Conservatism at its finest

For those like me, desperately hoping for a return to a sane, small-government, principled GOP - the party of Reagan and Ford, the party championed by my late mom and dad - this is a desperately important book. Partisanship, to Liz Cheney, takes a back seat to truth and America’s constitutional republic. In compelling detail and with passion, she explains convincingly what happened leading up to, during and after the Jan. 6 events in Washington - while never once abandoning her long-held conservative beliefs. This is must-reading for Americans who care.

Can’t understand the criticism that Lewis gets too close to his subjects. Of course he does - it makes the story more credible, not less so. And those who suggest he was easy on Sam didn’t pay attention. Plus, the narration is terrific.

One of the best

I’ve read and listened to multiple accounts of the last months of the Trump administration, and this may be the best overall. Yes, it goes over some well-worn ground in places, but always adds details that give life and fresh credibility to the narrative.
Karl’s previous book was as evenhanded as any political book can be; this one is equally so, but it exposes so much incompetence and dishonesty by Trump and his enablers that it will sadly and disingenuously be dismissed by a significant swath of people who know better, or ought to.

A mission to save the human race becomes much more than that, with multiple twists and terrifically drawn characters. I didn’t care for the NCIS-Los Angeles-style snarkiness of the protagonist, but the story and the pacing more than made up for it. Looking forward to the movie.

The only problem is that the former president - thoughtful, insightful, and accessible - ends the story in the middle. Part two is on the way and can’t land soon enough. The bin Laden episode, which wraps up this part, is particularly gripping.
Grappling with critics on the right and the left, trying to be a good husband and dad, weighing morality and politics - it’s all here. Trying to decide between reading and listening? Audio, hands down.
