great reading. brought all characters to life. I've always thought Joseph Conrad was a boring read (thanks college). after listening to this presentation, I'll go back to my books to give him another try.

Was waiting for a complete anthology of Lovecraft's work. Has all the short stories I've come to enjoy throughout the years. The big plus with this collection, all the chapter listings/titles are actually listed under the 'Chapters' tab. No more blind searching for stories. The narration is great, duties split between a few narrators. Although I have a writing degree, I have never been fond of reading Lovecraft's prose. Hearing it performed, I must confess, is a better alternative. These men hit all the right tones and pauses that bring these tales to life. Some stories fall flat, even though they are beautifully written. I am not disappointed with this purchase. Turn down the lights, light a candle and allow yourself to be taken away to some mysteriously cruel world...

Stumbled upon Robert Howard through a short story from another collection. Thought it was pretty decent. Was happy to find this title in Audible. Read through the reviews and was shocked that some people were taken back by the 'racist' overtones in some of the stories. As a writer and reader, I know we cannot have thin skins. The world is not a fine a friendly place most of the time. Racist? Don't know. I believe using a racist term in a story does not necessarily make an author an evil person, who lives in fantasy and writes about other people and places (psst, that's what an author does). Context, people. Context. These were written in the 1920s and 1930s. Moving on. These tales are very like H.P. Lovecraft--poetic, good detail, full of monsters and creepy things, but some are not as great as Lovecraft's writing. It's still good and worth it, but some stories don't have that polish to them. I won't point them out, because these are my opinions and I am not going to taint another reader's / listener's experience. Overall, very impressive and exhaustive collection of tales. The narration is great and I am glad I purchased this.

I've always shied away from Ray Bradbury growing up. Even in college, back in the early 90s, I would walk the other way if I sensed a Bradbury story was coming my way. This is due to the fact that I, more so back then, detest science fiction tales. I thought Mr. Bradbury would be boring in a 1950 flying saucer way. Years after graduation college, when I could digest more literature, I stumbled across a copy of The October Country. Wow. I couldn't believe what I was reading. It necessarily wasn't the content of each tale that enthralled me, but it was how it was written. There exists pure poetry in Bradbury's prose. I gobbled up The October Country and ever since then, have read most of his works. I must say, however, that his short story writing is a million times better than his novels. Great collection. Bradbury really shines in all these tales.

As an English Major I've read Moby Dick twice in my lifetime (one by choice, the other for class). Saw the original movie. Decided to download the book. I read the reviews of this recording, and although I agree with some of Carse's criticisms about some of the character's interpretations, I am completely impressed with his voice and narration. I've listened to some other samples of other narrations of this great novel, but his voice is exactly what this book needs--old fashioned, salty and sophisticated. Some other criticisms I've seen are about the novel itself...how it's ungodly long and light on action. Word to future readers or listeners--this is an epic American novel. This tells you everything you thought you ever wanted to know about whaling, whaling life, ships, sailors and all sorts of mythology mixed in. This book is a journey. Once you've started, you must hold on for the long haul. This isn't a day kayaking getaway. Remember, this book was written when people patience to read (and to listen) and weren't addicted to social media. This is an enjoyably long, poetic trip with great characters and very impressive writing (should you be brave enough to read it). Ahoy.
