Historia
The group discovers a purebred Maltese whimpering in the snow-covered grove - right beside a dead body. Pete, a squatter who camped out on the land, apparently met his end after a fallen fir-tree branch fell on his head. But as Melanie and Aunt Peg investigate Pete's complicated history, it's clear his death was no accident. Now, Melanie must run through a flurry of likely suspects and muzzle a dogged murderer in time - or she'll be next on someone's deadly list.

Couldn't get past inferior narration
Revisado: 12-10-20
The narrator was just terrible. Especially after listening to Jessica Almasy, the great narrator of all the previous recordings. The narrator had an annoying cadence to everything she said with very little voice delineation between characters. I'm sure I might find the story just as entertaining as the rest of this series, but since I didn't get past the first quarter I'll never know. Sorry to see this series stall here.

Didn't come off very authentic
Revisado: 10-21-17
There was just something a bit cliche about the combination of characters and the plot. Not nearly as enthralling as Robert Graves' I, Claudius. The murder mystery with a silly romantic ending was what really made it not my cup of tea.

Painfully slow
Revisado: 10-21-17
Way to much mundane detail that was probably meant to reveal artic life or the sense of depression but did nothing to advance the plot whatsoever. It was exacerbated by the pace of the reader throughout that was good for dialog from a reciticent culture, but surely the character thought processes and the 3rd person description of the environment do not need to be that painfully slow. I nearly gave up 80% through and when the gist of the crimes were finally revealed it was not worth the wait. Would have returned it if I could.

Historia
In his wickedly brilliant first novel, Debut Dagger Award winner Alan Bradley introduces one of the most singular and engaging heroines in recent fiction: Eleven-year-old Flavia de Luce, an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison. It is the summer of 1950 - and a series of inexplicable events has struck Buckshaw, the decaying English mansion that Flavia’s family calls home. A dead bird is found on the doorstep, a postage stamp bizarrely pinned to its beak. Hours later, Flavia finds a man lying in the cucumber patch and watches him as he takes his dying breath.

Too clever by half!
Revisado: 08-10-17
What would have made The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie better?
Cutting out at least half of the gratuitous rambling, over-the-top details (2/3 of the writing) put in to show how "terribly" clever this little girl is. It overwhelms the plot and when narrated at rapid fire speed, was far less entertaining than annoying. We all know people who saturate every conversation with so much irrelevant details of their personal life that it makes them very tedious to be around. I found myself tuning out all the extraneous chatter then having to rewind to see if I'd missed any furthering of the plot! I gave up between 2 and 3 hours and am returning it.
Has The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie turned you off from other books in this genre?
For a while. Will be much more critical when listening to sample as the whole book may go on and on just like that.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
Slowed it down. I have loved her work on other books but her voice combined with the tedious prose was too much. I tried slowing the playback speed but on my old iPod it then sounded like a little smart ass girl in a barrel!
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
There might be an interesting story in there but I couldn't get past the annoying parts to find out.
Any additional comments?
Might try reading it some day.

Really weak series!
Revisado: 10-24-16
What disappointed you about Love Only Once?
It was such a thin and predictable plot I hoped the series would improve but the 2nd book was even worse and annoying!
What could Johanna Lindsey have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
How about some original plotting.
What didn’t you like about Laural Merlington’s performance?
Material was so bad can't really judge the performance.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
No was just plain silly.

Middle school dramatics and a pedestrian plot
Revisado: 10-24-16
What disappointed you about Tender Rebel?
Ridiculous plot elements as artificial as bad reality TV. She's mad because he won't agree to take a mistress when they marry and other childish dramatics. I need a little more plot in my guilty romances. This was just annoying.
Has Tender Rebel turned you off from other books in this genre?
Only from this author. Made the mistake of buying more than one in the series. After listening to the 1st two I am returning them all. Lisa Kleypas's Hathaway series is far superior with richer plots.
What didn’t you like about Laural Merlington’s performance?
The laughing but the dialog was so patronizing and cliche it is hard to blame her.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Annoyance!

