Historia
Everything Poppy has ever believed in is a lie, including the man she was falling in love with. Thrust among those who see her as a symbol of a monstrous kingdom, she barely knows who she is without the veil of the Maiden. But what she does know is that nothing is as dangerous to her as him. The Dark One. The Prince of Atlantia. He wants her to fight him, and that’s one order she’s more than happy to obey. He may have taken her, but he will never have her.

Historia
When an experiment to study quantum uncertainty goes spectacularly wrong, physics student Bill Rustad and his friends find that they have accidentally created an inter-dimensional portal. They connect to Outland - an alternate Earth with identical geology, but where humans never evolved. The group races to establish control of the portal before the government, the military, or evildoers can take it away. Then everything changes when the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts in an explosion large enough to destroy civilization and kill half the planet.

Probably worth the read
Revisado: 09-28-22
Is it as good as the Bobiverse books? No, of course not, but what would be?
Overall, this is a solid read. The beginning is pretty slow, and there's a lot of characters and perspectives to keep up with, but if you stick with it, you'll be rewarded with the same kind of energy and writing style as the Bob books.
As for the narration? If you liked him in Bob, you'll probably like him here, because it's exactly the same.

Lucy Hutton has always been certain that the nice girl can get the corner office. She's charming and accommodating and prides herself on being loved by everyone at Bexley & Gamin. Everyone except for coldly efficient, impeccably attired, physically intimidating Joshua Templeman. And the feeling is mutual. Trapped in a shared office together 40 (ok, 50 or 60) hours a week, they've become entrenched in an addictive, ridiculous never-ending game of one-upmanship.

Pure romance, no B-plot in this book
Revisado: 12-18-20
Who says you need a B-plot in a love story? If I'm reading a romance, I'm reading it for the romance, not the plot, and this book delivers. But if you're looking for a story that has a plot about anything other than the relationship between the main characters, you won't find that here. I think there's maybe three scenes total that are not about the two of them.
If you're looking for a feel good love story, though, this is it. It hits all the best tropes you want in an "enemies to lovers" romance, and the steamy scenes are VERY steamy without being explicit or smutty (that is, you know exactly what intimate acts are happening during the scenes, without reading like a poorly written porno).

Solid story, but suspension of disbelief required
Revisado: 02-27-20
The story
First thing: be prepared to suspend some disbelief. You can't go into this expecting a scientific (or even pseudo-scientific) explanation for a lot of what happens in this story, including how hypercanes are even a thing, how people live underground, the technology that has been developed, etc. All that said, if you're willing and able to suspend your disbelief, it's a very enjoyable story. I liked the main character and I like her narrative voice. The ending is definitely set up for a sequel (although it doesn't necessarily NEED one, I guess...), but I've checked back every year since I first bought this book and it doesn't seem like one is coming :( But if she ever does write a sequel, I will definitely be buying it.
The narration
Her voice is perfect for the main character and her narration. Her voices for pretty much every male character are awful. I was re-listening to this one recently, and the first time the main character's father spoke, I about spit out my drink, because I did NOT remember his voice sounding so stupid. Fortunately, her narration voice is generally so good that I can forgive the terrible male voices (and the pretty obnoxious accents she gives everyone). That being said, if you're someone who is particularly sensitive to stupid voices, you may need to skip this one...

It’s hell on her social life. Abe is the doctor and Sam's partner in crime. He isn’t much of a criminal. Except for the kidney stealing. But he’s using that money to fund his research that he anticipates will be able to cure diabetes. So, all for a good cause...? You decide. Of course, it's hell on his social life.

Funny, not dark
Revisado: 02-24-20
This was a good listen, but the description as a "dark" comedy is pretty inaccurate--as another reviewer said, the only thing "dark" about this story is the topic of kidney thievery.
Overall, it was a fun and funny story, read by a phenomenal cast. You can't try too hard to poke holes in it, though, because it would absolutely fall apart the second you start. If you're okay with suspending your disbelief for a while, though, you'll have fun.

Surprisingly good!
Revisado: 02-18-20
I generally have very low expectations for books I get as the free monthly originals, but this one was actually quite good. it's definitely more of a short story than a full book, but it did everything I want from a SciFi short story, it introduced a cool world and kept me engaged with cool tech concepts. Overall, I'm very pleased.

Better than I expected
Revisado: 02-16-20
I got this because it was on sale for less than $5. I honestly wasn't expecting much from it, so I was ultimately pleasantly surprised. That's not saying too much, though, because my expectations were honestly so very low. I'm not going to go as far as to say it was GOOD, but it was alright. It kept me interested, although the other reviews that talk about how nothing much happens aren't entirely wrong--this book could have been condensed to the first five chapters of a better book, or been expanded and elaborated into a better book. And yes, the main character is dumb. Often irritatingly so. I don't think the comparison to Bella Swan that I saw in another review is quite fair, but I can see where that reviewer was coming from. If you're willing to suspend disbelief for a while and just go with the flow, it's an alright purchase.
Will I get the next book? Probably eventually, if it's ever on sale. But I'm in no rush. The fact that this is a 6 or 7 book series honestly doesn't excite me. If it were just a trilogy, I might be more interested in finishing the series, but knowing that that I'll need to buy 5 or 6 more books to get to the end just doesn't excite me.
Overall, would I recommend this book? If it's on sale and you're interested, yeah, I guess so. But if you're looking for a thrilling, fast-paced dystopian story-line, you probably want to pass.

Worth the credit
Revisado: 02-11-20
This was overall a pretty good book. Good enough that I'm very disappointed to find that there's no sequel, and good enough that I'll be looking into other books by Holly Black now that I'm finished with this.
While it deals with vampires and gore, I don't know that I'd classify it as horror... it's more urban fantasy with some scary subject matter. Some of the plot points were kind of predictable, and there were times when I just wanted to take the characters and shake them for being stupid, but not so much so that I couldn't enjoy the story.
The fact that whoever put this together decided to add music underneath a few of the scenes, though, drove me crazy. It was fine, though unnecessary, in my opinion, when it was just a little bit of suspenseful music under the dramatic moments, but then the additional of intense, action-packed music for the climactic moments was just obnoxious, in my opinion. It took me out of the story.
Overall, though, if you're intrigued by the title and summary, go for it.

Nita doesn't murder supernatural beings and sell their body parts on the internet - her mother does that. Nita just dissects the bodies after they've been "acquired". Until her mom brings home a live specimen and Nita decides she wants out; dissecting a scared teenage boy is a step too far. But when she decides to save her mother's victim, she ends up sold in his place - because Nita herself isn't exactly "human". Solidly good
Revisado: 02-07-20
Overall, a good book. Not phenomenal, but it kept me engaged. I bought the sequel before I had even finished this one. At times the narration felt stiff, but I really appreciated how the narrator knew enough Spanish to pronounce the names and places properly. Definitely gory, but not gratuitously so.
My biggest complaint is that if you're going to make a long acronym, and it's one that's pronounceable, then just read the acronym like a word, don't read the letters every single time. If I have to hear her read "I. N. H. U. P." letter by letter or more time, I'm going to scream.
