The plot holes. I have worked in the academic world and business. the idea that any institution would not have an operational budget approved by the CEO, written educational plan, and a bullet proof business plan for a 'billion credit exspense' is unbelievable. I am a fan of this series. love it in fact. I just can't get into this offering. Lowell writes about the academy like it's a NGO running on a shoestring.

I got hooked by the sample and hoped the audiobook was just as good. It was... okay(?). The audiobook is essentially a novelization of a tower defence mobile game. Yeah, you heard me. The kind you play when waiting for the dentist in the lobby.

The book doesn't have huge plot holes, but there is nothing great about it either.

The main character is a bit of a Gary Sue who always comes out on the top in the end.

it was diverting but not original. I hated the voice acting so much. I hoped the voice actors didn't have indigestion because they were gnawing on the scenery the entire production.

Its a story about a lot of things not Shay and Tock and then they hook up near the end of the novel, not much of a roamance

There is very little of the story that is directly related to the build up betwen Tock and Shay. Some early story introverted tsundere action. A lot of time with the two in the hospital. Much of the rest of the story has little to do with them directly. Instead we get a lot of world blding background detwils, too much about puppies, and a book that bridges the fourth book with the rest of the series.

Then towards the end of the book Shy and Tock hook up ater a humorous, 'do you have condom,' conversation.

The book is weak sauce.
-Little sexual tension and build up between the two main characters,
-A lot o the book is about other things than Tock and Shay.
-The sexual build up seems like an after thought late in the book. And there is little retionship building between Tock and Shay.

Over all its Meh...

OP MC has few challanges that really push him, Gets rich instantly, and has BDSM sexy times with... well, almost everyone, and gets a sociopathic personality along with his instant magic abilities.

And, I have to admit, its boring. I kept turning it off to do other things. If you like self incert power fantasies in which the MC uses women as objects, conquers territory like Ghengas Khan without having to actually earn it, well, you might be an incel, but you also might want to try to expand your literary repetoir.

Listen to something else better written.

Typical for Rowe. The first thid of the book was bogged down in exposition and Corran's paranoid anxiety. Much of the rest of the book was an anti harassment workshop from HR. You could almost skip through most of the middle and not miss much, plot-wise.

I just wonder if we have to wait years for the next installment. Again...

After three books the story has finally started to develope character and rely (marginally) less on pop culture references and trope-centric characters.

It's still junk food for the brain. Give it a miss until you have nothing better to do on a Sunday afternoon.

For those specifically looking for this type of content:

1) The sex scenes are okay. Not great but fun to listen to. They are not critical to the plot nor does the MC have to win the trust and friendship of his love interests.

2) The action scenes are okay. Neither too many or too few. But, they do lack tension that builds over the course of the scene, and aren't pivotal to the overall story, like the sex scenes.

3) Trope-riddled characters. I mean really trope-riden!

4) Clique "hero goes to the academy" plot.

5) The story is more "high school ricalry" than high fantasy.

It is what it is. This is a 'Sunday with nothing else to do listen'. But, if you do have something else to do, go do that instead.