Incongruous graphic sex!
Revisado: 06-15-16
Any additional comments?
After listening to most of it, I checked all reviews and sales categories for this book on Audible and Amazon and found not one mention of graphic sex. I'm guessing this may be typical of the author's previous work of which I am ignorant and I'm the only one who didn't know. For myself I enjoyed the sweet romantic comedy and the were-dog concept, but I really could not reconcile that type of book with lubricating-source details of anal intercourse and anilingus - I know the guy is supposed to be a dog, but really! Imagine the movie "When Harry Met Sally" including crotch-shot porno scenes and you'll see what I'm getting at. Fair warning is warranted so hopefully this review will be one for other people like me.

Alex Verus is part of a world hidden in plain sight, running a magic shop in London. But when Alex is approached by multiple factions to crack open a relic from a long-ago mage war, he knows that whatever's inside must be beyond powerful.

Imitation falls short of inspirations
Revisado: 05-15-16
What did you like best about Fated? What did you like least?
I liked the British setting but that's it. It was a narrow spin on Dresden Files with Harry Potter accent thrown in but without the humor or imagery of either. The magic was just done and all the politics of "wizard' councils was a poor imitation of these original series.
What was most disappointing about Benedict Jacka’s story?
Since plot elements were so familiar, the author apparently tried to distinguish it by calling the wizards "MAGES". A very annoying word to my ears and I got really sick of "mage, mage, mage, mage" non-stop in this audio. Looked up mage in an online dictionary which stated it as "archaic but revised in recent time by fantasy games". That sounds about right.
What about Gildart Jackson’s performance did you like?
Perfectly fine performance, not his fault the story was lacking in my opinion.
Do you think Fated needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
First in a series I bought as a Daily Deal and like many of them a bad bet but better than paying a whole credit.
Any additional comments?
One caveat of my review is I'm not a dyed in the wool fantasy fan and only enjoy unique concepts. So for those who love anything in this genre, they may well enjoy it.

J K Rowling Really Delivers
Revisado: 07-16-14
Where does The Cuckoo's Calling rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Top 5% by far. I'm glad that her pen name was uncovered or I would not necessarily have found this book. Unlike fantasy/YA enthusiasts that are disappointed that this is not another Harry Potter, I loved the HP books because of the fabulous plot and character development. It reminded me of classic talent like Victor Hugo. I'm delighted she applied her significant talent to one of my favorite genres.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Cuckoo's Calling?
There are so many great visuals in this book, so hard to pick one. The vivid character development of the main protagonists is fantastic and the build up to plot climax extremely well done.
Have you listened to any of Robert Glenister’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but he was so spot on I wish I could demand he redo Ian Rankin's books (another favorite author).
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Can't wait to share it with others and looking forward to many more installments in the series.

Historia
When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike. At first, Mrs. Quine just thinks her husband has gone off by himself for a few days - as he has done before - and she wants Strike to find him and bring him home. But as Strike investigates, he discovers that Quine's disappearance is no coincidence. The novelist has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen-portraits of almost everyone he knows. If the novel were published, it would ruin lives - meaning that almost everyone in his life would have motives to silence him.

One of the best writers our our generation
Revisado: 07-16-14
What made the experience of listening to The Silkworm the most enjoyable?
Highly intelligent writing flawlessly narrated.
What did you like best about this story?
J.K. Rowling is so talented. What a total pleasure to have this talent applied to one of my favorite genres.
Which character – as performed by Robert Glenister – was your favorite?
Comoran Strike, of course but Robert Glenister did ALL the characters so distinctly well, I'd love to have him redo some of my other favorite crime novels.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
My main reaction was pure relish and enjoyment. Great writing and narration and plot - I'd love to see two dozen more just like it.
Any additional comments?
