Nothing New Here

If Audible gives us the option of listening to a book at 2X the speed, Audible should make sure performers are aware of that so they don't overdo vocal fry and quirky voices that make them sound like Donald Duck or speaking after inhaling helium.
The stories are ok. Really nothing new or original. Good to take on a run so you can look at trees and flowers while not having to pay that much attention to the narrative.

A Trilogy that should have been just one.

The first book in this trilogy is fresh, funny and intriguing and all the "mini" chapters eventually come together in an amusing way. The second and third book drag--they're repetitive and not as alluring.
After listening to some of the vignets, I'd ask myself if I should continue -- since it's a trilogy there's always hope the third book will make up for the drab second one, but alas that was not the case.
It's not that it's a difficult read, on the contrary. It just feels too repetitive and unimaginative after a while.

Most of the stories in this volume "read" like caricatures of the Russian people at the time. I guess they're supposed to be funny as many include a cast of very colorful characters and rely on slapstick type humor. Maybe these are the ones Tolstoy included in his second category Chekhov short stories volume.

From the beginning you know what's going to happen and the story just goes round and round until what you know is going to happen, happens. Also the author makes sure that plot, characters and theme is balanced, loving and nurturing. A little boring.

The book has interesting bits and pieces. At times I felt the author was more worried about being an internet insider than giving her readers something they didn't know. McCulloch has a witty and engaging style, I'm sure she'll give us a more memorable book about linguistics in the future.
Ah, and next time, allow a professional to read the book. The vocal fry and garbled speech when reading a joke was a bit annoying.

If you're an Alice Munro like I am, be aware that many of the stories in this collection, including the title story--Too Much Happiness--are part of Family Furnishings. I wish there'd been a list of the stories included before I bought this.

At first I was very excited to get this book, and was looking forward to learning more about the life of a WOMAN scientist. But, alas, the part about science is only the background to a romantic story about Marie and Pierre Curie. There were so many extraordinary career related events in her short but prolific life that A Mind of Her Own does a disservice to this brave, heroic and extremely intelligent woman by not relating them in full. I read her wikipedia entry with more enthusiasm than this book.
