Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

A beautiful ode to siblinghood and the power of home
Revisado: 09-14-23
Tom Hanks does a wonderful job reading this tender, heart-filled story about a brother and sister, and the lifetime they shared. This is a slower story that leans wistful, sad and moody, but it beautifully captures the power of the buildings where we make our memories both as children and as adults. As their story unfolded, I enjoyed thinking about the home that was the backdrop to my own childhood and the memories I made their with my own sister. Places are powerful vessels for memory and I love that author Ann Patchett chose to dedicate a book to exploring the relationship people have with buildings, homes, cities, streets and rooms. There’s so much to think about and enjoy in this story.

Historia
The literary tradition of the fairy tale has long endured as the vehicle by which we interrogate the laws of reality. These fantastical stories, populated with wolves, kings, and wicked witches, have throughout history served as a template for understanding culture, society, and that muddy terrain we call our collective human psyche. In Happily, Sabrina Orah Mark reimagines the modern fairy tale, turning it inside out and searching it for the wisdom to better understand our contemporary moment in what Mark so incisively calls “this strange American weather.”

Historia
Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

Tender homage to games and friends

Loved how this book celebrates the joy and creativity of making and playing games. Also enjoyed how the story centers on a deep friendship between male/female characters.

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Absolute magic - just the book for challenging times
Revisado: 10-14-20
I’ve now read the book and listened to the book and I’m already planning to read it again. I haven’t loved a book this much in years. As I finished the final pages, I felt more grounded, whole and at peace than I have in months. Matt Haig does a brilliant job inviting us into an expansive journey through time, space and the act of living that ultimately leads us home to a deeper understanding of ourselves. I recommend this book to everyone and think it’s the book we all need right now as we navigate turbulent times.
