l'histoire est super géniale.
la narration est épouvantable.
c'est dommage.

the story is super great.
the narration is abysmal.
it's a shame.

i love all murderbot, so this is not about that.

rather, this is just informational advice for the reading order of the series:

even though it was written afterwards, "fugitive telemetry" takes place chronologically between "exit strategy"/"home" and "network effect", and documents murderbot's (quasi) integration into feeling (kinda sorta sometimes) ok in preservation society, which is already fairly well established by the beginning of "network effect".

i have listened to the entire series a couple of times now, and each time i keep forgetting to listen to "fugitive telemetry" before "network effect", and it always feels discontinuous and incorrect.

the actual chronological order has a nice, natural flow to it, so do yourself a favor, and listen to them in that order.

just a heads up.

while largely a matter of personal taste, i suppose:

i much prefer my audiobooks read as a traditional "reading aloud" type narration, without any extra music, sound effects, or dramatization. it is also important that this narrative voice is consistent throughout the series (aka they use the same narrator(s) for all the books in a series).

with this in mind, i find kevin free's narration to be perfectly suited for the series: his dry, slightly sardonic, observational narration is tone perfect for the underlying dry wit of the series.

in my opinion, a more angsty, emo-ridden, drama queen murderbot reading would have been a huge and awkward mistake.

kudos to mr. free, for his great narration, and becoming forever the true voice of murderbot in my head.

I like to listen to books in other languages for language practice.

This works best if it is a book that I have already listened to/read in English,
as then the material is more familiar.

For new languages, I will often try to listen to a book in parallel:
say, 15 minutes of English, then 15 minutes of the other languages, etc.
As of yet, there is a fairly limited selection of foreign language audiobooks available in the U.S. store, and an even smaller selection that are available in both English and a variety of other languages.

(And, for some reason, the Spanish ones seem often to be abridged, which makes them much less useful for this type of "rosetta stone" parallel listening practice.)

But it is slowly getting better.

Congratulations to Audible for slowly increasing its foreign language material,
and here is hoping that it will continue to do so.

And perhaps some books in Mandarin and Arabic also?
