The author's tone is cocky and hypermasculine, and he curses much more than necessary. I am probably not his target audience.

He has great advice, but you've probably heard some version of this before. I'm glad I bought it and glad I listened, and I do recommend it despite what I disliked. It's a kick in the rear to get to work!

Tim Miller takes a great balanced approach to the fundamentals of political analysis for our time.

This book is fantastic. I cried, I laughed, I learned. Please read it! And then check out Frans de Waals' "Are we smart enough to know how smart animals are?"

Mostly for intimate relationships with narcissists

I have familial relationships with narcissists. Beyond the occasional head nod in the direction of other types of relationships, this book focuses mostly on intimate romantic partnerships. I was disappointed about this and cannot find a good book about my subject, but this book was great.

JUST A HEADS-UP BEFORE YOU BUY: this is not a particularly useful book to understand your narcissist adult child or sibling.

Best book I've read this year

This book is fantastic. Experts in so many fields of human biology and health will tell you that your problem isn't a problem, but Katy Bowman here explains why it is AND how to solve it by living a more enjoyable life. What's not to love about this premise? It is free to walk, to go outdoors, to play and move and dance! And these things will heal us.

I was raised as a very outdoorsy child. In graduate school I worked long hours in small confined chemistry lab spaces and started using computers and smartphones for most of the day. Everything in my health suffered, but the one that annoyed me the most was my vision. I needed glasses to see at a distance. Previously I had vision superior to 20/20, but I could no longer read street signs while driving or the PowerPoint projections of public lectures. I got glasses but I was angry that EVERY opthalmologist I visited insisted that inside living and screen time could not cause my poor distance vision.

Using the principles of biomechanics, Katy Bowman explains with clarity and precision what I have long experienced: that when I consistently take time to walk in the woods and look up at the trees, my vision improves.

She does this with countless subjects. A background in human anatomy and physiology will help readers understand these topics better, but even if you don't know anything about biology you should DEFINITELY read this book. I want to give a copy to everyone I know. It's amazing. Do your health and wellness a favor by reading this book. 💯

Light on the natural history of plants

I expected a thorough description of the flora and fauna of the Galapagos Islands. This book is a good environmental history, describing human research on and interaction with the archipelago, but it falls short of presenting the complete natural history of the major groups of organisms who live there.

Very little on plants, nothing on fungi or microorganisms. the emphasis is on terrestrial vertebrate animals. It's good but it might better be called "Humans and their interactions with the vertebrate animals of the Galapagos". The chapter on the geology is solid, and plants ARE mentioned, but it's just an incredibly incomplete natural history and my expectations have made it harder to appreciate the text.

I do recommend this book! Just be forewarned that it emphasizes birds and reptiles and mammals.

Do you already understand the modem paradigms of biology and some of the recent historical developments? This book is for you. It's too outdated (he describes the insertion of a floppy disk into a computer as if it were some sci-fi marvel that no one but the most technologically advanced scientists get to witness) to be a good introductory resource for biology learners. But the journalistic detail on Rosemary and Peter Grant's work on the Galapagos finches is outstanding, and it's interesting to see someone who is deep in the neo-Darwinist camp explore the possibility of speciation through hybridization (in the vein of Symbiogenesis) because the modern divisions among evolutionary biologists had not yet become entrenched.

My chief complaint is the organization. It is organized thematically, not chronologically, but the themes are blurry as if the author himself was unsure where one topic ends and the next begins, and also unsure of how the topics connect to one another. Maybe I missed something, but I feel like I'm reading three or four different books with different theses. Again, for this reason, I DO NOT recommend this as a first read for lay people curious about evolution.

If you're new to learning about evolution, start with Jerry Coyne's WHY EVOLUTION IS TRUE and then read some Lynn Margulis, James Shapiro, and Phillip Ball's HOW LIFE WORKS. This background will allow you to deeply appreciate Jonathan Weiner's THE BEAK OF THE FINCH in rich detail. Five stars.

I'm so inspired to go learn the taxa and natural history of the Galapagos and come back to listen to this book again. FIVE STARS!

This was a cozy little novel. it's predictable but sweet and I enjoyed it. I have heard the male voice actor narrate a male character on another romance novel and I don't like his intensity, but otherwise the interpretation was fine. It doesn't get sexual, and I appreciate that. It's wholesome.

La codependencia es tóxica: evita este libro.

Revisado: 11-17-24
