Historia
Twelve-year-old Bird lives a quiet existence with his loving but broken father, a former linguist. He knows not to ask many questions, stand out too much, stray too far. For a decade, their lives have been governed by laws written to preserve 'American culture' in the wake of years of economic instability and violence. To keep the peace and restore prosperity, the authorities are now allowed to relocate children of dissidents, especially those of Asian origin, and libraries have been forced to remove books seen as unpatriotic—including the work of Bird's mother.

Another brilliant and memorable book.
Revisado: 08-08-23
Celeste Ng has, again, written a story that stands out among all the others. I found the theme deeply moving and fascinating. This novel will stay with me, as all her others have.

Historia
There is no sun. There is no moon. There is only gray - the smog belched from coal-fueled factories. The Workers silently shuffle to their assigned posts. The Outcasts watch from the alley walls. On every corner, a Watcher stands stone-faced, a rifle in hand. This is the only life that exists. Beyond the mountains is a dream. But dreams are foolish in a place like this. Hannah has spent 19 years dodging Watchers and doing as she is told. When she wakes to the valley exploding in revolution, Hannah is forced onto a dangerous path, where nothing is what she believed.

Low hanging fruit.
Revisado: 10-22-21
The author has written some good work but I find the topic of serial killers and their female victims quite tiresome and usually reserved for authors who are struggling to come up with something to say. I was expecting more from this author, in terms of topic. The male serial killer and his sexual attacks on women just seems so overdone. Will we get to a point when the rape and murder of young women isn't considered entertainment.? Perhaps it is just too tempting to reach for the low hanging fruit.

If you like the sound of saliva...
Revisado: 01-01-21
With every word you can hear the saliva in the narrators mouth. Gross!!! Will have to get a refund...... just looked back at the details and it appears to be the author who narrates. Rarely works well.

Repetitive
Revisado: 11-23-19
I enjoyed the first book but this one just treads water as Lachlan repeatedly attempts to find/save Josephine. Again and again and again! I want to read the third in the series because I want to know what happens but I can’t put myself through the rinse and repeat failure of it all.
Would probably suit people in their early 20’s who still believe in “forever love” and other magical thinking.

I've seen it all.... A boy who planned to be the next school shooter. A patient with OCD whose loved ones really did suffer every time he missed a ritual. A choir boy who claimed he was being molested - not by a priest - but by God Himself. A patient with PTSD who gave me nightmares. A husband and wife who accused each other of abuse, and only one of them was telling the truth.

As long as you don’t mind outlandish stories that are not based in reality it is enjoyable but not for me. Good narration though.

Dan Savage, have you read this?
Revisado: 12-08-18
As a 45 year old, straight, Australian mother of 2 I have to say this was my favourite audiobook in many years.
Gods!!! The narrator was so good. I think even Dan Savage would agree.
I have LOVED all of T.J. Klune’s audiobooks but I have to admit I thought this one might be a stretch with dragons and unicorn.... however this will be a story that Will stay with me. I might even recommend to my children when they are grown.
Or is that just weird?
That’s weird isn’t it?
I’m sure Gary would say it’s ok.

So excited about finding this brilliant author.
Revisado: 02-05-14
I find it hard to find books that really engage me. So much of the time I feel like I am churning through average, forgettable stories. But here I stumble across this author who writes books that engage me and keep me wanting more. I have read or listened to most of her books and am yet to be disappointed. Each story is different. There's no formula that she repeats which makes each story unique. Her characters are so real. It is not deep, introspective, navel pondering literature. It is real life depicting characters you almost feel like you know.
The audible versions are also so well narrated.
