As a longtime Ghibli fan and first time reader

WOW what a different story! I loved all the nicknames Sophie collected and her irritation with Howl and I'm going to avoid spoiling the differences, but it's a completely different tale. I don't know which I like more. I might have really disliked the Ghibli movie if I'd read the book first, but I also salute the studio for absolutely pinning the vibes.

I refuse to believe this

The author really wants me to think a man who served a tour in Afghanistan, as a medic, came out the other side not knowing what someone means when they say they found their Father? Nearly four chapters of an otherwise fairly great detective story were dedicated to proselytizing. Like, I'm sorry, you've got an LA based clearly Hispanic gang leader who would also very likely be raised Catholic, but his religion isn't even mentioned while you've got 3 other "good" guys jamming their Faith down the male protagonist's throat every time he gets in range and -and- he's acting like an atheist from a Jack Chick tract who has never heard of an afterlife or heaven or all the other "perks" of believing, like people who don't believe somehow grew up in predominantly Christian demographics with goggles that blocked all religious imagery from their view until some rando came up to them and prayed at them to "save" them.

Ugh. Spare me.

Great for doing the math in your head

The pace is perfect for helping up with the narration while doing the math in your head.
Can knock you out if you focus on falling asleep.
Can be riveting if you focus on the information.
I learned a lot, but also love using Shalhoub's narration as part of my sleep routine.

I was riveted, couldn't pause. I loved Earstripe, what a great person. And ooh, that slow burn angst. Can't get enough of it.

The end wrapped things up a little rushed for me, but I loved the main characters and I was all in when the loving finally got on!

Insight into a writer's process, a creative's stresses, and how to let go and let flow. I knew I admired Day as an actress, but even more, I'm inspired by her as her self. I'm going to go not be weird on the internet. I grew up on it, and I've been reminded what a joy it is by this book.

Michael's holding steady in great detective series

The narrator is getting a little sketchy with his female voices in this book. Paula is a no nonsense cop who lives on caffeine and cat naps. she shouldn't purr quite so much when she talks. I looked the accent for the ex wife, real good touch as her, her daughter, and the girlfriend otherwise sound too close for clarity.
Whatever he was doing for the hyphenated detective was odd, but interesting, and officer Garland was pretty boss.
I have a major nitpick about Officer Garland though, this time with the writers. She was the -only- character described as African American, which took me way out of the story for a moment because I realized that with her described like that, I was meant to assume that -every- -single- -other- character was white. What the heck, y'all?
Assume any race, readers. None of these characters rely on their race anyway.

Fun, exciting, sometimes spooky, great characters, excellent acting, and the sound design- just perfection. Never too much, never overwhelming the story. Good science fiction schlock. Exactly as an Alien story should be.
