woman daring to pursue a career in such a rigorous field, Marie throws herself into her studies. She’s certain that to succeed in a man’s world, she will have to go it alone.

Professional achievements take a backseat
Revisado: 04-04-19
At first I was very excited to get this book, and was looking forward to learning more about the life of a WOMAN scientist. But, alas, the part about science is only the background to a romantic story about Marie and Pierre Curie. There were so many extraordinary career related events in her short but prolific life that A Mind of Her Own does a disservice to this brave, heroic and extremely intelligent woman by not relating them in full. I read her wikipedia entry with more enthusiasm than this book.
