Historia
Captain Ivan Vorpatril is happy with his relatively uneventful bachelor's life as a staff officer to a Barrayaran admiral. Cousin to imperial troubleshooter Miles Vorkosigan, Ivan is not far down the hereditary list for the emperorship. Thankfully, new heirs have directed that headache elsewhere, leaving Ivan to enjoy his life on Komarr, far from the Byzantine court politics of his home system. But when an old friend in Barrayaran intelligence asks Ivan to protect an attractive young woman who may be on the hit list of a criminal syndicate, his chivalrous nature takes over. It seems danger and adventure have once more found Captain Vorpatril.

Beautiful story - beautiful characters
Revisado: 03-31-23
I just love this story. Ista is a great heroine - getting to follow a woman who has lost her sense of purpose and sense of self, distrusting her value and worth and abilities, and getting to watch her discover ( for the first time) passion, meaning, and self- assurance - is very empowering. Watching her true self grate against the perceptions others have of her is an exciting and freeing celebration of personal renaissance . A beautiful thing to experience - and inspiring. Great VO artist!!

Fantastic story - beautifully written.
Revisado: 03-26-23
This book is now one of my all time favorites. It took me until hour 3 to be fully onboard, but the layers and characters and blended descriptions of human experiences and God-touched experiences ( as well as the ongoing questions of free will in a world where the Gods find action through people) are superbly beautiful. As with all of her books, I found myself welling up at the beauty and fullness of the words coming into my heart from such a fantastic writer. Imperfect people, imperfect heroes, and heroes all the same. Lois Mcmaster Bujold is just an absolute gift unto our world, and her writings bring me joy after joy each time I listen to, or read them. Very grateful for this story, as well as all of her others works. I will say, I missed Grover Gardner as the reader, but understood that a different tone might be useful for this book. VO performance? —-After hour 3 I would say it improves and the pacing is a bit better - the accidental wrong voices for characters throughout were a bit of a shame, but forgivable/ easy to forget as the writing was so good. However, the pacing at the beginning was a struggle. I think it was the breathing in the middle of sentences and thoughts that threw off me off the most, and as much as I’d grown to accept the reader’s choices for characters, those strange breaks in the middle of phrases or ideas, or fumbling over lines, could have been improved. Basically, I spent the first part of the book moaning about the reader, and then accepted my fate and possibly experienced stockholm syndrome to stick with the story that I so loved. In sum: I’d say while I loved certain character voice choices, I’d hope for smoother reading in future books. Stuck between a 2 or 3 star for performance because there were times when it really flowed.

Brilliant story - wonderful reader
Revisado: 03-19-23
I am a huge fan of the penric and des stories, and of Lois Mcmaster Bujold’s writings in general. The voice over artist, Grover Gardner, is SO good - I never have to stop and try and understand what sense is in the writing - it flows so well. Grover is my favorite Audio book narrator, and anytime I listen to Lois’s books without him I feel that little bit is missing, and a little bit sadder for it. 10 stars for this beautiful book - coming out as an audiobook during 2020 as well. A beautiful nod to our medical heroes.

Lois Mcmaster Bujold is a phenomenal crafter of beautiful relationships - of characters who think not solely of themselves, but of those with whom they share their lives. I highly recommend this book as well as all of the Vorkosigan saga.

Lakewalker Barr Foxbrush returns from two years of patrolling the bitter wilds of Luthlia against the enigmatic, destructive entities called malices, only to find that the secret daughter he'd left behind in the hinterland of Oleana has disappeared from her home after a terrible accusation. The search for her will call on more of Barr's mind and heart than just his mage powers, as he tries to balance his mistakes of the past and his most personal duties to the future. Historia
Filled with magic, heroism, and all-too-human characters, Bujold's Sharing Knife saga is both a gripping adventure and a poignant romance. The farmers and riverfolk have long distrusted the power of the mysterious and aloof Lakewalkers. The proud Lakewalkers, meanwhile, have exiled Dag after learning of his marriage to Fawn, the first outsider to be bound to a Lakewalker in their magical way. But as Dag's natural Lakewalker ability to manipulate "ground energy" begins to develop in dangerous directions, he and Fawn realize that big changes are ahead.
